These images were taken during a nearly 700-mile drive through southeast Kansas on July 2–4, 2006.

Big Brutus edit

“Big Brutus” was the second largest shovel of its type in operation from 1963 until 1974. It is located near the small city of West Mineral in Cherokee County.

Parsons edit

Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Kansas opened on June 1, 1872. The Grand Army of the Republic, Antietam Post No. 64 was organized on June 2, 1882 by Civil War Veterans living in Parsons. Lots were purchased in May of 1886 for Circle No. 1 and in 1889 for Circle No. 2.

Circle No. 1 Two 8-inch, 9,250-pound Columbiad cannons were gifted by the war department and placed in 1898. The 28-foot tall concrete rotunda was constructed in 1905.	Circle No. 2 The cast iron archway was erected in 1913 and donated by the Ladies of the G.A.R.

The bronze statues were added to Circle No. 2 in 1911. They were made by the W.H. Mullens Company of Salem, Ohio.

Owego edit

These images were taken in Oswego in Labette County.

A mural seen from the intersection of 4th and Commercial streets. A reproduction of E. Marie Horner's “The Village of White Hair”, it was painted by Joan Allen, with Larry Allen and Jerg Frogley. The mural depicts the relationship between John Mathews, a white fur trader and blacksmith who lived on the summit, and the Osage, led by Chief White Hair, who dwelled east of the bluff near Horseshoe Lake, circa 1841. The original painting is exhibited in the Oswego Historical Museum, and the mural was sponsored by the Oswego Historical Society.

Tri-state markers edit

Old and new tri-state markers at the meeting of the Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri borders. The original stone monument was built in 1938 by the Youth Work Administration. The new monument was placed in October 2004 and lies several feet east of the old monument.
