Stale link to CoE page about copyright edit

Hello; I can't edit the page to fix this, but the link with the text "Official copyright and legal statement" leads to a 404. The current version seems to be http://www.coe.int/en/web/about-us/the-european-flag#portlet_56_INSTANCE_mWvvth7oEDZL . Should probably use a Internet Archive link to prevent this in the future. Here's one for the current version: https://web.archive.org/web/20160128013725/http://www.coe.int/en/web/about-us/the-european-flag#portlet_56_INSTANCE_mWvvth7oEDZL — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morganwahl (talk • contribs) 15:18, 08 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Copyright edit

"The Council of Europe owns the intellectual property of the European flag." Specifically what "intellectual property"? Copyright, design, what? And can we have references for the relevant registry/ies please? You have to realise that "intellectual property" doesn't have any precise legal definition. Hairy Dude 01:40, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, it's copyright, apparently. Fixed. Hairy Dude 01:46, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
If it's copyright, then shouldn't it be deleted? --GW_SimulationsUser Page | Talk 15:27, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
There's no real source for those statements as such, and I don't think it applies any more than other flags in that sense.- J Logan t: 16:51, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Many countries, including all the EU member states, have copyright laws that give copyright to the creator of any creative work, whether they want it or not. The Council of Europe has the copyright for this flag, but they explicitly give permission to anyone to do just about anything to it. (see links to their page about copyright of the flag above). Their main restriction is that you can't use it to trick people into thinking _you're_ the Council of Europe, or are somehow officially associated with them if you're not. They also mention something about not being used "in connection with any objective or activity which is incompatible with [their] aims and principles"; so presumably an organization that advocated war between EU member states could be sued for copyright infringement if they used this flag without explicit permission. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morganwahl (talk • contribs) 15:26, 08 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not the flag of Europe edit

I'd like to remind everyone that Europe, the European Union and the Council of Europe are different things. What this image depicts is the flag of the European Union and the Council of Europe, not the "flag of Europe". There is currently confusion on this point in the filename, on the description page and inside the SVG file itself. Cheers. —Bromskloss (talk) 12:34, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is no 'confusion' thank you, do not treat the people here like idiots. The file name is a compromise for practicality - you can't call an image something stupidly long line "Flag of the European Union and the Council of Europe" for practical reasons and equally it is idiotic to have to separate files displaying the same thing. Please read through the previous debates on this.- J Logan t: 00:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please, keep a civil tone. A long image name like that is perfectly fine. As we have seen, it is the name of the article about the flag. We should call things for what they are even if an alternative name would be shorter. One thing I like about Wikipedia is that there has often been an effort to be very correct on matters like this. I understand from your talk page that you are enthusiastic about the EU, but you have to acknowledge that the EU does not make obsolete the concept of Europe. It is made very clear from the fact that the EU does not include every country in Europe, but even if it did, the continent and the union would be different things.
Oh, I don't know why I bother. I'll go do something else than wiki. If some brave soul will keep up the tradition of correctness, my best wishes to you! —Bromskloss (talk) 23:19, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
1) It is your tone I do not find civil, I do not indent to be uncivil about this. 2) The article was changed in the same manner as it is being brought up here, it is currently in debate and the page is protected. 3) My enthusiasm extends only to interest, this is not europhillic dreaming and I detest my attitude being characterised as such. 4) Of course the EU does not make obsolete the concept of Europe, but the CoE intended the flag for representation of Europe as a whole and includes all but one major European country itself - it is that intent which legitimises the use of Europe (even though there is no need considered the precedent set by Antarctica). 5) The articles can worry about being correct, the Commons should be more concerned about being of practical to editors. Aside from having to deliver a long obscure title every time, it would also require correcting the hundreds of articles using this link not long after they had to all be changed to the current agreement.- J Logan t: 23:07, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Flag of Europe is wrong and biased name, the file should be renamed. --Dezidor (talk) 15:44, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Both CoE and EU use the term "European flag" when referring to this flag. It seems to me that their interpretation is that this flag does not represent the organizations, but a higher order "Europe" entity. They use the flag because they are organizations based around Europe, but it's not their flag. While it doesn't 100% justify the current name, it would mean that calling this the "Flag of the CoE and EU" would also be inaccurate. Kelvinc (talk) 03:08, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Description on Croatian language edit

Please, can someone add description on Croatian language: Zastava Europske unije? Picture is protected. Thanks! --IvanOS (talk) 15:07, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Categorization edit

{{Editprotected}} Category:Flags of the European Union is already in Category:Flags with twelve yellow five-pointed stars, so IMHO:

French description edit

The french description contains elements that advocates for a marial inspiration. "Les créateurs du drapeau, Paul M.G Lévy et Arsène Heitz, voulaient représenter la couronne de 12 étoiles de la Vierge Marie de la rue du Bac à Paris." This marial inspiration has been considered doubtful, is denied by Paul Levy who is the likely author and is debated, in all languages notices. It should be removed.--HugoMe (talk) 19:22, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Broken links edit

As of the protected source code: Please fix the broken links in the summary and in the licensing. Both now in Annex A1: Graphics guide to the European emblem at the EU-Website; see there at Geometrical description and at the bottom Use by third parties. Please remove at the same time the other version with the underline "Proportions", because it's a wrong version, see in the correct description in the box and also described and showed in the above EU-Website-link. --Elisabeth (talk) 14:21, 23 November 2018 (UTC) (Sorry if not perfect, I'm german language native.)Reply

Colours edit

The flag's description has their colours right (http://publications.europa.eu/code/en/en-5000100.htm) but the flag itself doesn't. I can't edit an svg image, otherwise I would have done it myself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lmviterbo (talk • contribs) 17:54, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

The current colors are #003399 for the blue and #FFCC00 for the yellow. So I don't see the problem? --Glentamara (talk) 18:48, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Lmviterbo: I don't see the problem either, but you can edit SVG images in any text editor that is able to save plain (i.e., unformatted) text. See also wikibooks:XML - Managing Data Exchange/SVG#Creating SVG files. Love —LiliCharlie (talk) 18:58, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@LiliCharlie: Thanks for the promptness and thouroughness, LiliCharlie (and thanks, Glentamara, too). My system (Windows 10) renders this flag's blue colour as #00309A and the yellow as #FFCD00, under both Chrome and Firefox. I just realized in the meantime that the colours are correct in Edge. No idea why. I opened the svg file in WordPad and noticed the colours stated as #039 and #fc0. When I changed those two strings to #003399 and #ffcc00, the resulting file shows the correct colours. Should I upload it? --Lmviterbo (talk) 00:59, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
