Missing from the list of flags of former European states is that of the Papal States (independent 752-1870). Image at Wikipedia File:Vatican flag before1808.gif.

I created an SVG version for Commons: Image:Flag of the Papal States (pre 1808).svg. However, I don't think this is the final flag used by the Papal States when they ceased to exist in 1870. The page on Flags of the World is hardly clear about it either. --Himasaram 08:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Inclusion of Manchuria

It was a Japanese puppet state so therefore it was part of Japan and not an independent and if it has to be there I think the flags of Vichy France and other puppet states should be included too.

Portuguese Flag to be removed

The 1830–1910 Flag of the Kingdom of Portugal is wrongfully included on this list of flags of extinct/formerly independant states. Contrary to popular belief, there is no jus gentium differentiation for Portugal from 1139 to this day, although this is a common occurence between other nations. The Kingdom of Portugal was turned into the Portuguese Republic on the same day in 1910 - Portugal is neither legally extinct nor has come under foreign rule since. The Portuguese Republic is lawfully the direct successor of all historic forms of the Portuguese Nation, therefore this flag remains a legal state symbol, albeit a historic one. I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I think quite a few entries on this list are more properly historical flags, rather than flags of extinct states-- Burundi, Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya and South Africa, just to name some African ones. AtomicIce (talk) 03:36, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
