Add SANY edit

Please add SANY to this list for SANYO cameras. I'm renaming many that got in since it was not added to this filter. See Special:PrefixIndex/File:SANY. – Adrignola talk 14:47, 21 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Add Panasonic edit

This might be a tricky case, since Panasonic only uses: P1000000 and counting up then at every image. So maybe the easiest way would maybe adding P1000 (see here Special:PrefixIndex/File:P1000). mabdul 06:20, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

OK, per request by User:Saibo I'm doing a research on most images. 757 images and redirects are at the moment uploaded with that prefix.
The first checked bath were made all with panasonic cameras (per EXIF, some/a few have no EXIF data at all since the EXIF data was removed after cropping)
The only false - positive (at the moment after a bath of 57 images) is only File:P1000.png since the name P1000 is part of the tank en:Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte.

Okay until the "line" of File:P1000170 (2).JPG, File:P1000170copyGeirangerfjord.jpg, File:P1000171.JPG, I checked all images and no new false positives or any other situation. mabdul 01:17, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Done (at least for the basic cases) - Not needed. Covered by already covered by File:P[\dA-F][\d\s]+\.JPG Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:42, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Add GEDC edit

Change Foto = edit

{{Editprotected}}

The current filter also blocks anything starting with the Foto- (Swedish for Photo-) meaning photographer, photograph etc. Instead consider replacing it by "Foto_" or whatever the schema is for the filenames it is actually supposed to block. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 15:32, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Why edit

{{Editprotected}} Why are we blacklisting certain filename-prefixes? This blacklisting causes a large amount of extra work when preparing to upload a batch of existing images. For example when using the flickr2commons tool which does not offer a way to alter the prefix efter the blacklist blockage has been placed. Please explain the thinking and the reasons behind the blacklisting of filename-prefixes. If we are going to keep doing this it seems we need a separate batch tool for checking and changing filename-prefixes, or we need to build a check and change function into existing batch-upload-tools. Bengt Nyman (talk) 08:58, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Bengt Nyman: People should upload the file with a valid filename. DESC+[num] are not helpful at all. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:24, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Steinsplitter: You are not answering my question. What are the reason(s) for blacklisting certain filename-prefixes? The risk of trying to upload an existing filename is obvious and results in an "existing filename" warning before starting the upload which consequently can be remedied before initiating the upload. The blacklisting blockade shows only after initiating the upload at which time it is too late to correct other than to interrupt and repeat the entire process. That's not a good solution! Bengt Nyman (talk) 10:49, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
I answered your question above, we don't want filenames such as DESC45454. This sounds like a bug, then then the software has to be fixed (upstream), please file a bug at phab:. Thanks --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:54, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
{{Editprotected}}@Steinsplitter: You did not answer my question. You said: "Poeple should .." That is your present opinion, not a rational answer. The problem that you are trying to solve by blacklisting filename prefixes has been more effectively solved by image banks like flickr and others. The consensus of the industry is to accept submitted filenames as is, and to assign a sequential, numerical suffix making the filename unique and distinguishable. Wikimedia Commons imports the entire flickr file name including the flickr suffix. Blacklisting filename prefixes in uploads from flickr is consequently totally meaningless. I am suggesting that submittals with inadequate filenames should trigger a Wikimedia Commons suffix rendering the filename unique and distinguishable. As it is right now Commons is only pushing Commons problems back to the users and ahead of itself forcing a more rational solution in the future. Bengt Nyman (talk) 11:37, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Bengt Nyman:   Not done Please read Commons:File naming. Please establish community consensus first via COM:VP/P. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:04, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Filenames such as File:DIMG 7792 (2561709488).jpg are not acceptable, please give them better names. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:13, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Bengt Nyman: Steinsplitter is right. We want useful descriptive filenames, not the name given by the camera. Regards, Yann (talk) 15:13, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
These are NOT file names given by the camera, however they are traceable to original databases.Bengt Nyman (talk) 16:01, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Wikimedia Commons is demanding that the file-name also acts as a description of the image. However, Please see paragraph below. Bengt Nyman (talk) 17:44, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
If administrators wish to se the original file description without having to open the image page I believe it would be better if the upload tools were designed to display both file name, description and file size under the Commons thumbnail, just as it presently lists file name and file size. Wikimedia Commons in error edit

The following resites recommendations of the American Society of Media Photographers:

File naming is an important component of file management. Here are the basic rules and recommendations.

Follow basic computer system rules for file-naming.

Use unique file names for each image.
Avoid incorporating job names or descriptions in file names.
Append file names to distinguish originals from derivatives.
Apply file-naming system consistently.
Never use multiple names for the same image file.

Wikimedia Commons' present practice to demand descriptive file-names unnecessary violates several of the recommended ground rules for file-naming. Since this is demanded by Wikimedia Commons for the convenience of image administration it would be better if the above rules were respected and that Wikimedia Commons image thumbnail engine(s) were updated to display the requested information, such as image description or part thereof, without violating accepted rules and good practices for file-naming. Respectfully Bengt Nyman (talk) 05:39, 14 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Recommendations edit

Wikimedia Commons present blacklisting of camera filenames creates an impractical user work-flow.

The long term solution would be to restructure Commons upload tools to where original filenames would be left intact but augmented by a brief description to be shown with Commons image thumbnails, while a more complete description would be shown as present on the image page.

A temporary solution would be to offer a batch-file-renaming feature as part of Commons upload tools.

The present blacklisting of filenames places a barrier in the way of Wikimedia Commons ability to attract quality images. Bengt Nyman (talk) 09:10, 17 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Screenshot edit

{{Edit request}} I suggest adding "Screenshot" Артём 13327 (talk) 15:23, 22 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oppose I’m not convinced… there are a lot of files with that prefix that seem reasonable to me (e.g. File:Screenshot wikiwand.jpg, File:Screenshot of the pre-installed iOS app "Stocks".jpg, File:Screenshot of Blitz3D.png, File:Screenshot Messenger Loading Screen.jpg, File:Screenshot Blender - BigBuckBunny.png). I sort of see your point, but to me completely banning this prefix seems overkill. Any other opinions? Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 16:31, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
  Not done per Lucas. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:31, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
