what do we call ourselves edit

I realise this was copied directly from Wikipedia, but it's a bit of a stretch to automatically call a Commons user a Wikipedia user, don't you think? :)

But what can we call ourselves? Commonsians?

--pfctdayelise 03:26, 27 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

A Wikimedia user, or Wikimedian perhaps? Actually this probably needs to be asked on the Village pump, because I doubt many other people are watching this page. -- Solipsist 08:50, 28 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Problem with two word usernames edit

Hi, when the welcom message came up on my user talk page it correctly read my username for the Hello and welcome part, but read it wrong for the gallery part. I've looked at the code to spot the problem but couldn't find it. Maybe someone else can? /Lokal Profil 21:34, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The problem seems to be that external links don't support spaces (for good reason) and that {{PAGENAME}} brings down the name with spaces. If there is a simmilar command to {{PAGENAME}} which brings down the pagename with underscores that would solve the problem.
I realise that this problem is quickly worked around by the user (with some wikiknowledge), but since this is the welcome message for people who are potentially completly new to Wikimedia I think that its importent that it works. /Lokal Profil 23:22, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note, I didn't realise that problem existed. {{{PAGENAMEE}}} will insert an underscore instead of a space in multi-word page names, so I changed it to that and it should work now. Although I think they have turned on the extra tabs for everyone now, so you should already have some tabs at the top that say "gallery", "orphans", "untagged"... right? :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:49, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reform edit

OK, with our WelcomeBot implemented, I really want to reform this to maximise its usefulness and relevance. What do n00bs not know? Licensing, deletion guidelines, must categorise. They seem to be the three things I notice the most. With the welcome log (see previous link) implemented, we can start to analyse what newbies seem to know, what they need to know, and what they don't. So I'm just warning y'all... I plan to make some big changes to this template if necessary. pfctdayelise (translate?) 17:13, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Line breaks at the end break signatures edit

Could someone remove the extra linebreaks from the end of this template? They cause {{welcome}} ~~~~ to be rendered as the template ending with a line break, with the following line containing the signature preceded by a space, which causes the signature to be rendered in monotype in a grey box. soviet coat of arms of soviet union 1946 edit

Hello, could you please realiser the embleme of the union sovietique of 1946 with the finoise language(tongue) besides the derniere version thanking you in advance good day thank you

Third version (1946-1956)

The state coat of arms of the Soviet Union, between 1946 and 1956The number of republics in the USSR became 16 shortly before the Great Patriotic War, but the coat of arms was changed to reflect this only after the war. By a Decision of Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 26, 1946, all 16 constituent republics were represented on the coat of arms. The USSR State Motto was inscribed on 16 ribbons in 16 languages (Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Moldavian, Finnish languages were added to the previous version). Inscriptions in Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Uzbek, Tajik, Kazakh, Kyrgyz languages were updated due to the transfer from the Latin alphabet to Cyrillic alphabet of respective republics. thank you --Dunkerqueenflandre (talk) 10:14, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

The first line currently reads, "Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, !". The exclamation point directly after the comma is grammatically incorrect, unless I'm missing something. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

When the template is included in a user page, it reads "Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, username!". At least it should, have you seen a case where it didn't? --rimshottalk 06:07, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
See User talk:Cynwolfe for an example. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:07, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's weird. My interface language is Portuguese, and viewing this template the username (in this case, the page name, that is, "Welcome") does show up. However, if I try http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Welcome?uselang=en, the page title doesn't appear between the comma and the exclamation point... I have no idea what could be causing this, but I'm guessing the error must be in {{Welcome/en}} or {{Autotranslate}}. --Waldir talk 16:10, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Portuguese uses {{PAGENAME}} for the name, while English and German, which both don't work, use {{{1|{{BASEPAGENAME}}}}}. Someone more familiar with the wiki syntax might find out why this doesn't work. --rimshottalk 16:23, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that helped to trim down the error. It stems from the fact that when you specify a parameter, even if you don't pass any value to it, it is considered as a variable that has been set, so the {{{1|}}} construct in the English and German versions doesn't use the part to the right of the pipe, which is reserved for the default value, when the parameter is not passed. A workaround is to use the {{#if:}} function, as in:
{{#if:{{{1|}}}
|{{Autotranslate|{{{1}}}|base=Welcome}}
|{{Autotranslate|base=Welcome}}
}}
That returns false if the parameter {{{1}}} is an empty string, even if it has been set. This would fix the template, but someone more savvy might be able to simplify or minimize the above markup (or both). Meanwhile, I'll check whether there's a bug report in MediaWiki to make the construct behave like this and second it, as it would greatly simplify many templates. --Waldir talk 17:20, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Update: I added a comment to bug 4708. --Waldir talk 17:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Remove non-working language links edit

I would like to propose to remove non-working language links from this template. For many years now language links do not work, as clicking on them does not get you to that language version of the template. They were removed from majority of license templates. Unless there are some good reasons to keep them, I would like to remove them from {{Welcome}} as well. --Jarekt (talk) 13:08, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

All of the ones I tested work just fine. Which are the ones that are not working? LX (talk, contribs) 17:17, 19 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Not a single one works for me. For example go to User talk:Jsappe and click on any language links. For me nothing happens if I do so. --Jarekt (talk) 17:54, 19 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Works for me in both Firefox and Chromium, both logged in with Monobook skin and logged out with Vector, so it's probably something specific to your browser or user configuration. Make sure you have JavaScript enabled and check your console for errors. In any case: please don't remove any links. LX (talk, contribs) 21:53, 19 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I hope I am not proposing to many very hard "improvements". --Jarekt (talk) 02:42, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
The text can be edited here, but i can move that to commons. The i18n can be added when the other stuff is fix and stable :-). If you can identify the message that gave you the impression that this page would be the appropriate place for your question, so that we can clarify that message, it would be helpful. You can upload pictures and other media to Commons by following the instructions in the first steps guide. Use the move link edit

I think that the „link” word should be linked too, to disambugate the target of the link for the readers. Hári Zalán (talk) 13:14, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Hári Zalán: I just came across this. Do you mean it should appear this way: move link or else? ─ The Aafī (talk) 22:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@TheAafi: Yes, exactly, thank you. Hári Zalán (talk) 05:30, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Image edit

{{Edit request}} The current bottom-left image (Gnome-edit-delete.svg) doesn't work (because it can't be found at /v1/AUTH_mw/wikipedia-commons-local-public.96/9/96/Gnome-edit-delete.svg), so it should be replaced.

I suggest we replace it with an image that was used before for this, such as Nuvola gnome-fs-trash-full.svg (picked from above discussion). — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 17:02, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
