Template talk:PD-Edison Records

The U.S. federal government can own copyrights that have been transferred to it. Thus, I'm not sure the template's reasoning is correct. The works may still be copyrighted. Superm401 - Talk 04:49, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

The works have been released to the public domain, per the "instrument of gift", which is common practice for archival gifts of historical interest. The U.S. federal government does physically possess some donated archival materials which remain copyrighted, but they're copyrighted by the original owners. Yes, the U.S. federal government can own copyrights on some materials, but it just doesn't on this type of donated historical archives.--Pharos 22:46, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
All right. I do understand that it's rare for the U.S. to own copyrights on archival works. Some evidence that the Edison works in particular are PD would be helpful, but I see no reason to doubt it at present. Superm401 - Talk 21:31, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

On the Wikipedia site, there is a discussion concerning the copyright status of the Edison Records recordings. Basically, the copyright status of the recordings may be uncertain. -- Gazebo (talk) 03:40, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Most of these works were published before 1925, and Edisson Records defuncted in 1929. So, Template:PD-US-expired and Template:PD-Old? Account Ivan (talk) 00:54, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think these will start being in the public domain for certain, with the updated music copyright act, musical recordings will start to go into the public domain starting Jan 2022. I'm not a lawyer, but that's my interpretation. So this template will likely need to be replaced as we move forward. Oaktree b (talk) 21:01, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Account Ivan and Oaktree b: I have adjusted the template. Hopefully, the adjustments will be useful. --Gazebo (talk) 05:47, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, it will be useful! Oaktree b (talk) 12:41, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
