Template deprecation? edit

{{editprotected|temppro=yes}} We now have the CC0 template. Should we deprecate this template for future use? --Siddharth Patil (talk) 02:28, 27 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

At least we could add an usage note (somehow similar to the on {{Copyrighted free use}}): If this is your own work, please use {{Cc-zero}} instead. --McZusatz (talk) 12:33, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think we should add this as well, as CC0 is just better at releasing a work to the public domain universally. Adding a {{Editprotected}} right now. pandakekok9 13:15, 26 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Btw, use {{Self|cc-zero}} instead of {{Cc-zero}}, to clarify authorship. pandakekok9 13:16, 26 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Pandakekok9: This template is used on a crazy number of pages: 1,567,000, according to Jarry1250's transclusion counter. I am hesitate to fulfill this request. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh Name me 19:37, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Since it’s used on a great number of pages, hard deprecating it (i.e. adding a warning on all pages transcluding it) is certainly not an option. Adding a warning on the documentation subpage doesn’t require template administrator access, any autoconfirmed user can edit it. Thus I’m declining this as an edit request without taking position on the substance of the question. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:46, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! edit

I just wanted to say, thanks a lot to whoever added the "if this is not possible" statement. Until it was added I was quite concerned that my public domain release statement might be "undone" by a later court decision that you can't release works into the PD in the US. I was added both this template and free use to all my stuff, which was rather confusing since that template proclaimed that the work was copyrighted. Thanks a lot. Only to be used if uploader = creator? edit

Commons:Copyright tags says:

{{PD-self}} - for works released into the public domain by their creators.

This template says:

I, the creator of this work, hereby release it into the public domain.

One of these must be wrong, as it is possible that the creator released it into the public domain, but is another person than the uploader (or whoever added the template). For example, in Image:Toolbox.jpg, the creator released the photo into the public domain, but now it looks like I was the creator, because I added the template. --Head 20:01, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

For that, there's {{PD-user}} and {{PD-user-w}} -- Duesentrieb(?!) 23:40, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
But the creator is not a Wikipedia user! --Head 13:18, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
then it should be tagged as {{PD-because|released by John Doe}}. Maybe we should also have {{PD-by|John Doe}} for that... what do you think? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:34, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think that would be a good idea. Any other thoughts on this? --Head 13:37, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Perhaps an area for documenting the release as well if possible. Kellen 85.178.204.101 14:53, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think you're looking for {{PD-author}}. pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:42, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shouldn't some of these be mentioned in the template page? I'm thinking about something like:
For other PD templates, see Commons:Copyright tags#Public_domain and Template:PD-user-w.
I had been looking a long time for such lists, and did not think to look at "Copyright tags" or at this discussion page... I'd have done this change myself already, but the page is protected. -- Jokes Free4Me 18:09, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe options should be better explained here:

I have just incorporated most of the above useful links to a See also in the documentation page. See Template talk:PD-self#See also. I find it is more useful to have the information on alternatives immediately visible to the reader of the template page. Please check I've got it right though. -84user (talk) 15:23, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

What the... edit

There are errant characters at the bottom of this template. Could somebody fix that? -- Denelson83 07:47, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The author edit

Would it make sense for us to change it from "I, the author of this work..." to "I, the copyright holder of this work..." as some people using this template are uploading stuff created by their grandparents (who have since died) and not created by themselves. Yonatan talk 15:55, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't see a problem with it. Kelly Martin 20:35, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also, "this applies worldwide" might need to be changed to "this applies in all jurisdictions where it's possible for a copyright holder to relinquish his copyrights." Yonatan talk 21:42, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thats why we have "In case this is not legally possible: I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law." ... but yes, I the copyright holder.. thats fine.. All the self templates should probably be adjusted the same way. --Gmaxwell 21:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just for information, who has the right to exercise the inalienable moral rights in the EU after the death of the author? Kelly Martin 21:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes I understand why we have the not legally possible bit but in that case the worldwide bit contradicts what follows it (as we're essentially saying this is released worldwide except for in places that don't allow it and I suppose there are such places). Yonatan talk 21:58, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can you point me to the definition of "copyright holder"? ~~helix84 14:54, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't know how to explain it other than the holder of the copyrights. By default this is the author of the work but you can transfer these (or at least some of these) rights to someone else (a corporate entity, say if you work as a photographer for someone, they're probably gonna own the copyrights of the photos you take for them). Yonatan talk 22:55, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Works based on public domain material edit

If I take a work that has been released into the public domain, and then make a work based on that, then if I wanted to upload it and release it into the public, what would be best to put for the license, and for the author?

