Hi. As a result of your request at Commons talk:Flickr images/reviewers, I have added you to the reviewers list. Please see the instructions at Commons:Flickr images/reviewers and add {{User trusted}} to your userpage. You can ask me if you need any help. Cheers, giggy (:O) 23:58, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

G'day, in answer to your questions;
  • No, you don't need to use a script. I don't, I just manually add the code ({{flickrreview|USERNAME|~~~~~}}). Whatever is easiest for you.
  • With images such as Image:2371403246 e88fd8dca5.jpg, you don't need to make a deletion request (and while it's commendable, there's no obligation to search Flickr for the image either). Before I became an admin, when coming across copyvios uploaded from Flickr I'd just tag them with {{Copyvio}} and include a link to flickr in my tagging. If no source is provided, you can just add {{subst:nsd}} and remove the Flickr tag.
Hope this helps...thanks for helping out! :) giggy (:O) 23:46, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hallo! Port Lincoln Parrot edit

Thanks for uploading the photo of this parrot. Have you got any photos showing the front of the bird? Snowmanradio (talk) 10:00, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It should have a yellow belly and a black on the top of its head. Commons has photographs of the Twenty-eight Parrot, another one of the four subspecies of the Australian Ringneck, with a green belly and a red forehead. If you could get some more photos from different angles, it would help complete the set and help to illustrate the Australian Ringneck page on the en wiki. The commons has quite a lot of parrot photographs, but they only cover about 60% of the parrot species. With parrots it is sometimes best to get photographs of both male and female, but I am not sure if there are any big differences with the Port Lincoln Parrot. If there are any Rosellas, it would be good to have photographs of pairs as the females are less bright in some (but not all) of the Rosella species. The juveniles of the Crimson Rosella have green backs. Some zoos have a particular subspecies of a parrot and it would be well worth recording these details, And this is just some of the Australian parrots. Good hunting. Port Lincoln Parrot edit

Thanks for your Port Lincoln Parrot and other parrot photographs. Much appreciated. Snowmanradio (talk) 07:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your photograph of the Neopsephotus bourkii and the conures are also much appreciated. And also the lovebirds, amazons, Australian parakeets ... Snowmanradio (talk) 11:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

--S23678 (talk) 19:42, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

--S23678 (talk) 21:08, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

please stop to make and fill categories of plants on species-level? Thanks a lot! Denis Barthel (talk) 22:13, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The vote is over ten in favor of categories and not galleries, one person voted twice -- so I don't count that vote at all and me who thinks that they can exist together (both categories and galleries). Denis Barthel, if you know how to say stop then you also know where to find the current information about this.
I personally invision a whole new generation of nice users who are capable of making nice galleries when the images are worthy of the extra time, and categories -- that the old this way not that way world (which the software at least is bigger than) will mature with this idea. It is complex, I understand that. Denis Barthel: Take a deep breath and imagine making a gallery without taking apart the category.
Thank you both for your contribution. I worry about the day that the software is more capable than the people using it. -- carol (talk) 07:46, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Removing Categories edit

I have seen that in a number of cases you created for a plant a new sub-category and replaced the original category by the sub-category. For example the sub-category Category:Genista_acanthoclada. I suggest to keep in such cases one photo which is most characteristic also in the higher category. If the user does not know the exact sub-category he/she can select on basis of the image which sub-category to choose instead of looking into 20 sub-categories --Wouter (talk) 09:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

