Maginot MapsEdit

Thank you for your warning! You are right, the selected license was not correct. The license must be CC-by-nc-nd to fit with cartomaginot.org.
I hope you will agree with me... In that case, I will modify all licenses Borvan53 (talk) 23:36, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
PS: what do you wish to do on the Maginot Line? Perhaps we could help each other?

From what I see, ND or NC licenses are not acceptable on Commons, so I'm not sure that changing the license will work.
I've been working on a series of articles on wiki-en on the Maginot ouvrages; additions or improvements would be welcome. More pictures, and especially diagrams and maps, but so far I haven't found any that are freely usable, and haven't the time to make my own. Acroterion (talk) 02:58, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
I am discussing with the webmaster about this point. I already have his aknowledgement to use the maps on wikipédia (see the forum). The CC-by-nc-nd licence deals with the DWG files. I am now discussing about the use of screen captures of these maps. Borvan53 (talk) 12:06, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
The webmaster clearly confirmed that screen captures of the maps, as I did them, can be freely used on Wikipedia. The CC-by-nc-nd licence protects only the DWG files. You can check it on the forum of cartomaginot.org (discussion entitledwikipedia between jeannot -it's me- and the webmaster).
Borvan53 (talk) 20:23, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Excellent; I'm glad you were able to get that cleared up directly with the webmaster. It was obviously their intention to make it freely available in some form, and now we have the technicalities out of the way and can use the captures you've provided. Thanks for all you help! Acroterion (talk) 19:52, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
In reading the conversation at cartomaginot.com, it appears that the webmaster is referring to French Wikipedia standards; they appear to be correctly quoting the Wikimedia policy on project-related standards. Commons has more stringent standards, as that text notes, and what would be acceptable on the French Wikipedia is not necessarily on Commons. It appears that the webmaster is not distinguishing between the French Wikipedia and Commons. See [[1]]. Acroterion (talk) 00:42, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing imagesEdit

Hello, Acroterion!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Noisy picturesEdit

Hi there Acroterion! You're welcome! Such a nice pic shouldn't lose the nomination because of an easy to fix problem. Well, first of all using low ISO speeds could help, just in case you already don't. But in pos-processing there are several methods that can be used. [2] This link explains really good the various methods one could use. I sometimes use the Camera Raw option to reduce noise in Photoshop. But when it is too messy, like in the picture of yours, no offense haha, I use the program NeatImage. Of what I've heard and of my experience it's the best way to reduce noise without affecting the image so drastically, you can see the results ;) Hey and nice picture, I would someday like to visit Yellowstone, it looks incredible! --Gaendalf (talk) 03:51, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, I've seen Neatimage; I'll give it a try. The image was shot at ISO 200, which shouldn't be a problem, but it apparently is for this particular camera. I ran it through Camera Raw, so the fault is with the sensor rather than the processing. I highly recommend Yellowstone, although it was quite crowded last September. I've installed NeatImage and have been cleaning up a few files that might be suitable for QI and FP. It definitely helps. Acroterion (talk) 03:44, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

FP PromotionEdit

Sawtooth Valley ID1.jpg

Your photo Sawtooth Valley ID1.jpg is now a featured picture. I nominated this photo because I think it is an excellent quality image that represents a place, Galena Summit, where many people first see the Sawtooths and it goes well with the recent improvements I have made to Wikipedia:Sawtooth National Forest. Thanks for uploading the picture. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 21:26, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for nominating it! I had no idea it was at FP. For my part, it was the first time I'd laid eyes on the Sawtooth Valley; I was deeply impressed. Acroterion (talk) 22:35, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
I also listed File:Sawtooth Range ID1.jpg as a quality image candidate, but there was objection over a dust spot in the upper left of the photo. If you're interested, I'm sure it would be promoted if you could remove this spot. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 02:08, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll fix it once the power is back and I can use Photoshop on the main computer again: we had a series of severe thunderstorms last night and we're on generator power. My present camera has some dust on the sensor that I can usually work around: I'm going to order a new camera next week, then clean the sensor on the old camera. Acroterion (talk) 02:39, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Brow Monument NRHP documentationEdit

thanks for the compliment - i feel like some old guy who started out the race and by the end, about 50 other people were carrying me over the finish line. this is an interesting process, to say the least. I packed up all of the correspondence regarding the NR pdfs and sent it to the person you suggested. i truly appreciate your help. (and everyone's) bpolkAbearfellow (talk) 20:26, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

You're completely welcome. Ideally, that's how it should work: somebody starts something worthwhile and others pitch in to help. After all, the interface and environment aren't exactly easy to master ... If you have any questions, let me know (you're more likely to get a fast response on Wikipedia page rather than here). Picture of the Year voting round 1 openEdit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
