Can you help me identify the above flower? It seems pretty similar to a Dahlia coccinea, but whereas the dahlia has 8 petals, this one has 10. Thanks, Dori - Talk 16:30, 30 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Are the leaves in the background from the same plant? ¦ Reisio 17:14, 30 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes Dori - Talk 17:33, 30 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
My wife says it's a Cosmos and I think it's a Tithonia. It might help to describe the plant more as those look like vine runners in the background. It's a pretty flower! The image file name says it's in a city park and so you could call the city to see if there's someone who knows what was planted. Marc Kupper 04:56, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
No Cosmos leaves look anywhere close to me. Some Tithonia look closer, but still not right, IMO... and Tithonia does not appear to be even remotely an Illinois flower[1]. I have a copy of FLORA OF ILLINOIS, but it's from 1963 and has no pictures, so I have to lookup all the words for the "systematic treatment" to be of any use. :p Will look into some more flowers in Asteraceae, at least. ¦ Reisio 05:57, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Zinnia perhaps? That's why I don't bother taking pictures of plants in cultivation unless they have labels, usually impossible to get a precise identification. Stan Shebs 14:29, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also composites are often distinguished by their phyllaries, the bracts underneath each flower. So a picture from the side or below is actually better for identification. Stan Shebs 14:35, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Let me preface this by saying that I don't know anything about flowers. I know for sure it's not a Zinnia though as I looked at some Zinnias. They didn't have labels there. It's probably from the Heliantheae tribe (maybe a Rudbeckia or a Helianthella castanea? from a search those appear to be yellow though). I did notice that some had 11 petals. I took a couple of (really) bad pictures that might help, File:Dori id flower 1.jpg and File:Dori id flower 2.jpg. Thanks Dori - Talk 21:47, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
It does look pretty close to Tithonia, I'll probably go with tithonia rotundifolia unless someone objects. Thanks, Dori - Talk 22:35, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
No objection as your other pictures look like tithonia rotundifolia too but I just like plants and not a horticulturalist by training. You have not said what you intend to use this attempt at identification for. If it's your intent to leave the image on Commons then please copy/paste this entire discussion to the talk page for your image. The reason is that the identification at the moment is tentative based on the evidence given. People looking at the image should be able to understand this and later to be able to ask the people involved for more help if needed. Particularly if it happens to not be a tithonia rotundifolia then I would not want to drive some poor soul bonkers. If you do copy/move the discussion then:
  • Please add a note that this discussion originally occurred on Commons:Village_pump#ID_this_flower and was copy/pasted. The goal is to provide a source where someone could look at the edit history if needed.
  • Add a note explaining exactly where/when you took the photo. Right now, the only clue is in the file name which says "Urbana Illinois park 20070928." I'm assuming the city of Urbana has more than one park and the park may be large enough that you should describe where in the park the flowers are located. Again, this provides a source reference in case someone wants to see more of the plant. Marc Kupper 18:58, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's just for Commons, moved the discussion, left the link, and the image already had location tag. Thanks, Dori - Talk 19:15, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
