First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello Eustress/Archive 1,

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on the Wikimedia Commons. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on the Wikimedia Commons: "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how the Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:14, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Follow up edit

Hello and thank you for your OTRS assistance with images File:ILR NYC Extension.JPG, File:Dave Price ILR.JPG, and File:ILRschools6.jpg. I contacted the copyright holder again, who just submitted a more explicity free-use release to OTRS. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. —Eustress talk 15:23, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

If the more explicit release was sent under the same ticket number then it'll be routed to me and I'll deal with it soon. Otherwise, it goes to the end of the queue, which is currently 12 days long. Stifle (talk) 17:32, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cornell building categories edit

Hi- I was wondering why you've deleted several of the Cornell building-related categories I created. As far as I can tell, you never articulated a rationale for the changes anywhere, and in certain cases, I'm fairly sure your edits were against Commons policy for categories. I'd appreciate it if we could talk about this before you continue. —Notyourbroom (talk) 00:14, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough -- there might even be a better way to go about what I'm trying to accomplish. While the creation of building-specific categories was well-intentioned, it really hides a lot of good pictures that no one ever sees when browsing for pics of Cornell. A lot of the building-specific cats only house 1 or 2 pics--some 0. I'd like to pull them all into a more omnibus cat (CU buildings) so they can be seen and used more. For those buildings with a lot of pics (perhaps 7 or more), I wouldn't be opposed to keeping separate subcats for them. —Eustress talk 00:17, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm struggling to track this down now, but I recall reading a guideline that suggested that if at least two photographs exist of a particular unique subject, they ought to be consolidated into a category. (Perhaps this was later deleted, as I am having difficulty searching for it.) It is true that I had some categories which featured only one image, but that was with the intention of preemptively avoiding cluttering of the root "Cornell University buildings" category. As for that, I suppose we just differ in philosophy here- I am personally more inclined to have specific, streamlined categories for taxonomic purposes rather than omnibus categories for browsing purposes. Specifically, although many of the images have names in a standardized format (because I created and uploaded them), this is not an assumption we can make for the future: a category with dozens of images could easily have images of a given building scattered in multiple locations due to alphabetic sorting, making comparison difficult. —Notyourbroom (talk) 00:27, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Another note... If a building is on the NRHP, then I gave it its own category no matter what due to notability considerations. I think that this did include one case in which there was no actual photograph on commons for the building, but my memory is a bit rusty. —Notyourbroom (talk) 00:30, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I understand your logic and hope there is someway to accommodate both of our objectives. The best option I could think of was the omnibus cat because if, for example, someone is looking for a pic of Caldwell Hall, they can just conduct a Commons search (see here). I feel the building-specific cats are in most cases too narrow. Regarding NRHP, I'm not sure "honoring" them with a Cornell cat for being NRHP is appropriate--they receive an NRHP for that recognition.
In summary, my opinion is that visibility in this case trumps taxonomy. —Eustress talk 00:44, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'll defer to your judgement for now—perhaps this will be worth revisiting in the future if the category becomes unsustainably large. —Notyourbroom (talk) 01:32, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks... let's give it a try! —Eustress talk 02:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
