Template talk:Low quality

What does this template refer to? Parameter addition needed. edit

This template's text states that the images it tags should be "replaced." While I'm sure that's appropriate in the case of some low quality images, it is also used in cases, such as File:Patricia M. Harper - Official Portrait - 79th GA.jpg, where replacement would be inappropriate (the purpose of the image is to show the "official portrait" from a specific time, which necessitates a the use of a particular photo). If the template said "supplement," it would fit those cases (a higher quality image of Harper would be appreciated, so long as the original is kept). So I'm suggesting that a new parameter, replace=no be added to the template for those circumstances. The text for the new template would be as follows:

This image (or all images in this category/page) is very small, unfixably too light/dark, or may not adequately illustrate the subject of the picture. If a higher-quality version of this particular image is available, please replace this one; otherwise, a supplemental image illustrating this subject and available under a free license should be found or provided and uploaded as a separate file.

This would make it clear that an additional image would help, but that it shouldn't overwrite the existing image, which is what is suggested by the template's current text. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 09:05, 7 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Seeing no objections, I've added the parameter (and documented the existing blank problem description parameter). --Philosopher Let us reason together. 13:19, 21 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
