First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Categories edit

Why did you remove the categories here. It's okay to have duplicate files in the same categories, it is not, however okay to have duplicate files in the first place. If you think they are the same, you can nominate one of them (preferably the one with the more accurate name) for speedy deletion using . Thanks, Yonatan talk 00:37, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I apologize, I just realized there are in fact differences in the two images. Krimpet 15:14, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:I-476_signs_on_Ridge_Pike.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Fran Rogers, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net.

Heyya Krimpet. Pretty-please, could you possibly add the following line to Template:GFDL/lang in the usual place;

ga |

Thank you for commenting, however, because the license is sound, users of Wikimedia Commons should not make deletion requests in the village pump, and we should use the relevant process for it instead. Also, you said, "but these photos seem excessively gratuitous and seem like vanity material." I do not understand how an image like Image:Free Subtitles.PNG is either "overly gratuitous" or "vanity material". We use it in the articles for Subtitle (captioning) on both the English and Chinese Wikipedia. Please undelete the images, and follow deletion per Commons:Deltion requests to decide whether to delete the images or not because of their content, since license is no longer an issue. Hello Fran Rogers!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 06:06, 4 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

De-adminship warning edit

Deutsch | Español

Dear Fran Rogers. I am writing to you to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you

Adminship edit

Hello Krimpet,

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Fran Rogers, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Please help replace this outdated license edit

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Don't know if you saw this edit

Regarding this brief message,[1] Wikimedia Commons is a different website. Commons is not obligated to observe the local policies of the English Wikipedia. Durova (talk) 15:51, 13 January 2010 (UTC) This is sort of for the IP's benefit.Reply

Thanks Durova (I know, though I don't think Misty does). This discussion continued over on my enwiki talk: she first claimed it wasn't her, then that it was a "pastel drawing enhanced by Photoshop," obviously untrue. An oversighter here considered it serious enough that they contacted a developer to delete the image permanently (since oversighting of images seems to be broken). So, the image is gone forever. :) Fran Rogers (talk) 22:39, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, on the second thought it was worth appending a comment because otherwise it might appear like an attempt to lecture you on policy you already know. I've got no problem at all with your decision to act conservatively when the material has those types of unresolved questions regarding its legitimacy. We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine edit

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:21, 20 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletion spree edit

Hi, you deleted a file, although it had been kept, see Commons:Deletion requests/File:Rendered Handcuffed Nude Model.png. Please restore and start a new DR. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 06:30, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fran appears to have deleted a file that falls within commons speedy deletion criteria. I also ask that you take a look at [2]. I see no need for another DR to be opened. Tiptoety talk 06:34, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm not seeing an issue with this deletion especially given that it's clearly out of projects scope, and given the recent directive from the project's co-founder. To quote a later comment; "Existing policy can be enforced firmly and swiftly. Anyone doing so has my full support. Speedy deletion is an appropriate solution to a longstanding problem." - Alison 06:37, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Also, in case folks were wondering: most of what I'm deleting were mass uploads of images from Flickr, some of which are porn/erotica, most of which have a fetishistic theme, but all of which are just random pictures of people that don't serve an educational purpose. Commons needs to get back on track, and it starts today. Fran Rogers (talk) 06:40, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
You are deleting files that were in use, see en:Special:Contributions/CommonsDelinker. It goes against policy to delete such files as out of scope. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:15, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Then policy can and should be changed. Fran Rogers (talk) 07:17, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
(e/c)I am pretty sure that Jimbo mentioned something about him changing policy if it gets in the way. But anyhow, I never liked the "it's in use!!1" argument. I can easily delink the file myself, and no one would ever know it was in use. Killiondude (talk) 07:18, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Local editors that had the article on their watchlist would notice. What is happening here is that Fran Rogers does not wish to edit the articles on enwp, where he might be reverted. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:21, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, the thing about the "it's in use!!1" argument is that it's explicitly part of our policy: a file used in good faith outside userspace on another Wikimedia project cannot be considered out of scope due to lacking educational use. Anyway, it looks like Fran has already undeleted those files. --Ilmari Karonen (talk) 10:01, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was about to announce that; a few minutes ago I restored the files that were actually in use on a project, and reverted CommonsDelinker. I'll admit I should have deferred to existing policy in this case. Fran Rogers (talk) 10:12, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
In the meantime you just disregard policy? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:19, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think this is a prime example of ignoring the rules. Tiptoety talk 07:24, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
As Jimbo's word seems to be law (and the rest of the Board does not seem to matter at all), it may be useful to quote his opinion that "existing policies here on commons are sufficient to deal with the problem". /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 08:12, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
With regard to the board. Jimmy has already said the board will be making a comment in the next few days supporting cleaning up commons. Tiptoety talk 19:39, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I would also draw attention to what Jimbo has said. Jimbo has said "Existing policy can be enforced firmly and swiftly". Since existing policy says that an image legitimately in use on another WMF project is considered in scope, I hope no more images that are in use will be deleted with the incorrect suggestion as the deletion reason that they are beyond the project scope. Jimbo hasn't given the green light to ignore policies or the concerns of others about what is being done. Adambro (talk) 08:17, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree. Will you at least please stop deleting until we have formed consensus on this? Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 08:26, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Consensus has been clear for sometime now. Please read over COM:NUDE and COM:PORN. Tiptoety talk 19:25, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure I see why that's necessary. Stuff can be undeleted later. There has been endless talk and much derailing of efforts to move things forward by those blindly saying "Commons is not censored". True. But it has a scope. Getting things moving is goodness. Want to help? You can pick up the pace of working toward a good policy, that would be helpful. See what you can do about those who unreasoningly stand in the way of getting somewhere. ++Lar: t/c 14:14, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please restore File:Doggirl in her routine shower.jpg and File:Doggril tries to escape.jpg. The Commons is not censored and these images have not even been proposed for deletion. Always in the past when sexuality images have been proposed for deletion on grounds of scope, the deletion request has been overwhelmingly rejected. We get rid of surplus penis pictures because there are so many: that is not an excuse to censor other images. Both of these pictures were transferred from the Wikipedia, neither are "random" or "from Flickr", there are no personality or copyright issues and both are illustrative. This deletion spree has clearly degenerated into pure vandalism. --Simonxag (talk) 09:20, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Endorse Fran's actions. Pure vandalism is an over the top characterization. ++Lar: t/c 14:14, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Second the endorsement. Simonxag, things may have changed a bit, but we can still have a discussion about any images that are being deleted. Nothing is irreversible.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 19:28, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
we meaning moderators, as bypassing the 'nomination for deletion' excludes the majority of the community from offering input. Ty (talk) 05:32, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fran, I'd like to say that I think your actions were taken in good faith and I'm pleased you've reverted them in cases where they were clearly harming projects. When I made my criticisms I didn't fully know the context of Jimbo's ill considered intervention. I hope you don't get to be another admin demoralized by this sorry mess. --Simonxag (talk) 22:14, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Rendered Handcuffed Nude Model.png edit

