License template for the Historical Permission Notice and Disclaimer (X11R5 license)

The template automatically sets the following categories: HPND

Usage

{{HPND |1= |2= |copyright-notice= |no-nonendorsement= |related-entities= |no-short-warranty= |no-long-warranty= |monosyndeton-variant= |definite-article-variant= |no-of= |unspliced-variant= }}

This is a license which was used for X11 releases 1–5, Python versions 0.9.0–1.2 and Wayland versions up to 1.8.92, amongst other software. It is sometimes[1] called the "X11 license" or "MIT X11 license"; however, this is ambiguous with the X11R6 licence (MIT/Expat plus non-endorsement, called "X11 License" by the FSF) despite being a completely different wording.

The unambiguous name Historical Permission Notice and Disclaimer for X11R5 licenses was coined in 2002[2] and is used by both the OSI and the FSF.

TemplateData

TemplateData is a way to store information about template parameters (the description of those and of the whole template) for both humans and machines. It is used by VisualEditor and possibly other tools like Upload Wizard.

Existing template documentation
At Wikimedia Commons, it is recommended to use {{TemplateBox}} with either ‎useTemplateData=1 or ‎useTemplateData=only on the ‎/doc subpage and transcluding it with {{Documentation}} into the template. ‎<nowiki>-tags can be wrapped around the arguments, if required, to avoid templates being expanded.

Newly created template documentation and imports
Another option, especially for imported templates, or for users with JSON experience, is placing raw ‎<templatedata>-tags into the Wikitext of the template, as described in various Wikipediae.

Discussion
There is an ongoing discussion about that matter. Feel invited to comment if you are experienced in either way, your time permits and if you like to share your opinion or to make a suggestion.
