ДП edit

Hello, Herbythyme. I'd like to delete the ДП which you've protected against the author User:Mikhailpetkov putting the speedy delete template. The situation here in Commons is a continuation of the long discussions in Bulgarian Wikipedia regarding the article, which is for the user's grandfather (bg:Беседа:ДП). Finally, decision was taken to delete the article due to low notability and self-promotion, and since then the user is insisting on deletion of the respective talk pages and deletion of all content uploaded by him. Since we don't have the practice to delete such talk pages, I've proposed that we may try a courtesy blanking. I myself would prefer to respect the user's request and delete the content here, because the tension keeps growing and that's counterproductive for both sides. Besides, some of the uploads do not really qualify as own works and their copyright status is somehow unclear. I've already deleted some uploads due to obvious copyright violations. What is your opinion? Spiritia 12:35, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK - there are times for rules and time not to worry quite as much - deleted. But bear in mind someone might not see it the same way as I do so it may come back. I certainly understand your reasoning and see no real point in keeping it under the circumstances. If it does get undeleted I'll try for the blanking idea - it is watchlisted so we will see. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:44, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, Herby. Hope won't be a matter of further discussions. Spiritia 20:06, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I would say that approach was perfectly reasonable. Happy to have contributions/must protect copyright. I deleted one file which the naming suggests is not conventionally obtained - lack of EXIF too. You removed an image of mine - it will now now let me reupload it citing it as copyright infringing. I can assure you that I am the copyright holder of the image and can provide evidence if neccessary. SamClarkNZ (talk) 05:38, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

You have removed the Site "Lenk von Wolfsberg". Why so promptly. There' no copyright infringment! I'm new at Wioki? Perhaps I need help? Im protesting against the extiction of this page! User;Sach47 22:53, 3 March 2011

Block request edit

You just deleted File:Paoloandgirlfriend.jpg at the request of the uploader, User:PaoloNapolitano. The image was taken from singer Amie Miriello's MySpace page, which the user had on their English-language Wikipedia user page with a caption reading "Me and my girlfriend". They removed the image and requested deletion when I pointed that out here. Would you mind blocking the user to prevent them from uploading any other images? Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 23:33, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Herbythyme, I will post this on Delicious carbuncle's talk page as well, so that he is aware of this. As we assume good faith of all editors, except in situations where it is not possible, a block for PaoloNapolitano would be heavy-handed and not within general practice on Commons. I will post a note on PN's talk page, advising them not to upload copyright violations in the future, and that should suffice for this time. In the absence of evidence of egregious behaviour, there is no reason assume bad faith on the part of PN -- perhaps education is all they need. I will note, that this block request by Delicious carbuncle should be viewed within the context of what appears to be a case of cross-wikiing of disputes and events on enwp, as outlined on English Wikipedia[1][2]. I will also be advising Delicious carbuncle that if they continue to bring here disputes from off-Commons, and from other projects, there is a good chance they will themselves be blocked for harassment and trolling. Zero tolerance! russavia (talk) 02:47, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure Herbythyme is capable of following the links I left and making their own determination. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:43, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks DC - I'll check it out. Regards --Herby talk thyme 07:46, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unless I am missing something the user is not blocked on en wp and 1 copyvio here doesn't make me even think about a block here. The user has been warned - enough for now. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:49, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The user is blocked now. They were indef blocked, but that block has been reduced to 24 hours by User:Fæ. The user uploaded an image for the deliberate purpose of deceiving readers (albeit only about the user themselves, not on an article), which is a bit different than most cases of copyvio. I'm not attempting to change your mind about blocking, just setting the record straight. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 11:54, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
It appears the indef block has been reinstated by a checkuser and there is a request pending for checkusers on other language Wikipedias (possibly related to User:88.88.233.130). It may be worth taking a second look at this case. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:33, 5 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK - blocking is about preventing disruption. This user shows no real sign of that. Latest uploads appear genuine, there is no sign of puppet accounts. Commons is about freely licensed media - this user is giving us that and not disrupting Commons - I see no need for a block at this time - thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:20, 5 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
The block on English-language Wikipedia has been changed again. It can now only be removed by ArbCom. This appears to be a prolific cross-wiki vandal. Again, just updating you, not trying to change your mind about blocking. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 14:14, 6 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
If that is the case Arbcom should seek a lock on Meta --Herby talk thyme 14:15, 6 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey Herby! I was bould enough to undelete your deleted image without going to undelete as it is (in my opinion) a very clear case of Commons:Threshold_of_originality. Hi Herby, I withdrew your speedy notice on this picture, because the uploader convingcingly claims to be the author. Searching edit

