This is just brainstorming for possible POTY exhibition.

Idea

Result may look like this

Ideal is simple, to materialize POTY into real world traveling exhibition

Concept of Exhibition

Pictures printed on panels with captions. Preferably held on free accessible open space than in gallery. May have two forms:

• decentralized - centrally created only design and content of main panels, all printed locally and then sold or touring locally
• centralized - centrally also higher quality prints, locally only local language captions, prints touring itself

Number of pictures

• medalists + category winners + your picture
• all finalists
• anything between

Captions

• short captions from description page in English and local language
• long captions using text from wikipedia article more corresponding with the subject of picture. Sometime may be hard to select, also local language versions may not exists. But it may promote also wikipedia (with text on end like: "See error? Fix it on (address of article)

Other content

• foreword - about Commons and Wikimedia (possibly also about local WM chapter and wikipedia)
• presentation of partners and sponsors
• texts of licenses
• your picture - blank picture with text like: "There can be your picture on the next year!" and short description of Commons uploading, FP and POTY process.

Supporting material

postcards, prints of pictures, offline versions on CD/DVD...

• some amount for free
• being sold - may generate profit (of loss), lot of complications
• none

People and partners

• Idea alone needs its people, i am not sure about my time commitment and language skills (en-2).
• Local volunteer(s) for each place
• Foundation or its local chapter
• Other local/global sponsors/partners (for profit or non-profit)

Money

Last but not least. Minimal budget??

Expenses

most of them local, some can be avoided

• (preparation of graphical design of panels)
• (some missing translations to local languages)
• alone prints of pictures alone (normal or high quality)
• prints of local captions
• rent for panels
• rent for place for panels
• (security service - mainly in case of hq prints or complicated security situation)
• (opening session expenses)
• (supportive materials expenses)
• (more PR)
• (legal services)

Sources

• ask a grant from Foundation.
  • single Local chapter must cover exhibition
  • the deadline for 2010-11 requests is June 1, 2010. Grants submitted past the deadline are considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • the minimum amount a chapter can ask for is USD 500. There is no set maximum... most requests will not exceed USD 25,000.
• ask Local chapter - less administration, less money
• ask some sponsors - global (for whole tour) or local - camera manufacturers, hw or sw companies, ISPs...
