Reason

Hm... after seeing this in action for a couple of weeks, I'm not so sure it's a great idea. Notifying the uploader is good but I think more specific personal messages are better for getting exactly what they did wrong across, e.g. "Screenshots don't create new copyright" / "Logos are generally unfree, so please don't upload them here" rather than this generic message. What if we added a field for reason to both this and {{Copyvio}}. Not only would it solve the problem you mention but also the anxiety I feel trying to empty Category:Against policy and going "Why is this an obvious copyviolation?" -Samulili 11:56, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

If you can't tell why it's a copyvio, definitely don't delete it. Untag it and post on the image talk page or tagger's talk page requesting them to nominate it on COM:DEL instead, since it's not clear. This is good because it still makes Category:against policy smaller even though you didn't delete anything. :) Or you can nominate it yourself like Arnomane does.

I don't think making the deletion process any more complicated is a good idea because many people already are confused, by the number of nominations in wrong places. --pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:04, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Wording too strong

Despite the fact that this template is only used for so-called "obvious" copyvios, in some cases these may be uploaded by the original author, or otherwise okay. I think we should avoid language implying that the work is definitely a copyvio, like "pay attention to copyright," since this may scare or offend users who didn't do anything wrong. Something more like "One of your uploads has been flagged as a possible copyright violation, and will be deleted if an explanation is not provided." Dcoetzee (talk) 23:29, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

I agree with your proposal. Often enough a supposed copyvio isn't obvious. The author may always come up with a proof that it is no copyvio. However we'd need a broad consensus on this, otherwise we don't get every translation reworded. PanchoS (talk) 16:17, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

The only strong wording for me as a non-native English speaker is the phrase "pay attention to copyright".

The suggested phrasing "One of your uploads has been flagged as a possible copyright violation" is to me just a slightly more complicated version of the current "[image] has been marked as a copyright violation."

But I agree that "pay attention to copyright" should be altered. I would suggest "Copyright is important". If that is too bold change, then at least a "please" could be added, e.g. "Please respect copyright", which would be a direct translation of the German phrasing "Bitte beachte Urheberrechte" and not need any translation rewording.

If I may weigh in as someone who recently got very (unreasonably) angry about receiving such a notice.... It seems to me that the current wording is a bit abrupt and rude. It came across to me as harsh and high-handed. I would suggest somewhat softer wording, and also adding a mention of COM:UNDEL as a means of recourse and appeal. Personally I think I would not have been so upset if the language were slightly softer, and a means of adjutification were identified in the note. I tried to bring the ideas above together. The phrase, "that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose" seems to me to be of little use. The links in the following sentence provide clarity and should be emphasized. Since most users will be concerned with images, I would consider placing "Commons:Image casebook" first; readers that only view the first link will find it most helpful.

I actually have an issue with the phrase "The file you added will soon be deleted." That seems too strongly worded and assumes the file is definitively a copyright violation. It also contradicts the sentence immediately following it. A simple swap to "may soon be deleted" would resolve it imo. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 12:55, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Broken link in some translations

Hi, I encountered a broken link to the image discussion page in several languages.
I felt comfortable fixing the German, German (formal) and French versions by replacing the broken link to the talk page by a link to the image description page itself (exactly analogous to the English version, see my change).
However the respective changes in Nynorsk, Norsk (Bokmål), Polish, Slovakian and Swedish should be done by native speakers.

possible copyright violation

It is suggested to add the word possible to "has been marked as a [possible] copyright violation".
Regretably on my monitor this will cause an additional linebreak separating the help desk link to Commons:Help//desk, maybe we can save some space with removing the blank line before the deletion warning? --Martin H. (talk) 23:00, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

At least for me, when file name is entered (like here) it breaks lines even now. For what it is worth, "For images, you may" may be shortened to "Also, you may" --Justass (talk) 23:16, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

‘Kinder wording’

On Twitter, user @16kbit notes: ‘dear @Wikipedia, I wish you would address new contributors like human beings. Why not use a kinder wording?’. He refers to the e-mail notification he or someone got when this template has been inserted on their talk page. The e-mail only contains a shortened version of the copyvio message: ‘Notification of possible copyright violation for [File Name]’. I couldn’t find this message in the template subpages, where is it located? We could replace it by the full note, or at least a longer and nicer variant indeed. I think it would be good to add a greeting in the beginning of the e-mail too, but that may be something to talk over on Phabricator instead. Oh, thanks for following up!

Indeed, I recently was assisting some people in creating their wikipedia user accounts, and doing their first edits – in this case, an artist, aged 78. The first thing she receives is the automated welcome message left on her user page with some advice for beginners – so far, so good. She then went through the file upload process, which is well engineered, and gives clear indications in an appropriate tone. However after having uploaded her first image (her own artistic work), she soon receives that email containing the one-liner "Notification of possible copyright violation for NameOfFile". Following the link, she finds the Copyvionote template which, in that circumstances, has a pretty harsh tone ("Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing."). This interaction didn't leave a very positive impression of the wikipedia community.

I believe that the wording, both of the email and the template, could do a better effort of assuming good faith on the contributors part, and use a less menacing tone. --1904.CC (talk) 21:52, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Unclear instructions

The documentation says Message template notifying uploaders of files having been tagged as possible copyright violations. Note: COM:Deletion policy requires the copyvio template be used instead. ... What does that mean? It sounds like this template should not be used, and the copyvio template should be put on the user's talk page, but that doesn't make sense to me. As a result, I propose the following amendments to the template:

If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please refer to Creative Commons' instructions to license your file under a free Creative Commons license and request undeletion for the same time. Alternatively, you may also consult this page on how to send a permission email to our volunteer response team.