User:Denis Barthel edit

Hi, sorry to disturb you but i had a bad message from User talk:CarolSpears on my talk page and reading his talk page i found a message from you threating about the same topic. I'm doing catorization of species (and article/gallery when i have more time), but CarolSpears told me to stop! I think i'm not stupid but giving me just an order without any explanation/reason, i simply don't agree. So, i just would like to know from you if there's any reason (guidelines?) for avoiding creation of species categories? Best regards. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 07:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I do not completely understand this. I recently made species categories for much (most) of Category:Malvaceae and I make species categories almost always when I renovate an image from an old book about it. Today, I found that Category:Lilium pyrenaicum which I made recently had been emptied and made into categories. I left a message with the person who did this asking them to wait for an agreement.
I would encourage you to make categories and to not take apart galleries or categories. Anyone who tells you that this is what they do here needs to look at the places where that is discussed to confirm that. -- carol (talk) 07:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your message, can you just give me a link to the vote/discussion in 2005, i would be very pleased. I just want to say additionally i can understand that CarolSpears removes cats from galleries, but i cannot understand that he removes also that from pictures leaving them without any cats (see Image:Dertosensis1.jpg to Image:Dertosensis9.jpg and Image:Lilium leichtlinii var leichtlinii.jpg). Is there any very good reason for that? Best regards. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 08:32, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Usually I add categories to galleries. I have only removed family names from categories when the genus category exists (I cleaned out a large family last week and put them into subfamily, genus and species). It is rare that I remove a category from a gallery -- they (the gallery makers) can't handle it mentally! So galleries that I have made species categories get to live in both genus and species categories due to the delicate nature of the gallery makers.
Commons:Categories vs Galleries is the recent discussion with opinions and experiences shared at Commons talk:Categories vs Galleries and Bartel got a mention at Commons talk:Categories vs Galleries#Resolution_.3F. -- carol (talk) 08:39, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
It would be nice, also, if you could type the whole word category the same as you are typing the whole word gallery. The "cats" and "gals" war is old and it give the appearance that you are a happy part of it. -- carol (talk) 08:44, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will read the pages, i didn't that the word "cat" instead of "category" might be disturbing (for me it's just a shortcut). I have to go now. Thanks for page links and advises. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 09:03, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
It gets abused. -- carol (talk) 09:14, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, i need an advise from you: if there's a gallery and a category about a species, should i categorize the gallery with only the species category, or with only the genus category, or with both? Best regards. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 08:07, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

That is a nice template that is going on the galleries that you make. What reason do you really need advice from me? -- carol (talk) 08:35, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am going to put this chat here where it will be helpful to you, perhaps. I have left plenty of examples of what I do around. I do what I do. Other people do other things. I tried, for example, to have images of plant parts in the places where the plant descriptions start to use them but they were removed due to an idea and motivation to not have images in both the parent directory and the subdirectory. There are good reasons for that and good reasons to not have that. Interestingly enough, the TOL gallery makers never suffer from having that rule applied to them. The wiki rules are suggestions, some users seem to have them bend towards them more than other users.
The rules do not often "bend" towards me. -- carol (talk) 09:06, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I have recently read that User:Ikiwaner speaks for all of commons now, perhaps you should find out what we do from this user! Isn't it nice to have such a user? -- carol (talk) 09:52, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Amicalement, --Réginald (To reply) 06:29, 26 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Identification fautive edit

Tu as raison. Amicalement, --Réginald (To reply) 09:58, 26 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

--Floflo (talk) 18:22, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image:Alhazen.jpg edit

The license information for this image claims that the work is public domain because the copyright term has expired. When was the image drawn? Can you add a URL for the original source of the image? Thanks. Wronkiew (talk) 20:37, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Done Hi and thanks for the message, i added the basic missing information on that file. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 16:54, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I restored the license information request tag because the essential source information is still missing. In order for the image to be public domain, the original author or copyright holder and the date of publication must be known. Unless I'm missing something, the only source information that you added was a note that it was transferred from en.wiki. Who was the artist who sketched Alhazen? Wronkiew (talk) 06:19, 21 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.

The bill does say 1981 on it. The person who originally scanned it claimed that it was from 1982. {{Populate category}} edit