Thanks very much for your help, sorry for posting in the wrong place. CountingPine 20:35, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category edit

On a previous version of this template (over a year ago), there was something that additonally added another category (Self-published work), but it was removed without an explanation. Can it be resotred? Da Man2 23:22, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, good idea, but... it would be useless, since PD-self is itself a subcategory of Self-published work. Michelet-密是力 04:53, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Shouldn't "I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law." say "... are restricted by law"

restricted edit

Shouldn't "I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law." say "... are restricted by law" 203.12.22.56 04:59, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'd say it sounds a bit better, indeed, but it has the same meaning. These highly used templates shoulden't be changed too often, since this implies the corresponding update in all "client" pages in all wikis for the server. Michelet-密是力 05:29, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
"I allow it without any X, unless X is required by law." is the current formulation, and proposed is "I allow it without any X, unless X is restricted by law". You think the latter sounds correct? --Gmaxwell 05:57, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well - seen that way... Michelet-密是力 06:43, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

irrevocably? edit

Shouldn't the alternative text (for countries where releasing to PD is not possibel) say something like "irrevocably" or "perpetually"? As it stands now, the right to use is granted as long as the author doesn't change his mind. --Tgr 13:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I edit

A couple of issues arise when using this template due to the wiki-nature of Commons. First of all, why the first person? Who is "I" when this is displayed on non-personal pages (i.e. all pages outside the userspace). The original uploader? What if new versions were uploaded over it (with non-trivial changes)? The license may still apply, but it's no longer "I", it's "we". What if the uploader isn't the only copyright holder? Like the file is the work of more than one individual. Or what if the uploader represents a company or website? Sure, they can use the author parameter, but that makes even less sense. Why not just use {{PD-author}}? If you're uploading for someone else you shouldn't be using PD-self. And why is it {{{author}}} and not {{{copyright_holder}}}? And even if you use author=, it still says "I" in the next line. Also, the "I" thing runs counter to COM:OWN (I'm not talking about "owning" the actual file, but "owning" the description page). Rocket000 18:47, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, the only alternative would be to use PD-author. But in the case of uploading a new version, the problem to handle with two or more user names exist further. --GeorgHHtalk   18:31, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Substitution edit

The template doesn't say whether or not it should be substituted, but I'm assuming it must. Otherwise, research into the terms of the tag at the time it was applied to a particular image might become necessary.--User:Doug(talk contribs) 00:45, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

release or dedicate edit

In the United States the normal language (and that recommended by the USPTO) is to say that one "dedicates [a work] to the public", rather than that one "releases [a work] into the public domain".--User:Doug(talk contribs) 23:15, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

English version edit

Among the various language options at the bottom of the template is English, which is a redlink. Could that be removed? I just can't imagine why we would need an unofficial English translation of a template which is already in English, and I think it would just look a little better without the redlink. Nyttend (talk) 02:21, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

English version??? edit

What is the point of having two versions of the same thing? This will only create problems since the two might differ, and all possible changes will have to be made in double. The official version is the English one, so which one does this mean if the two differ? And in fact why is there an English translation of something in English anyway? Could someone please delete this redundant template and remove its link from {{PD-self}}. ChrisDHDR 08:54, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have you realized, that {{PD-self}} is _not_ the/an English version, but rather the _localized_ version (that means it is displayed in whatever language you have specified in your preferences)? --Slomox (talk) 12:45, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Grammar error edit

{{Editprotected}}

When the author option is used, it produces a grammar error — for example, {{PD-self|author=I, [[User:Rfgagel|Rfgagel]]}} produces "I, Rfgagel, the copyright holder of this work, hereby releases" and "I, Rfgagel grants". Could a toggle be added so that "releases" and "grants" would be changed to "release" and "grant" if the author option is used? Nyttend (talk) 14:04, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

But author is mainly for when you want to avoid using personal pronouns and have an alternate name(s) you wish to use. Why not simply use "author=[[User:Rfgagel|Rfgagel]]"? If it's not your own work, is a template called PD-self really the best choice? Rocket000 (talk) 15:44, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Not done. There is already a toggle: It uses first person when no author parameter is specified and third person when the author parameter is given, which is quite how it should be. You are not supposed to use "I, some_name" in the param, only the name goes there. If you are releasing the image yourself, don't use the author param. This message contains another typo, but the page at Translatewiki is protected. I tried asking at translatewiki:Thread:Support/How to correct a wrong message?, but I'm not sure whether I asked at the right place. I've also noticed a few other typos in the Swedish texts, so it would be nice to be able to fix them. For example, some of the Creative Commons licence statements say that a file has been licensed whereas other statements say that a file has been released and there was also some has been made available, which is inconsistent. --Stefan4 (talk) 01:56, 15 December 2011 (UTC) {{Editprotected}}Reply
