Dear reader, I have not logged into this account for quite a few years. Imagine my surprise when I noticed several of my images were flagged and/or deleted, even though it is expressly stated that I was the photographer. What am I missing? Please feel free to enlighten me (truly, I don't mean that sarcastically) below this collapsed space. Thanks! ElC (talk) (El_C at en) 18:21, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

"Tame animals"? edit

It's done, I created the category "Tame animals" and linked it to "Animals" and "Pets" (where it will be easier to find.) I categorized some other pictures, which are very nice and interesting. By the way,"Petting" doesn't seem to me the right category for your gallery, perhaps it would be better to put it in Tame animals? Sincerely yours. Vassil 13:10, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, and glad you like! Again, I don't think "Pets" make much sense since these are wild animals, not pets. As for petting, it is acually defined as "1. The act of stroking or fondling an animal. [and only then does it go on to say:] 2. The act of kissing, stroking, etc., a person in a sexual manner." Thus, I feel very strongly about the user page remaining in the petting category, and if it wasn't for laziness on my part, I would add that catgeory to every single petting-related image I uploaded (which is likely over 50 percent of em). So, I'm interested in your thoughts on these two issues and hope that clears things up on my end. Thanks again for all your efforts; much appreciated. Best, ElC 20:57, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I apologize, I'm late to answer but I was rather busy last week.I removed the link from "Tame animals" to "Pets" as you wanted.Concerning the category for your gallery, it was a mere suggestion, it depends entirely on your choice.Sincerely yours. Vassil 10:32, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Private image collections and the like are generally not wanted. Wikimedia Commons is not a web host for e.g. private party photos, self-created artwork without educational purpose and such. There are plenty of other projects in the Internet you can use for such a purpose, like Flickr and others. However, uploading images of yourself and others in small quantity is allowed as long they are useful for some Wikimedia project (for example, a Wikipedia article, a Wikinews report, a meta article, a user page).

If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding. Cecil 20:00, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your gallery edit

Image deletion warning Your gallery has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.

Deletion request, how to proceed edit

I've just argued for keep pr the general request of deleting some of your images. I'm sorry that this process/discussion seem to have gotten out of hand, and that you have had a negative experience in this. From the sideline it seems to me that this is mainly due to miscommunication between you and Cecil, and I do hope it's possible to put that behind us and move forward. Please assume good faith when judging the steps Cecil has taken here.

Your images are indeed a valuable contribution to Commons and wikimedia proojects which use images from here. I am still concerned that many of these images seem very similar, and that the very number of images of varying quality might lead to that the best and most useful images are "lost" (so to speak). I still think it would be useful if you could re-evaluate whether you really want all of these images on commons, or if it might be possible to sort out the best ones and leave out some of the others. I could provide suggestions to some images which seem redundant if you want me to. Finn Rindahl 12:06, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

By all means, I would value any suggestions you might be able to offer. I didn't realize server space was so lacking, though. That meta gallery is just for my own reference. Vasil has already categorized most of the images, so they appear in a gallery via the respective category. But if some are redundant, sure they can go. But, wow, what an ordeal to put me through. And assuming goodfaith works both ways. Cecil is too angry at me, though, so can he just recuse from this and do something else? (and what was wrong with Image:Hidden_squirrel.jpg that it was speedy deleted?) ElC 12:15, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think you can Cecil should try to avoid one another for awhile, and let things cool off. Indeed, you are a valuable contributor. Walter Siegmund (talk) 12:24, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thx. Agreed. I haven't uploaded images of the burrows where chipmunks live in the winter and where they store food. I'll do it now. ElC 12:37, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I thought we just agreed to let it cool off, as I would be willing to do. -- Cecil 12:38, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to delete the three new images, Wsiegmund. I think they offer something new, but if Cecil gives you a hard time, don't worry about it. ElC 12:42, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was gonna add some pics of geese and raccoons, but I guess I'll hold off on future contributions, since that is what's sought from me now. ElC 12:46, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

You should take into account that the files on commons are designated to illustrate an encyclopedia. Obviously, Image:Postjumpy.jpg, Image:Prejumpy.jpg, Image:Chipfriendship2.jpg and more are not covered by the Commons:Project scope. Your images should show the object, which is the animal. It should be sharp, centered and lighted. No wikimedia project I can think of could make use of something like Image:I'm being consumed by chipmuuunks!2.jpg or Image:Don't you -love- pants2.jpg. Regards, Code·is·poetry 12:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC) PS: read w:WP:GRIEFReply

The three new images uploaded today are valuable contributions and can stay in my opinion, I haven't really gotten around to view every old image though. I've made a copy of your user page gallery at User:Finnrind/Images of E1C, where my intention is to mark those images that in my opinion are significantly weaker than the others or redudant because they are more or less similar to others. It is a lot of images though, so this might take some time ;o)... As I have stated above, the aim with this is to make the best images easier accessible. There are no restrictions on new uploads from you, but please keep in mind that a stricter "self-evaluation" on what is within the scope of this project will ensure I higher overall quality and value of your contributions. Do take a look at Please link images as well, there are some useful hints on how to add categories. By letting things "cool off" I would think more of postphoning this discussion until we all have had a chance to think some more. Regards, Finn Rindahl 14:17, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
If you could take a look at User:Finnrind/Images of E1C at your convenience, I've had a (quick) lokk at the first 70 images and added short comments to some. I could look at the other 300+ as well, but would like feedback from you before doing that. It would be so much better if we could sort this out without having anyone nominating images for deletion again. Regards, Finn Rindahl 18:41, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Transformers, chipmunks in disguise!.jpg edit

Just noticed that you never got the message on your talk page. This picture is in the Unknown-Category since September 20th (this way I noticed your pictures). Please repair the description or it will be once again deleted any time now. -- Cecil 14:24, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hm, this image will be deleted any time now if source etc isn't added, even if it's pretty obvious that the source is the same as all the other pictures. On the other hand - this is a clear candidate for deletion (blurry, hand in the foreground etc) so I'm more tempted to just delete it instead of adding a source myself. Regards, Finn Rindahl 14:23, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

No hurry edit

Hi ElC, thanks for your message at my talk page. I'm answering you here to keep the "chippie-thread" in one place. First of all, I'm not User:Fingalo, I'm User:Finnrind signing as Finn Rindahl (which is my real name). I only just figured out that you're ElC and not E1C... ;o)

There's no hurry sorting out these images (in my opinion - others might feel differently), if we could look through some 50 a week I think that would be grand. I'll try to do something about the categories here though, so that they're better organised. We probably need to add subcategories like Category:Tame chipmunks (or whatever the latin name is) and so on, so that the images are accessible both via tame animals and via the specific animal, and at the same time not filling up the main categories completely. I'll look into that later today (I hope), bit busy IRL right now. Regards, Finn Rindahl 14:18, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I read EIC (Editor in Charge, a good username, if it isn't taken), rather than en:User:El_C. So there was confusion all around, I suppose. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 05:09, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, ElC!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

The specific reason several of your files were deleted was that they were deemed to be, in the deletion tagger's words, too blury to be realistically useful for an educational purpose, and therefore outside of Commons' project scope. (One specific image was flagged as lacking source information, and I have no idea what was being asked for, and it appears the rest of the Commons community doesn't either, as the tag was removed two weeks later).
