Template deprecation?

Since it’s used on a great number of pages, hard deprecating it (i.e. adding a warning on all pages transcluding it) is certainly not an option. Adding a warning on the documentation subpage doesn’t require template administrator access, any autoconfirmed user can edit it. I just wanted to say, thanks a lot to whoever added the "if this is not possible" statement. Until it was added I was quite concerned that my public domain release statement might be "undone" by a later court decision that you can't release works into the PD in the US. I was added both this template and free use to all my stuff, which was rather confusing since that template proclaimed that the work was copyrighted. Thanks a lot. Deco 02:43, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Only to be used if uploader = creator?

Commons:Copyright tags says:

{{PD-self}} - for works released into the public domain by their creators.

This template says:

I, the creator of this work, hereby release it into the public domain. 

One of these must be wrong, as it is possible that the creator released it into the public domain, but is another person than the uploader (or whoever added the template). For example, in Image:Toolbox.jpg, the creator released the photo into the public domain, but now it looks like I was the creator, because I added the template. --Head 20:01, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

The author

Would it make sense for us to change it from "I, the author of this work..." to "I, the copyright holder of this work..." as some people using this template are uploading stuff created by their grandparents (who have since died) and not created by themselves. I don't know how to explain it other than the holder of the copyrights. By default this is the author of the work but you can transfer these (or at least some of these) rights to someone else (a corporate entity, say if you work as a photographer for someone, they're probably gonna own the copyrights of the photos you take for them). Works based on public domain material

If I take a work that has been released into the public domain, and then make a work based on that, then if I wanted to upload it and release it into the public, what would be best to put for the license, and for the author?

• PD-self is OK for that case.

On a previous version of this template (over a year ago), there was something that additonally added another category (Self-published work), but it was removed without an explanation. Can it be resotred? Da Man2 23:22, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

irrevocably?

Shouldn't the alternative text (for countries where releasing to PD is not possibel) say something like "irrevocably" or "perpetually"? As it stands now, the right to use is granted as long as the author doesn't change his mind. --Tgr 13:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

I

A couple of issues arise when using this template due to the wiki-nature of Commons. First of all, why the first person? Who is "I" when this is displayed on non-personal pages (i.e. all pages outside the userspace). The original uploader? What if new versions were uploaded over it (with non-trivial changes)? The license may still apply, but it's no longer "I", it's "we". What if the uploader isn't the only copyright holder? Like the file is the work of more than one individual. Or what if the uploader represents a company or website? Sure, they can use the author parameter, but that makes even less sense. Why not just use {{PD-author}}? If you're uploading for someone else you shouldn't be using PD-self. And why is it {{{author}}} and not {{{copyright_holder}}}? And even if you use author=, it still says "I" in the next line. Also, the "I" thing runs counter to COM:OWN (I'm not talking about "owning" the actual file, but "owning" the description page). Rocket000 18:47, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Substitution

The template doesn't say whether or not it should be substituted, but I'm assuming it must. Otherwise, research into the terms of the tag at the time it was applied to a particular image might become necessary.--User:Doug^{(talk • contribs)} 00:45, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

release or dedicate

In the United States the normal language (and that recommended by the USPTO) is to say that one "dedicates [a work] to the public", rather than that one "releases [a work] into the public domain".--User:Doug^{(talk • contribs)} 23:15, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

English version

Among the various language options at the bottom of the template is English, which is a redlink. Could that be removed? I just can't imagine why we would need an unofficial English translation of a template which is already in English, and I think it would just look a little better without the redlink. English version???

What is the point of having two versions of the same thing? This will only create problems since the two might differ, and all possible changes will have to be made in double. The official version is the English one, so which one does this mean if the two differ? And in fact why is there an English translation of something in English anyway? Grammar error

When the author option is used, it produces a grammar error — for example, {{PD-self|author=I, [[User:Rfgagel|Rfgagel]]}} produces "I, Rfgagel, the copyright holder of this work, hereby releases" and "I, Rfgagel grants". Could a toggle be added so that "releases" and "grants" would be changed to "release" and "grant" if the author option is used? Nyttend (talk) 14:04, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

But author is mainly for when you want to avoid using personal pronouns and have an alternate name(s) you wish to use. Why not simply use "author=[[User:Rfgagel|Rfgagel]]"? If it's not your own work, is a template called PD-self really the best choice? Rocket000 (talk) 15:44, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

 Not done. There is already a toggle: It uses first person when no author parameter is specified and third person when the author parameter is given, which is quite how it should be. You are not supposed to use "I, some_name" in the param, only the name goes there. If you are releasing the image yourself, don't use the author param. This message contains another typo, but the page at Translatewiki is protected. I tried asking at translatewiki:Thread:Support/How to correct a wrong message?, but I'm not sure whether I asked at the right place. I've also noticed a few other typos in the Swedish texts, so it would be nice to be able to fix them.
