Hello, Chzz!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Kimono-obi-2.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

I found the original file on Flickr and corrected the source. This file will not be deleted, since all the necessary information is now present. However, it would make it easier for everyone if you could make sure that you include the correct link next time you upload from Flickr. If you need any help or have any questions, feel free to ask! Cheers, Pruneautalk 14:11, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for picking that up; I must've made a typo when uploading that one; the others I uploaded at the same time seemed ok.
Glad you spotted it; I don't check this talk page often as I'm mainly just on en. If you know of any way of getting around that problem - e.g. getting bot notices posted to en instead of here, please let me know. --  Chzz  ►  05:10, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File needs renaming edit

The file "Marco polo sheep line drawing.jpg" needs renaming. It isn't a "line drawing". It's an engraving. Black and white pics like this from old books are always engravings (or etchings or some such) They are printed from an engraved plate, usually metal but sometimes wood or stone (which give different effects). The engraving might be manual using sharp tools, or etched using acid. They are always referred to a "prints" rather than drawings.

I don't know quite how you go about renaming a pic. Maybe you can work it out. If not, press the help button and yell loudly. Someone will eventually come.

File:David Tennant 2.jpg edit

Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
File:David Tennant 2.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid. Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

Flickr reviewer edit

Hello Chzz, and thank you for your application to be a Flickr reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. Congratulations! Please see Commons:Flickr images if you haven't done so already, and the backlogs at Category:Flickr images needing human review and Category:Flickr review needed. A helpful script for easy-tagging flickr images is at importScript('User:Patstuart/Flickrreview.js'); (which you can add to your monobook.js), and you can add User reviewer or User trusted to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your work on Commons! Blurpeace 22:51, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:BLAIRPEDIAn.png edit

File:BLAIRPEDIAn.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Jim-Lemley-pic-1.jpg‎ edit

Hi, per your note diff, I'll follow up with the uploader later today. AGF only goes so far, especially considering his/her lengthy (possibly time-wasting) discussion on the related article talk page, so I would welcome this file being deleted and the uploader formally advised if nothing is seen by email in the next 24 hours or so. Thanks, (talk) 20:08, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Agree. The entire debate sounds to me like they do not actually understand our policies on non-free images, and copyright. The other image is of dubious origin too, but yes...we need to see what any possible OTRS mail says; I noticed that it said "OK for use on Wikipedia" though, which does not bode well.  Chzz  ►  04:35, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Files you uploaded may be deleted edit

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commons wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. File:Japan Earthquake.jpg edit

Hello! I've deleted this image. For an explanation of why, please see this discussion. Also note that the actual source is linked from the Flickr description. Thanks! —David Levy 23:43, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Did I upload that?
If I did...how come I used such a poor filename?
I cannot see that flickr link - I am unable to log in to flickr. Was the info about the 'actual source' there when I uploaded it? Did I miss it?
I'm sure, if I did upload it, I would have checked for the existence of other copies on the net, with tineye etc.
As I cannot see the deleted file, can you try to help clarify what happened? Thanks,  Chzz  ►  23:13, 13 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
1. You prepared an upload using Flickr upload bot on 11 March at 09:44 (UTC). The following information is contained in the revision:
Description 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami refinery fire
Date
Source Flickr: Japan Earthquake
Author Danny Choo
Permission
(Reusing this file)

I just noticed that this actually pertains to File:2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami refinery fire.jpg (the image discussed in the Wikipedia thread linked above), but it somehow ended up in the revision history of File:Japan Earthquake.jpg (a different copyright violation from the same Flickr stream, prepared for upload by a different user).
2. The actual source was (and is) merely linked, not clearly defined. Contradictory information attributing the photograph to Danny Choo was automatically included in the description when he uploaded it. So there was no obvious reason for you to realize that the image was improperly licensed.
3. TinEye has not yet indexed the image.
4. Also note that I contacted Danny Choo, who retained the images but agreed to remove the misleading CC copyright tags.
I hope that I've clarified the situation. If you have any further questions, please let me know.  :) —David Levy 17:29, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ah, thank you so much, David Levy. Nice and clear. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't done something really stupid - or at least, if I had, I wanted to know what, so I wouldn't make the same mistake again. Great stuff, thanks again.  Chzz  ►  02:30, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

American Samoa markers edit

Those highways don't exist, they're not proposed to exist and they've never existed before. There are 3 markers File:American_Samoa_Highway_001.svg, File:American_Samoa_Highway_005.svg and File:American_Samoa_Highway_006.svg that are correct, whereas all of these are incorrect renderings of highways removed from the Italian Wikipedia as hoaxes. Imzadi 1979  03:06, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please forgive what may appear pedantic, but...I simply cannot see or think of a reason for deletion.
Commons contains many many imagines of "Things that do not exist".
As I said in the discussion - what I was looking for was, an answer to "Why delete" - we are not short of disk space.
Thanks,  Chzz  ►  03:16, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
The appearance of markers for non-existant highways has caused problems in the past. Namely, we get "if Commons has a marker for it, it must exist or have existed before!" and then they're added inappropriately to articles. There are only three highways on the main island of American Samoa and no documented plans to add more. It's not a matter of disk space, it's a matter of accuracy. This isn't a graphic of a unicorn (non-existant) that's known to be mythical, it's a graphic of something that looks like it could, but doesn't, exist. Imzadi 1979  03:21, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah, it if has been used to cause disruption, OK - that becomes a potential reason for deletion. It is annoying though, if people are so silly that because such a sign exists they see that as proof that the thing exists. I mean...we do also have pictures of things that look like they could exist (but don't) - of course.  Chzz  ►  03:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
(at this stage, I'm kinda hoping other people will contribute to the deletion discussion. Or, maybe it'll help if you show the examples of disruption in there)  Chzz  ►  09:56, 16 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The images were deleted, e.g. Commons:Deletion requests/File:American Samoa Highway 007.svg.  Chzz  ►  13:13, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
