Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement edit

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Meta Categories edit

Hi Fleur-de-farine. Please, when you create a category by something (by city, by country, by century, by period, etc.) add at the top of the category the template of the metacat (e.g. {{metacat|city}}, {{metacat|country}}, {{metacat|century}}, {{metacat|period}}, etc.). It's important, because these are all metacategories, and the template put them automatically in the respective flat list, so after it's easier to make mantenance of these categories. You find all the flat lists here. Thank you very much. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 22:37, 17 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

More: if you have a metacat with two parameters (e.g. by subject by country) you have to give both parameters to the template (e.g. {{metacat|subject|country}}). Please, can you control all the categories that you have created, and add the correct template of metacat? Thank you very much! Cheers, --DenghiùComm (talk) 22:53, 17 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fleur-de-farine. Sorry if I disturb you again. First: thank you very much for your collaboration and corrections. Second: there is another problem: when you create categories with tho parameters, you must use the english sinthaxe and not that of the neo-latin languages. There is a difference of mentality and meaning. For latin speaking people "Baroque paintings by subject" are "paintings by style by subject" (the same order of the words), instead for the anglo-saxon mentality they are "paintings by by subject by style" (the reverse order). I think that you speak french; I speak italian. So we have the same problem with this reverse mentality. About 5 years ago all categories of Italy with two parameters was reverted in the anglo-saxon mentality order. Commons is a multilingual project, but the common language is english, so we are obliged to apply the anglo-saxon mentality / understanding for double categories. It's important that there is coherence with all other categories in the Commons system. So I changed in the reverse order 3 double categories that you have created ("Historical images by country by city", "Paintings by genre by subject", "Paintings by style by subject"). If you had create other double categories in the wrong order, please tell me and I will revert them. Thank you very much again. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 07:16, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Unicorns are fantasy creatures, so all media with unicorns can be seen as art edit

Hi Fleur-de-farine. I removed the Unicorns in art category and you seem to have undone this. Can you please explain to me why? --Judithcomm (talk) 21:29, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello @Judithcomm: ! Not all images in the category are related to art. There are some photos of toys, t-shirts, road signs and so on - so it's possible to separate it from paintings and objects of decorative art. Furthermore it will help to connect unicorns with categories of other animals in art. I'm going to do that a little bit later. Best regards, ~ Fleur-de-farine (talk) 16:38, 19 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

"Photographs of dance" and similar categories edit

Hello Fleur-de-farine. You never answered on my talk page so I'm reposting here. As you may recall, you asked me to not remove Category:Photographs of dance from files without a "really valid reason", which I believe I had already provided in the edit summary: "this is not a useful category: the vast majority of files in cat:dance are photographs".

I recognize the value of a category like videos of dance because it covers a small subset of dance-related files and a minority media type. However, the same cannot be said for Category:Photographs of dance because the great majority of dance files are photos, and consequently it seems pointless to even have such a category.

Please ask yourself this: How likely is it that someone will search for just photos of dance when photos are by far the predominant media type? (Answer: Not very likely). Please also consider this: Why are most dance photos not categorized as photographs of dance? (Answer: because it would be a monumental task to categorize hundreds of thousands of dance photos this way, and there seems to be no logical reason for doing so).

As things stand now there is little value in a category that purports to contain all dance photos when it actually covers only a tiny fraction of them. And even if you invested months of your time to complete this categorization, the fully-populated category would still have little value because it would largely overlap Category:Dance.

I hope you will reconsider this issue and, if you agree with my reasoning, consider deleting Category:Photographs of dance. Lambtron (talk) 18:38, 7 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

File renaming edit

Please do not insist: if a renaming request has been declined, there must be reasons for that and proposing the same thing doesn't help. See Commons:File renaming: if a file has already a meaningful name, let it be. --Ruthven (msg) 15:38, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Religious paintings in the Czech Republic by museum has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Chakrasana, Urdhva Dhanurasana are synonyms edit

Hi, not quite sure what your intentions are here, but these two names are synonyms for the same yoga pose. Would be best to have just one category for them. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:52, 30 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

I also more or less don't see any point to your category "Asanas by name"; all the Asana categories are in other categories like Standing asana, which in turn are in Asana, and that should really be sufficient. If you are sure that asanas are inadequately categorised in that way, then every asana would need to be in your new category (only 20 are today); I think the category would best be deleted really. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:55, 30 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to see no reply. I think we should empty out and delete the "Asanas by name" category as overlapping with the more structured hierarchy that already exists. I'll get on with it. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:24, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:LarionovPass.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. Categorization edit

Please do not change categorization, as you did with gates. --Orijentolog (talk) 13:29, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Explanation: If a specific category ends with "...by country" then you have list of countries (A: Armenia, B: Belgium, R: Russia, etc). If it ends with "...by century" then you have list of centuries. That's how thousands of categories are organized, and you tried to switch it, which is a mistake. --Orijentolog (talk) 14:57, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

You're not only one who got confused by it, I was doing the same mistakes a year ago. :) And then I had to correct it. :( Generally, it's easier to remember how it goes by ending: ...by country|Russia]], ...by city|Moscow]], ...by century|18]], and so on. Means, vertical line is like "=", country=Russia, city=Moscow, etc. If you see differently, for sure it's a mistake. Exceptions are by-by categories and secondary categories (those which have ...|*]], ...|!]], ...|+]]). If you want to see most complicated examples of by-by cats, try i.e. Category:Bridges by function by material by type. --Orijentolog (talk) 16:12, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oh, that's a real puzzle :) ~ Fleur-de-farine 16:36, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, so today's school homework would be: what's the difference between Category:Bridges by function by type by material by country and Category:Bridges by function by material by type by country? :) My God, I spent hours and I was opening tens of tabs, studying how one German guy organized bridges, and that's how I learnt categorization. Something like Russians with German rockets. :) Kindly advice: do not goo too much deep with categories, there are hundreds of countries, tens of centuries and functions, and when you multiply all, product can be time-consuming nightmare. --Orijentolog (talk) 16:46, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Agree. But same time categories may be really helpful :)) ~ Fleur-de-farine 14:57, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

FYI, I continued developing your idea of separating buildings from architecture, by century & by country, also architectural elements. Few notices:

I hope you like it, and if you have any objections, just say. :) --Orijentolog (talk) 13:10, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ещё про categorization, Category:Buildings on Prospekt Mira, Moscow и т.п. edit

Retired electrician (talk) 18:34, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Furthermore, renaming Churches by style by country by type to Religious buildings by country by style is totally wrong. Please do not make such things, you're making damage. --Orijentolog (talk) 14:54, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Furthermore, mausoleums are not religious buildings. Furthermore, it category ends with "by style" then it should have listed styles under alphabetic order, not functions. Furthermore, there is zero need to separate structures by style, it would require tens of thousands of edits, just to make unnecessary duplicates and deeper categorization. --Orijentolog (talk) 15:56, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Altes Rohr und Gebäude bei Rascafría II edit

Are you sure this was a residential building? There's a pipe leading to it (at the right). Maybe an old power station? GerritR (talk) 20:51, 14 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

You are right. I've corrected it to a more general cat. ~Fleur 07:33, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
