Template talk:PD-font

Wording is unclear

I would like to propose that we work on the wording of this template. It appears to state that SVG files cannot contain only text rendered with a nonfree font. However, this discussion on Template talk:PD-textlogo seems to indicate that this is not the case.

I think the main problem is just that it is being applied where it doesn't belong, so perhaps clarifying that the image is of the font itself would be a good idea. Trlkly (talk) 08:38, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

The wording is unclear because the license tags used on Commons are not written by lawyers or anyone who fully grasps the complexities of copyright law in the various jurisdictions and special use scenarios, as promulgated by legislatures and courts. Or if they do know something, it may not be up-to-date.
This layman's "best guess" approach creates many problems, including determining if something is a copyright violation. Just a casual look at the Deletion Requests shows lots of divided opinions, with editors writing "authoritatively" when they are merely giving the opinions of other uniformed editors. Unfortunately, there is such resistance to change on Commons that we are likely stuck with system of license tags; be they inaccurate or incorrect: we'd never know. (For your infromation) Summary, (1) Japanese court tends to regard 'sho', Japanese calligraphy, as a work of art, in condition the 'sho' is mainly the object of art appreciation. So such 'sho' is subject to copyright protection. (2) 'Template:PD-font', where rasterized expression (e.g.bitmap) by fonts and typefaces is not subject to copyright protection in US and Japan.(see Wikipedia:Public domain#Fonts), is not applicable to the 'sho' of 1 criteria. (3) 'Template:PD-Japan-exempt' is not applicable to the certain 'sho' of Reiwa era (令和) raised by Japan gov CCS Suga, because Japanese Copyright Act limits such exemption to 'laws, regulations, notifications, instructions, circular notices and judgments, decisions, orders and decrees of law courts, and translations or compilations of these'. While that US Copyright Act allows exemption very widely that 'a work prepared by an officer or employee of the federal government as part of that person's official duties' is put on PD.--Kyuri1449 (talk) 10:27, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

@Kyuri1449: That's why you should better to type them with an already freeware-like font, just pick up one from Noto series, because in such cases, even a script/letter/alphabet... is copyrightable as calligraphy, its copyright status can however be simply covered by one or more software licenses, especially in this case, you're feel free to use {{OFL}}. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:07, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
