Whoops

Yes you are an admin but are you sure this was a good idea [1]? On Commons we store free images - we do not decide which version other wikies should use. The original now has a mark that usage has been universally replaced and that could get an admin to delete the image because these images is in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. Oh, didn't know it came up for speedy deletion automatically. Or maybe I forgot it, haven't used the admin tools so frequently the past few months since my PC has been broken. I'd had removed the tag if you hadn't, and will do so from now on if the images aren't duplicates. FunkMonk (talk) 13:03, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

File Upload Problems

Hi Funk! Just a quick question. I have been trying to upload a new version of File:Gallimimus Steveoc86.jpg but every time I try I get a warning saying 'A file with this name exists already in the shared file repository'. I just tryed and I get the message "A file with this name already exists; please check File:Gallimimus Steveoc86.jpg if you are not sure whether you want to change it." and then I can choose "Ignore warning and save file anyway" or to "Return to upload form and choose a differend name". Thanks MGA for trying. I just tried again and I still got the message. A file with this name exists already in the shared file repository. If you still want to upload your file, please go back and use a new name.' and a box with File:$1 in it appears. I have had this problem since Yesterday. There is no option to override. Hi! I'm sorry I didn't see this, because I haven't had Internet access during the weekend. I haven't heard about that error before, so either you could ask at the helpdesk[2], or you could upload the file under a different name, and then I could delete the old version and rename the new one to the old name or somehting. The description of item, visible in the museum, not in the photo (which display only a short label), unless do you want me to ask to the paleontologist of museum if he is sure about the classification of that specific fossil (a gift from somebody from Argentinian if I remember well). Or you are an experts of Argentinian mammalian fossils and you are observed in the photos some anatomic features that lead you to judge about an erroneous classification. In such case I would like to know your observation and I'll pass your comment to the responsible of paleontological section of the museum.--Bramfab (talk) 07:13, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

1. Please do not move images from Wikipedia which have already been moved to Commons.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Fossil cats

Hi FunkMonk, If you have time would you be willing to go through the Fossils discussion on ToL and summarize the "retain separate extinct and fossil cats" position for User:Tiptoey? At this point the only summary has been provided by Snek01. I have trouble simplifying my thought to non-scientific minds and so don't feel I would do an adequate job. Tuojiangosaurus

Hi FunkMonk, are you sure that the skeleton on that picture is a Tuojiangosaurus? Please answer. DenesFeri

Yes, we have other images of that exact skeleton too, and they only have Tuojiangosaurus in the British Museum, You can also see on the spikes that it is not Stegosaurus, since they are triangular, whereas Stegosaurus has pentagonal spikes. FunkMonk (talk) 14:50, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Well alright, but the moa image wasn't a crop made by anyone here, I found the image in that size and bad resolution, thought it ws the original, and uploaded it long ago, but now I saw that soemone had uploaded an uncropped high reslution version, so I simply thougt the bad res version was redundant. But I'l make a similar crop of the new image and upload it on top of the bad res one then. Unrotated versions are pretty much useless duplicates though, since the rotated version should had been uploaded on top of the unrotated one, instead as in a new file. You can add {{Rotate}} to rotate images with a bot. Then the "new" image will be uploaded on top of the old one. --MGA73 (talk) 12:33, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

They are not alike anyway. One is yellow and one is white. So you can't delete as a duplicate. But all files can be nominated for deletion if someone thinks that file is useless (unused and not likely that someone will ever use them) so if you do find crops, lores versions or ??? then you could start a deletion request for those. --MGA73 (talk) 13:54, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

I uploaded the best original scan of this that I could get. I then rotated, colour adjusted and otherwise edited the original, and thought it better to keep the original as a seperate file as a source document. To get the highest quality, further crops or improvements can be made from the original rather than working from derivatives, which avoids any degradation that happens at each step due to the lossy JPG format. Of course it may be easier for derivatives to be made from derivatives, but this way people have then option if it matters. :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 19:49, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Could do, but it doesn't save any space or anything, and you can't easily link to the version you want. When I upload my own photos I used to just upload what I thought was the best crop etc. I now usually upload the original "from camera" version, then upload my best cropped/cleaned-up version over top. But with images from other, sources on the web etc, I usually like to keep the file exactly as it is found as an 'original'. Then any derivative versions can all link back to it. I suppose the only difference is in one case I have created all the versions, and in the second case the derivative works can be done by anyone without reference to the original author or other users of the image and it doesn't seem right to obscure the original. Another thing that often happens is that an image is renamed or uploaded to a new project but only the last version is kept, that revision history and the original are lost. --Tony Wills (talk) 05:08, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Hm. Maybe whoever did the blotter was influenced by the Disney film, although it looks to me that the depiction is not identical to either the Disney version nor the 19th century Tenniel version (eg) File:MadlHatterByTenniel.jpg. While I still don't think speedy is warrented, if you think there's a potential serious problem as a derivative work, I won't object if you list it on deletion requests. (Though if you do, I think I'd still vote keep unless something specifically and copyrightably Disney in the image can be pointed out.) Thanks for yout attention.
