Re: SVG Logo License edit

I just had similar exchange with Harvey and was about to let you know. I know he has no control over it but based on his email, it looks hopeful. He didn't give a specific reason why it was license that way, just that he would change it if he could. He also mentioned it would probably be good for logo as it's not catching on that fast. It could use a "new injection of life." He's a cool guy and I think Doug might be open to this too. Please let me know as soon as you hear from him. STS400CT.svg edit

Hi, thanks for fixing that image. Your version is much better, and I have reverted to it. I noticed a comment you made about drawing each item every time. If you know of a better method, please could you let me know, as I have just been using copy-and-paste. Thanks. --GW Simulations 22:40, 12 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:A Couple of things edit

  • Thank you :-)
  • There does seem to be an awful lot of disorganization. I don't really have much time right now, but I'll look more into it later today. If you want, you can go head and post the pages you had in mind (over there). Some may need to be dealt with separately. The ones you are absolutely sure about, I would just go head and move.
  • Yeah, I saw your response. Thanks for keeping me informed.

Rethink categorization and listing proposal edit

I have attempted to better express what I think the intent of the proposal was. I would appreciate you taking a look so that if I misunderstood your intentions the proposal can be corrected. --darklama 01:52, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is more precise and concise, but I think you may have stripped it of some of its impact. Globbet (talk) 23:08, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
What is the intended impact? What impact was lost by my changes? --darklama 12:42, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
I fear that it may be now be a little too technical and dry to attract the interest and support of the widest possible range of readers (mind you, I did use orthogonal). I don't think I was suggesting that an automatic system was definitely the way to go as I have no idea how it might work, more that the current mess needs improving. Globbet (talk) 23:17, 22 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
I thought you were suggesting a specific solution, which involved some sort of automation. Are you saying that you don't have a specific solution in mind? I'm starting to think I may have misjudged what the intent of the proposal was. Do you see a need for change/improvements yet are unsure what problems there are with the current system/approach? --darklama 23:05, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
No. Other way round. I know what I think is wrong, but I don't know what the answer is. Globbet (talk) 22:45, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

SVG questions edit

Two questions:
1) Does SVG (or the standard packages that do it) provide support for setting music? We have some files that are sheet music set in software -- should we ask that they be uploaded in SVG?

2) I'm an old AutoCAD hand, but know nothing of SVG. I have an AutoCAD R14 drawing that is currently here as File:Eritrean Railway Map of March, 1998.jpg. It should, obviously, be converted directly from the DWG to an SVG, without a bitmap in between. What's the easiest way to do this? The DWG uses splines to smooth the lines between the 150 data points, so the conversion package would have to read those correctly.

Thanks,      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:54, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

1) Afraid I can't help much with that off the top of my head. SVG is a graphic markup language, it has nothing that specific built in. There are some rather random looking examples of musical notation in SVG at Category:SVG_musical_notation. There is something called LilyPond which will output musical notation in SVG but I know next to nothing about it.
2) You might be able to convert it using Inkscape, but given a table of co-ordinates I would be daft enough myself to be tempted to investigate creating the SVG by hand. SVG uses Bezier curves, so there might be some form of conversion process needed. HTH, at least a bit. Globbet (talk) 14:35, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
1) That's all I needed. The discussion that triggered my question was about a PNG that had been produced in LilyPond.
2) Not so easy. The coords came from walking the railway and marking with a GPS at every important point (bridges, tunnels, stations, kmposts, curves, etc.). This was in the days when GPS had selective availability, so it took a lot of smoothing and knowledge of the railway's minimum radius to actually make the map. Starting over would dump several days of work. Looks like Inkscape might do it. Thanks      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 20:59, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Globbet!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
