George VI and Queen Elizabeth Memorial
memorial in London
English: The George VI and Queen Elizabeth Memorial is a memorial to King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, located on The Mall in London. The Mall is the wide tree lined avenue that connects Buckingham Palace in the west, to Admiralty Arch and Trafalgar Square in the east, with the memorial is sited about halfway long the Mall, on its north side. The memorial was opened in two parts - the memorial to George was erected in 1955, three years after his death at the age of 56. The memorial to Elizabeth was unveiled in 2009, seven years after her death aged 101. Elizabeth is depicted at age 51, the age of George's death.
The centrepieces of the monumument are two bronze plinthed standing statues of George and Elizabeth. The statue of George was sculpted by William McMillan, while Philip Jackson sculpted Elizabeth's. Both statues face the Mall, with George's statue being behind and above Elizabeth's. Flanking the statue of Elizabeth are two bronze relief panels sculpted by Paul Day facing the Mall, depicting scenes from her life. From the Mall's street level, the monument incorporates stone steps up to the higher street level of Carlton Gardens, the turning circle at the end of Carlton House Terrace, a street that runs parallel to the Mall. The statue of George is at the front of a patio enclosed with green railings, which adjoins the turning circle. Viewed from the Mall, No.2 Carlton Gardens is the building to the left, while No.3 is to the right. The site is maintained by The Royal Parks.