Hi Guérin Nicolas, you might like this template, you can use it to automaticly fill up a category like Category:Greenovia diplocycla. Multichill (talk) 08:41, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, i will try. For the name of the gallery, should i input its name or leave the mentin hint? Guérin Nicolas (messages) 08:47, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
If the gallery and the category have the exact same name (like Greenovia diplocycla and Category:Greenovia diplocycla) you can add {{Populate category}}. If the gallery has a different name, you have to supply a hint. After you added the template the template will tell you on which galleries the bot is going to work (example without hint, example with hint). Multichill (talk) 08:53, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I made a try at Category:Pelargonium cotyledonis. How long does it takes to populate? Guérin Nicolas (messages) 08:57, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looks good. The bot runs every hour (currently at :35). Please dont hop talk pages, i have a watchlist and i use it :-). Multichill (talk) 09:01, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 09:03, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunatly that wouldnt produce any results. The images the bot works on have to be either in {{Uncategorized}} or in one of the parent categories (Category:Pelargonium in this case). Category:Conservatoire botanique national de Brest is neither of those so the bot wont touch Image:Pelargonium cotyledonis02.jpg & Image:Pelargonium cotyledonis03.jpg. I wrote it this way to prevent errors and vandalism. You can find a list of pages my bot *will* work on at User:Multichill/Category suggestions. Multichill (talk) 09:12, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok i see the point. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 09:16, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
We dont want Petrus to end up in Category:Porn actors ;-) Multichill (talk) 09:23, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sure ;) I try again to call your bot when i will see an appropriate gallery : Category:Pelargonium peltatum should be good. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 09:39, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I used this template, but the bot populated the categories with a few number of images due to the fact that most of the images had already categories. Would it possible to have a special permission like trusted user which would allow to populate the categories with images even if they have already other categories? Guérin Nicolas (messages) 11:50, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have been thinking about it and might implement this in the future. Multichill (talk) 18:53, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

spam tools edit

It certainly looks as if you were given a spam tool that put that template onto the categories you were making here.

If you have a keyboard, can you try something for me? Instead of using "gallery.js" try editing the gallery page (the link to edit the page is found in several locations on the gallery page). Manually type [[Category:gallery name]] (using whatever the gallery name is where I have put the words "gallery name") and save that. Then, using the now red link on the gallery page (at the lower parts of the page using monobook skin and at the upper parts of classic skinned pages) click through that and add it to the correct category. The correct category for a species would be the genus.

I use the classic skin and this is so easy to be manually accomplished that it is not needful to use a tool for, in my opinion. -- carol (talk) 20:03, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I will consider your request, i just tried such tools to see how it works. Note : please, do not discuss about species categories and templates on my candidature page for adminship, it is not really the appropriate page, do it here as it is the most appropriate space. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 20:22, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough, can you find the portion of your contributions where you were not using javascript to work here? And, respectfully, this is a how-to I would nicely give to new users and not to a person requesting administrative privs after 2.5 years of activity. Please review what you are saying is not respectful here. -- carol (talk) 21:01, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Catégorie Crocus edit

Bonjour Nicolas,

Amicalement, --Réginald (To reply) 15:21, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Amicalement, --Réginald (To reply) 09:26, 4 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Amicalement, --Réginald (To reply) 16:34, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

IfD edit

I noticed you voted to keep this image: [1] Unfortunately, however, the image is almost certainly a copy vio. It was certainly copied from this web page: [2] The license is stated at the bottom: 'Copyright © 1996 Dr. Charles S. Finch, III, MD' If Commons uses it, we are violating Dr Finch's rights. By the way, user Crucifixion is very infamous for his copy vios. See the messages at the bottom of his talk page: [3] Most of his Commons images are just copy vios sadly. I hope this helps to increase your assessment of the situation. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 04:15, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Esby (talk) 13:16, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Guérin Nicolas, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. Also consider joining #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. Please come to #wikimedia and ask for an invite. Any admin from any project is welcome.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....

Hope you will enjoy it. -- Cecil (talk) 18:32, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Update edit

Thanks for the comments on that IfD. I trust only 3-4 of Crucifixions images which have the correct Metadata. The rest are pure copy vio. Admin Collard on Commons told me flat out once that "we know most of his work are copy vios even if we can't locate where he got the images from"...or words to that effect. BTW, I just got a legitimate replacement for that copy vio which is in the Met museum of NY: Image:Funerary relief of Amenemhet I from El-Lisht by John Campana.jpg from a flickr owner who agreed to change the license to let it be used on WP. So, I would say: 'problem solved.' With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:15, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • BTW, is there a Rfa page where I can check who is running for an Adminship on Commons. Personally, I am upset that I couldn't vote to support SterkeBak during his Rfa here. As usual, I am the last to know about such things sadly. --Leoboudv (talk) 20:20, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Félicitations edit

Cher Nicolas,

J'ai pu identifier ta photo Crocus at north of the montagne sainte Victoire by JM Rosier 1.JPG.

