I'm glad you found your way here. My name is Anil Öztas and I am thrilled to be part of this fantastic community that enables the sharing and collection of free media content.

What am I doing here anyway?

As an enthusiastic amateur photographer, I have decided to make my work available to the public. My focus is on providing photos that can be used for various projects. I strongly believe that photos are a powerful form of communication and can help impart knowledge and tell stories.

My interest in Wikimedia Commons began about 15 years ago when I started sharing my photos on the internet and looking for ways to make them available to others. I came across Wikimedia Commons and was intrigued by the idea of having a platform where people from all over the world could share their work to make it freely available to others. It was a turning point in my photographic journey when I realised the possibilities of integrating my photographic work into a wider context and contributing to the general educational and cultural resource. In July 2023 through a funding by Wikimedia Germany I got a software license for Capture One (read more in the german Wikipedia).

A variety of subjects can be found in my photos, ranging from mainly landscape, nature and animal photos to architecture, industrial or product photography. I am equally fascinated by the beauty and uniqueness of these different areas. Each subject offers a new opportunity to express my creative skills and take others on a visual journey. I always strive for high quality and aesthetics. I believe that a well-designed photograph is not only aesthetically pleasing, but can also tell a story and evoke emotion.

Wikimedia Commons gives me the opportunity to share my passion for photography with a wide audience, while allowing others to use my photos for their own projects and purposes. It is an amazing experience to see how they are used in different contexts and projects, be it in scientific papers, school materials, newspaper articles or other offerings.

I am also always open to feedback or questions. Constructive feedback helps me to develop and improve my skills. If you have any suggestions, questions or are interested in my work, please do not hesitate to contact me. This can be done either by email (anil.oeztas@wikipedia.de) or via my discussion page.

You may use my photos

I usually make my photos available here under a licence that requires attribution. This means that they can be used on the condition that I am named as the author (Photo: Anil Öztas). I take the liberty of saying that this should be a matter of course.

If you are using my photos in a project that is not part of Wikimedia, please email me at anil.oeztas@wikipedia.de with the URL for online media or ISBN or author:in and title for print publications or eBooks. I am always very interested to see how my photos are used and I am also happy to receive a copy of the publication as a thank you for the use of my photos and recognition or appreciation of the work.

Excursus: Copyright

I would like to say a few words about copyright and licensing conditions, especially in relation to the content made available here on Wikimedia Commons. Copyright is a legal protection for the intellectual property rights of artists, authors, photographers and other creative people. Most of the content found here is protected by copyright - whether or not it is freely accessible. As a community dedicated to sharing knowledge and creative works, Wikimedia Commons is based on the idea of open access and collaboration.

This is done through the eponymous licences of the non-profit organisation Creative Commons (CC), which were created 23 years ago by now and are the foundation of the concept of free content, in addition to motivating contributors to make their works available to third parties without charging royalties or other costs. CC licences offer an alternative to the traditional copyright model; instead of having all rights reserved, also known as all rights reserved, CC licences allow certain rights of use to be transferred to others free of charge, subject to certain conditions. The idea behind this is to support the freedom of sharing and the promotion of creativity and innovation. By facilitating the use and distribution of creative works, these licences enable people around the world to learn from and develop the ideas of others and create new works.

If you have found my user page and made it this far, you have probably already heard about all this - or maybe not, because otherwise you probably wouldn't have read on. In any case, many people who use photos made available here for their projects are still unaware of these modalities. We can only speculate about the reasons. It cannot be due to the supposed complexity of the licence text, as the abridged versions in particular take less than one minute to read and are easy to grasp. I therefore assume that the causes of this ignorance are, on the one hand, a kind of convenience in continuing to read and, on the other hand, a certain free culture - both can be a form of ignorance, but, as I have already written, we can only speculate about the reasons.

It is important to comply with licensing terms and not only to protect the rights of authors. By respecting licensing terms, we show our respect for creators and enable others to freely use and distribute their works. It also fosters a culture of open exchange and collaboration, which is the foundation for the growth of knowledge and creativity.