Could you please clarify your reason for deleting File:Rendered Handcuffed Nude Model.png, which was mentioned at Commons:Village pump#Cleanup policy. Note, please, that the article had survived a previous deletion request. Thank you, Black Falcon (talk) 18:48, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please see the threads above. This file meets commons criteria for speedy deletion. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 19:40, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have read Commons:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion, and "out of project scope" does not appear to be one of the criteria. I have also read Commons:Sexual content, and it does not appear that a CGI rendering of a partially-covered (by arms) nude female figure meets any of the five specified "categories of sexual content [that] are generally not allowed on Commons". Lastly, though the image obviously contains a depiction of nudity I must question whether its content is in any way sexual. I would appreciate a more detailed clarification. Thank you, Black Falcon (talk) 19:58, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Actually, outside project scope is a speedy deletion criteria. Take a look under the heading "A page can be deleted if it is:". Tiptoety talk 20:00, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
That is for pages. Not for files. You should not be an admin if you do not know the difference. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 20:02, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's actualy in scope as we don't have much in the way of images of virtual people (look at the ring no filter should do that). Hello Fran, why have you first deleted several images and undeleted them some hours later? Example: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=File:Wax_and_Pins_on_Nipples_edited-1.png

You have deleted quit tons of images. Apparently most of them you didn't undelete are not in current use in projects. But what's about the commonscat links in the wikipedia?! They are pretty useless now. It would be nice if you could clean up the mess by yourself and go through you deletions and undelete most of the images - they cannot be all of unusable quality. If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

About Union County College drawing edit

I noticed you deleted File:Union County College Police.jpg. There is a backstory to this whole episode which you might check out this thread here. Essentially I had been trying to take pictures of the college to improve the article about Union County College. I was detained by campus police for half an hour who told me "No pictures were allowed". They did not take my camera. But I had the sense that if I tried to keep taking pictures, they would arrest me or kick me off campus. I asked the officer if I could take his picture: he looked like he would arrest me if I tried. But I asked: but drawings are okay? He said, "sure, drawings are okay, but NO PICTURES". So, I'm doing a drawing. I hope you will reconsider your decision in this light.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 12:55, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

On second thought, ignore the above. I read through peoples comments on the ANI fully, and I agree -- let's not restore this drawing -- it's me being childish (and wanting to strike back after being detained) but it makes all of us look bad. But there are better ways to deal with this.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 13:38, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Joe Sestak Congressional Photo.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Joe Sestak Congressional Photo.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