Amicalement, --Réginald (To reply) 12:50, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I recategorised these two files to place them with other domesticated variants of the species, separate from natural wild individuals. Why did you revert this as though it were vandalism? - MPF (talk) 17:22, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

They are bright yellow, not the natural green wild-type colour; that very clearly is a sign of domestication. And they have (per the en:domestication article) "become accustomed to human provision and control". But even if you disagree with this, it is not right to use the 'revert' facility for a disagreement of opinion; it is too inflammatory, as it is something normally reserved for vandalism, not for undoing legitimate edits that one happens to disagree with. - MPF (talk) 20:19, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Go-game-ear-reddening.jpeg edit

File:Go-game-ear-reddening.jpeg wasn't Flickr-washing, in my humble opinion. The file was uploaded to commons at around the same time it was uploaded to flickr. What's more, at the same time several pictures like the one uploaded to commons were uploaded to flickr. Erik Warmelink (talk) 01:24, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

You answered «since the original license is "all rights reserved" on Flickr, we cannot upload it on Commons», and I agree, we can not upload it to commons. However, the photographer may upload it and as far I can tell the photographer was the one who uploaded the picture to commons. Erik Warmelink (talk) 11:21, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
As far as I can tell, he didn't upload it from Flickr to Commons: he uploaded it to Flickr and to Commons. He owns the copyright, he can give a copy to Flickr under a restrictive license and another copy to Commons with an almost unrestricted license. As far as I know, he can not withdraw the "free" license and so he can not sell an exclusive license. Erik Warmelink (talk) 11:38, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, undeleting followed by a standard deletion request sounds great. I am not even sure that it should stay, but I do think that some discussion might be worth the trouble. At the very least, I will learn something about policy. Erik Warmelink (talk) 12:50, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

As you can probably see, the picture lacks the majority of captions, including the French one. The appropriate template - Template:Potd/2009-09-30 (fr) - still contains the previous caption, for the photo moved to October 1. I would greatly appreciate it if you could substitute it with a translation of the English caption which you can find here: Template:Potd/2009-09-30 (en). Col d'Agnes edit

Bonjour Nicolas. -- Basilus (talk) 16:16, 7 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

This DR edit

It was a mistake to restore this image. Admin captain tucker tried to contact the flickrowner with no success. I recommend it be deleted too. Sorry, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:20, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't see where the mistake is: i deleted myself such a picture, then i got a reclamation from the uploader (that the copyright holder agreed to upload such a picture), so i decided to restore it and to nominate it for deletion in order to have a votation from users. This is the normal procedure and i explained carefully the situation in the [introduction of the deletion request. So, where is the mistake? Can you explain me? Thanks. Personal rights edit

Bonjour Nicolas. A girl looking at herself in the mirror.jpg Merci beaucoup. Alessandro Zangrilli

Just for your information. Alessandro has asked 12 admins at the same time to perform these deletions. In between, regular DRs have been filed for Commons:Deletion requests/File:Portrait d'une femme.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:A woman's portrait.JPG, whereas the third image is heavily used on many projects. I would recommend not to file a speedy without any further input from the uploader. --Túrelio (talk) 13:27, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

De-adminship warning edit

Deutsch | Español | Italian

Dear Guérin Nicolas/Archives1. I am writing to you to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Season greeting edit

Cher Nicolas,

Amicalement, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 14:02, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Admin inactivity edit

Hi Guérin Nicolas. I am sad to tell you that your adminship has been removed in acordeance with our inactivity policy. If you'd like to be a sysop again, I'd kindly ask you to request so at COM:RfA. Sorry to tell you this bad news, abf «Cabale!» 15:35, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Guérin Nicolas, as you are no longer admin, would you mind to remove the admin-bit from your babel-box. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 19:39, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
