First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Dunaway Oscar

Hello! Eller hejsan! I am curious as to your edit and interest here. Do you have any particular info about this photo that would motivate your removal of Category:Faye Dunaway from the file page? Any reason to believe that it is not Dunaway's Academy Award in the photo? SergeWoodzing (talk) 20:28, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I didn't read the description. I just saw that she wasn't in the photo and removed the category. I thought perhaps it was cropped from a picture with her in it and that the categories had been copied. Entheta (talk) 00:04, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
If we can safely assume that that is her Oscar, shall we put the category back in, like we would if it was her house or her car? SergeWoodzing (talk) 08:45, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Well personally I expect to find pictures of the person in a category like that but I don't know what the policy is on things like that, so I'll leave it to you to decide. Entheta (talk) 14:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Dates

I noticed you created File:Barbara Eden Crop.jpg, which was a cropped version of File:Bob Hope Barbara Eden.jpg. The date that you put in the info box was the date you created this image, not the date that the original was taken (26 December 1987), possible leading people to think that it was a current image instead of a 22 year old image. I have corrected this. --rogerd (talk) 14:45, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Oh. Must be a bug in the DerivativeFX tool [1] because I didn't enter any date. Entheta (talk) 19:08, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

PNG images larger than 12 MegaPixels

Hi. I have uploaded a list of PNG priviews of world maps that I have prepared using publicly available data sets. I noticed that wikimedia blocks images >12 MegaPixels (it does not generate thumbs if an image is >12 MegaPixels). I have reduced the size and uploaded all maps using "Upload a new version of this file". My question is: will the original images that are in archive stay on the server for long time (e.g. >5 years)? I would like to have an URL that will not change because I plan to link to these files. Thanx

Yes, I believe the old versions of the files will be there. I'm not 100% certain though, but I think so. Entheta (talk) 12:34, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Monobook and Vector

Regarding the question from SVWP: I believe that it it not working because you put the script on the wrong js-page. Try putting it in the file made for the vector skin instead. // Sertion 05:38, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

It worked. Thanks. I'm clueless about things like this... ;) Entheta (talk) 07:34, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Some people spend their time building great articles and some spend their time learning how the (technical) system works. Luckily for us, Wikipedia attracts both types of people. :-) // Sertion 13:24, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Excellent post

Great post[2].

You might consider posting it to the foundation mailing list. Some there think that everything is all okay now because Jimmy pretended to give up 'virtually none' of his powers. See here if you think it wise. --Alecmconroy (talk) 14:53, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank you. Maybe I will, I 'll think about it. Entheta (talk) 15:07, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
