User talk:HawkFest

Return to "HawkFest" page.

Hi HawkFest,

nice pictures uploaded - thanks. I have two questions:

  • Who is Boomer - could not find him in the english wiki!
  • Why uploading the pic of Cristobal Huet, if its source and permission is not clear in the engl. wiki already? This will lead into a fast deletion request!

--Xgeorg 08:30, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! Sometimes it's hard to turn my back on great pictures (copyrights issues), but by digging long enough one can find that many are actually from national libraries and such (public domain).
  1. The Boomer... He is from Club de Hockey Canadien (there's a little paragraph about this man further down the page using his picture). His real name is Bernard Geoffrion, and he is the inventor of the slapshot in hockey.
  2. Because it was already accessible on the engl wiki, so I took the same chance (blushing)...
Best regards, HawkFest 05:52, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Boomer_slapshot.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Hello, the information I've provided includes the following :
  • Source : Bibliothèque et Archives Canada;
  • Date: 1958;
  • Author: Yale Joel;
By the way, Yale Joel is dead (here).
Canadian copyright law requires him to be dead for fifty years for his works to become PD. Until then, the copyright lies with his hires, or whoever he sold it to. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 12:53, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Category:Canadiens de MontréalEdit

Question: Do we need this category, if we have Montreal Canadiens? Both have the same pictures, topic and structure.... I will ask for deletion if there is no reason for this cat! --Xgeorg 14:02, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes we need it, for the francophone wiki. But if you really want to remove one of both, you should then remove "Montreal Canadiens" since the real name (registered name) is a french name, "Club de Hockey Canadien Inc.", or "Canadiens de Montréal". Regards, HawkFest 22:57, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
I checked the wiki commons rules - only English category names should be used and no double categories for different languages! Otherwise we would build a category tree for every language... This is not what you and I want, I guess Smile.gif
--Xgeorg 11:16, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
The "category names are english" rule does not apply for registered names, or names of people and places, unless the englified variant is widely used (like "China"). It makes no sense to go about translating the names of companies or clubs, if the translation isn't a "well known" name used in publications. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 09:47, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
So we should allow both categories Category:Canadiens de Montréal and Category:Montreal Canadiens ? Why ? Both terms are used, but then we would also need a cat for LNH, LMjHQ etc... --Xgeorg 14:19, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
No, not both, only one. I'm only saying that "all must be english" is not true. Which version makes more sense in this context I have no idea. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:30, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
I agree with that. In our case here, since it is a registered name and NOT a descriptive name, we should then keep the registered name or its common variant. For example, "Canada" is a north american indian name meaning "house" or "long house", but the category name uses Canada, not its english translation... As another example, same thing goes for "Notre-Dame" Cathedral : the category name would be "Notre-Dame", not "Our Lady"... ;-) The NHL Web site uses "Montreal Canadiens", but many other sources, even english ones, also use "Canadiens de Montréal". When you see the official name in or on official jerseys, logos, marketing material, the official french denomination is used, whatever and wherever the market. But do whatever you want, I don't really mind if your personal taste dictates an english name for everything... As long as the category for "Notre-Dame" will also be renamed as "Our Lady"... lol HawkFest 09:40, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Image:Guy Lafleur action3.jpgEdit

Hi - i have deleted this image, because there was no known author, AP was given as source (AP pictures are generally not free), and the license claims where contradicting (PD and CC). Please make sure you only upload images that are definitely free - please read Commons:Licensing carefully before uploading any more images. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 09:47, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

More images with bad/incomplete license claimsEdit

Looking through your uploads, I see several more images that have an unclear license status. AP pictures are generally non-free, and pictures from the Archives Canada are often problematic: not all images there are PD, and if they are tagged as PD, it is often unclear by what rationale - according to COM:L#Canada, the hockey are not PD yet. Also, the Archives Canada does not make claims about the status of the pictures in other jurisdictions, such as the US or European countries - we have actually had takedown requests for images (notably for an portrait of Einstein) that where declared as PD by the Archives Canada. Perhaps you can ask them explicitely about images from the "Hockey Hall of Fame"? Thanks. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:06, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

I created the content. And took some time do do so either. It would be quite frustrating to notice that it would be deleted. What should I do more? Hire a lawyer and pay mucho dineros just for giving free stuff upon which wiki will be able to capitalize? lolll just kidding... Actually, I have used different pictures, but just using at most around 50% of each one of them so as to compose the final product, even changing tonaslity for one or two. Is that legal? Please tell me what to do to normalize the situation, if it is "normalizable" considering what I've just mentioned. Thanks and regards, HawkFest 07:57, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
