Burnley

Ummm,

Slight issue and a question?

• "Ightenhill is a civil parish, and a district of Burnley"
• If I move something from Burnley to Transport in Burnley, how will almost everyone ever find it?

I'm not sure if this is one question or two.

• If your question is why did I did I remove Category:Burnley from Category:Ightenhill that's because it's already in Category:Borough of Burnley so there's no need for it to be in both unless there's some special reason.
• As for Category:Transport in Burnley it's not clear whether it refers to the town or the borough. I am assuming it refers to the borough and if that is true then you might need to put something in that category and in Category:Burnley. On the other hand, if it refers only to the town, then it can be recategorised under Burnley but we might need a new category for Transport in the Borough of Burnley or Transport in Burnley (borough). (Even in the first case, it might be better to rename the category to remove the confusion.) It's a bit of a mess and I've no strong feelings either way. I spend most of my time on Wikipedia, apart from the last few days, I’ve not done much on here, so I don’t have an answer myself, but here’s a few observations and questions:

• My motivation of getting involved with categories, is the size of Burnley since the geograph upload. I feel new subcategories need to be created and files moved to them.
• I also like the Wikipedia Commons category template and feel that this would be the way most people would enter the commons. So far I’ve created Coal Clough Wind Farm, Weavers’ Triangle and Burnley Bus Station and linked to them from the articles.
• I’ve created and populated Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Burnley, but have included about 10 images from Hapton.
• I created Transport in Burnley with a view putting “Roads in Burnley”, and all the railway and bus images in it.
• From the content of the images, I think that “Pubs in Burnley”, “Places of worship in Burnley” (It would seem that “Churches in Burnley” would the usual choice), “Shops in Burnley” and “Textile mills in Burnley” could all be created.
• The en:Burnley gets about 10x the views of en:Burnley (borough), so I think most people will come to the Burnley category and navigating to parent categories is not immediately obvious (with this in mind I added the also template today).
• I think that Railway stations in Burnley is pointless and is the only such cat in Railway stations in Lancashire
• Re: Ightenhill, It’s a difficult to categorise, nearly all of the populated part of the parish would be considered to be part of the town. And the district of Burnley called Ightenhill extends further into the town the borders of the parish. But it would seem that putting it both cats would be frowned at?

Derivative Work of Scotland Administrative Map 1947.png

Hi, I noticed you registered three derivative works from my map Scotland 1947 Admin Map. As your maps are of contemporary Scottish administration perhaps you meant to register them as a derivative of Scotland 2009 Admin Map instead? XrysD (talk) 13:01, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Actually no, because I was not getting the boundaries for the council areas but for the NUTS regions, some of which are based on the old counties instead, particularly in the Highland area (UKM61, UKM62, UKM63, UKM31). I used File:Scottish council areas 2011.svg instead for the council areas, which is in SVG format and much easier for me to reuse. Best wishes. -- Dr Greg  talk  19:08, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

You are free to use any of my maps as long as you comply with the licensing terms displayed on each map's description page. This means you need to credit me as the author (Dr Greg at Wikimedia Commons) and state the name of the licence (typically CC BY-SA 3.0). Ideally you should provide a link to the relevant file description page on this site and to the licence (e.g. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en), if it is technically practicable to do so. There is more information at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.

Pendle Hill picture

Hi there,

I have seen a baeutiful picture that you have taken of Pendle Hill with Longridge Fell in the foreground. I used to live in Langho & went to school in Cllitheroe. Many years later I now live in Surrey & am moving to a house in West sussex. The old gent that we are buying from is 91 years old and from Whalley! He has a picture of Pendle & said, "if you buy this house, I'll leave that here for you!". He's moving into a retirement home.

Thing is, I would really like to give him a print of your picture as a card or small picture - to pass on the good kama & all that.

How do I get hold of en electronic copy of this picture? Is there a way that I can lift it from wikipedia or are you able & willing to e-mail me a copy? I'm not very flash with my pc knowledge so the simpler the better for me.

I hope you don't mind me asking but I just don't seem to have seen anything else that I like quite as much.

Yes, you can download a copy (like all other photos on Wikipedia Commons). Just go to the page File:Pendle Hill above mist 235-0004.jpg, click on "Download" above the picture, and right-click over "Full resolution" at the bottom of the pop-up window, and select the menu option that says something like "Save link as..." or "Save target as...", depending on your browser. You can then save the photo to your own computer. To comply with licencing, you also need to copy the text under "Attribution", i.e.

Dr Greg [GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html) or CC BY 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

and include that (or something very similar) wherever you use the photo. For convenience you could also include the page link https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3APendle_Hill_above_mist_235-0004.jpg as well, but you are not required to do so. Further information at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.

County tops

Hi,

I came across File:English county tops map.svg earlier, I'd strongly suggest an alternate colour scheme as Red/Green should be avoided for obvious reasons. ColorBrewer allows selection of only safe palettes. I'd suggest that a sequential colour scheme (ie light to dark) would be more appropriate for that use.--Nilfanion (talk) 14:00, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Yes. Anyone can use this photo as long as they comply with the licensing terms at File:Preston bus station 232-26.jpg#Licensing -- i.e. attribute it to "Dr Greg on Wikimedia Commons" and state that the photo is released under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported licence. On a website it's sufficient to supply a link to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Preston_bus_station_232-26.jpg . If you click on "Use this file" above the photo on its description page, you'll get suggested attribution code to add to a website. Map of Milnrow?

Hello Dr Greg. I'm working on improving the Milnrow Wikipedia article. It would really benefit from a map not unlike the svg maps you've done for places like Lytham St Annes and Skelmersdale.

Would you be interested?

Milnrow takes in quite a large area, from Windy Hill through to the Rochdale canal, and encompasses villages and farmland too. It has boundary markers at the old pre-1974 Milnrow Council boundaries, and was wondering if you'd include a dashed line or something to this effect so it can be explained the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by William Whittaker (talk • contribs) 07:27, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Electoral wards in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale

Does the area you want to cover coincide with the "Milnrow & Newhey" electoral ward in the southeast corner of Rochdale Borough in this existing ward map? -- Dr Greg  talk  12:34, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

The map I propose would be extracted from https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/53.6099/-2.0756 with some features removed, recoloured to the same colours as my other maps and with the ward boundary added. Does that look like what you want?

I found a map of the old Milnrow Urban District boundaries at http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10054874/boundary . They differ somewhat from the modern ward boundaries, but still similar, so I suggest it would be more appropriate to show the modern ward boundary rather than the historical UDC boundary. Hi there, I have been recommended to you by another user. Is there any chance you could produce a location map of the Borough of Doncaster like the one you produced for Burnley? Pendle Hill Photo

Hello,

I am working on a rock climbing guidebook to Northern England. I would like to use your image of Pendle Hill from Wikimedia as a small illustration. there will be no edits to it, it will be used as-is. Can you confirm that is OK. And if so, what credit I should label the image with please?
