Enforcing Wikimedia policy at Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons was launched as a repository of free multimedia files, that can be used like locally uploaded files on all other projects on the Wikimedia servers. Since it was launched, the project undertook additional roles, and has been populated by contributors with independent views about its goals. For instance, the existing policy that "files uploaded to the Commons have to be useful for some Wikimedia project" is openhandedly interpreted as:

"Files uploaded to the Commons have to be somehow useful at some time, even if they are unlikely to be ever used directly on any Wikimedia project"

I'm fond of this interpretation as long it is compatible with existing policies enforced at all other Wikimedia projects.

In recent months, a wide collection of free cartoons by Carlos Latuff has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Some cartoons are appeased, some are mirthful, some are furious, some racist and a few are openly antisemitic. A few of his works are used in Wikipedia and most of them are only found in Commons, just because their number exceeds the needs of other Wikimedia pages. Fans of Latuff have taken pains to upload some of his most offensive cartoons, that are useless in Wikimedia projects.

Undoubtedly, free shock art works should appear in Wikimedia Commons free of censorship, even if they offend most of their viewers. Setting up galleries for Antisemitic works disguised as shock art and blending them in galleries of their victims does not serve Wikimedia, and is not tolerated in any other Wikimedia project. The exhibition halls of Wikimedia Commons are being blatantly used to promote the works of Carlos Latuff, abusing the high ranking of Wikimedia by search engines such as Google.

As Erik Möller has envisioned four years ago: "People will upload all sorts of things which we don't want. We can fix that the same way we deal with Wikipedia articles we don't want." Racist exhibitions are not wanted in Wikimedia, thus they should be dealt with in Wikimedia Commons. Like David Shay, a Bureaucrat on the Hebrew Wikipedia, I think this slippery slope might lead to Commons being flooded by hateful political slogans [1]. I'm disappointed to see my puny works presented alongside with racist galleries.

אכיפת מדיניות ויקימדיה בוויקישיתוף

מיזם ויקישיתוף הוקם במטרה לאגד יחדיו קבצי מדיה חופשיים, בהם ניתן יהיה לעשות שימוש בכל מיזמי קרן ויקימדיה, מבלי להעלות את הקובץ לשרת של אותו מיזם. מאז הוקם קיבל על עצמו המיזם יעדים נוספים והתאכלס בפעילים עם השקפות עולם עצמאיות. כך למשל, המדיניות לפיה "קבצים שהועלו לוויקישיתוף צריכים להיות שימושיים לאיזשהוא מיזם ויקימדיה" מפורשת בפועל כ-"קבצים שהועלו לוויקישיתוף צריכים להיות שימושיים איכשהוא מתישהוא, גם אם לעולם לא יופיעו בכל מקום אחר פרט לגלריות בוויקישיתוף". פרשנות מקלה זו נאה בעיניי כל עוד אינה עומדת בסתירה לעקרונות אחרים הנאכפים בשאר מיזמי ויקימדיה.

בחודשים האחרונים הועלה לוויקישיתוף מבחר רחב של איורים חופשיים מפרי עטו של קרלוס לטוף. חלקם מפויסים, חלקם מבודחים, חלקם זועפים, חלקם גזעניים ומקצתם אנטישמיים בגלוי. חלק מיצירותיו משולבות בוויקיפדיה ורובן מצויות בוויקישיתוף בלבד, רק כי אין מספיק מקום בשבילן במיזמי ויקימדיה האחרים. מעריציו של לטוף טרחו והעלו לוויקישיתוף גם כמה מיצירותיו הפוגעניות ביותר, שאין להן כרגע כל שימוש במיזמי ויקימדיה.

אין ספק כי יצירות אמנות זעזוע (אנ) חופשיות ראויות להופיע במיזם ויקישיתוף ללא צנזורה, גם אם הן פוגעות במרבית צופיהן. העמדת גלריות ליצירות אנטישמיות במסווה של אמנות זעזוע ושילובן בגלריות של מושאיהן אינה משרתת את מטרות קרן ויקימדיה ולא היתה מתקבלת בכל מיזם ויקימדי אחר. אולמות התצוגה של ויקישיתוף מנוצלים בבוטות לקידום יצירתו של קרלוס לטוף במנועי החיפוש השונים. אני שותף לדעתו של דוד שי כי מדובר במדרון חלקלק שמאפשר להפוך את ויקישיתוף לאתר שנאה שיוצף באינספור מסרים פוליטים. אני שותף לדעתו של חן כי עמותת ויקימדיה ישראל צריכה לפעול לאכיפת מדיניות קרן ויקימדיה במיזם ויקישיתוף.
