They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Question: Why are many of the files in the Bergman category tagged with a CC license, sometimes in addition to the GNU license? Nageh (talk) 00:20, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. The guys (including me) simply dont know what license to put in in the upload process (there are schematic lists). They choose one of the CC licenses. I then replace it afterwords with the Licenses in the George Bergman Category. There are three kinds of Oberwolfach pictures, the ones from Bergman and the pictures with Copyright MFO have all a suitable license, for the others you have to ask for permission. The pictures with Copyright MFO have a german sharealike CC license (cc-by-sa-2.0-de) (see for example the picture of Ingo Lieb or Oberwolfach License Information)--Claude J (talk) 07:34, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I have fixed the licensing information now according to the information displayed in Category:Pictures_from_Oberwolfach_Photo_Collection_(Bergman). Hope that is alright now. Nageh (talk) 09:09, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Category:Paul_Lorenzen

Hi Baroc, I noticed hat you have created Category:Paul Lorenzen - I have added many more categories and interwikis. Before creating a category it is useful to call the Categorizing tool CommonSense which already suggests some Commonscategories - works best for images which are in use in a Wikipedia. However, it works best if the category at Commons is not created already so it needs to me called before. ;-) Just a tip. Ciao --Saibo (Δ) 03:17, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Unless the Flickr user changes the license to one that Wikimedia Commons accepts, the file will be speedily deleted. Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change has information about sending the Flickr user an appeal asking for the license to be changed. Only Flickr images tagged as (CC BY), (CC BY-SA), (CC0) and (PDM) are allowed on Wikimedia Commons. Once the license on Flickr is changed, you may replace the {{Unfree Flickr file}} tag with {{Flickrreview}} so that an administrator or reviewer can review the image again.
