Hello, 14nu5!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

PortraitsEdit

Hi 14nu5,
why do you think that File:Portrait dilong-rudolf.jpg is already PD? This image is >70 years old, but to be PD, the photographer must be dead since >70 years. --Túrelio (talk) 20:21, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Same for File:Portrait ciger-hronsky-jozef.jpg. Were these portraits really all taken on December 31, 1937? --Túrelio (talk) 20:22, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, this photos are parts of a serie of 46 pictures (http://search.slu.cas.cz/ and issue with original name „Fotografie slovenských spisovateľov“ – Pictures of Slovak Writers; also record http://books.google.com/books?id=2PduNAAACAAJ&dq=Fotografie+slovensk%C3%BDch+spisovate%C4%BEov&hl=sk&ei=jsYYTOCnFJOisQbPi4HSCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA), which have been published in the year 1937 (no day or month, i have choosen the latest one), and i'd like to upload them here now. Originals are in my possesion. The pictures are a little older than the serie i think, by logic, no evidence. There is also no evidence of any photographer on published cards or cover. This pictures are many years in use as public domain in Slovakia. I already consulted this case with colegues on Slovak Wikipedia. —   14nu5  20:42, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Ok, but you should check with your colleagues and/or search by yourself, whether the single images have been published elsewhere (other than the cited book) and/or earlier and, if yes, whether there was an author/photographer name mentioned. If that is not the case, then you should check what are the legal rules in Slovakia for anonymous works (when a work has to be considered anonymous and after what time of publication/creation/? it is considered to be PD). --Túrelio (talk) 21:45, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Fine. Some researches have been done. I think there is very little possibility to discover one photographer’s name. By some characteristics of pohotos (different quality, light, damage), as I checked that out while scan cleaning, this people had brought their own private photos to publisher, and he just made graphic addjustments. But this is just my supposition. Thank you for time. —   14nu5  22:01, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