Hey Herby, hope all is well. Random question as I can't find anything on this: Do you know of any problems with the search functionality? Every so often, I do not get any results, even if I put in "bread" or "blue" or some other random subject that I know should get lots of results? thanks -- Deadstar (msg) 08:09, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

hm perhaps it's to do with some gadgets I switched on (a good while ago) - switching them off. See if that helps. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:13, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
These days some gadgets seem to cause me problems though not had that one specifically. Another possible issue - httpS or not? --Herby talk thyme 09:49, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't seem to have helped (enough). I also cleared cache, logged in/out etc., but it's hard find out what is causing is as the issue is intermittent? Extremely annoying though. Might have to do with the pc I'm logging in from - lots of internet settings are disabled etc., but would have thought it would be all or nothing, not this randomness. Anyway. I'll try again later. Thanks Herby, -- Deadstar (msg) 08:05, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and I checked - it's all http, not https. If I add the "s", nothing much changes except for a popup about non-secure items. 0 search results all the same. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:08, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Herby, I got a message that you deleted the file I uploaded due to copyright violations. The copyright for the image will be held by the publisher of the newspaper/magazine. To host the file here we would need permission via COM:OTRS. This is simply to protect the copyright holder - thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:46, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Poster - Two Weeks in Another Town 01.jpg edit

Would you please either undelete the file or indicate where there is a copyright notice? It was tagged with {{PD-US-no notice}}, which means you would have to check the poster. Double checking at the source (here) does not show a copyright notice, just that the Litho was in the US; this litho notice indicates that it was first published in the US and would therefore need a copyright notice. As there is none, it's PD. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:11, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Opposition effect edit

Hi,

I've reverted your edit to this category (removing external link ). I disagree with your justification (out of scope).

I'm currently trying to make the atmospheric optics categories as easy as possible for all users, whatever their grasp of the science might be. There are a lot of opportunities for confusion between the different phenomena involved, resulting in many images in the wrong categories, and worse, wrong images in the WP articles. My take on this is to add informations to the gallery descriptions, using descriptions as well as internal and external links.

The external links I add are to the relevant page(s) from which is IMO the best synthetic source on atmospheric optics, presenting each phenomenon with a clear explanation and a selection of the best available images. The point here (scope) is that both of these are necessary for a user to decide what type of effect their own pictures feature. In this respect unfortunately but understandably, the WP articles by themselves are not always very helpful, and neither are the existing media in Commons. Mostly, there are just not enough images of good occurrences of each type of phenomena (except for the few most common) because they are pretty rare (there are even no images at all for a bunch of them yet). Hence the resorting to the best outside source I can think of.

I hope you'll understand my point.

Cheers, 84.97.149.211 09:54, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually Commons is here to host media and solely that. As such external links are almost always outside our scope so I will be removing it again. The link may or may not be appropriate on en wikipedia but it quite definitely is not here. --Herby talk thyme 12:48, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Looking deeper the link placement here on Commons can only be called excessive and more akin to spamming. I am removing them - there is no reason why a particular site should be linked in such an excessive fashion. I regret to say it the link is placed again I will blacklist it and I am reviewing the situation across all wikis --Herby talk thyme 13:35, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your constructive interventions. Since I'm obviously not going to fight it out with you, is there a way or place to invite any open-minded third party for arbitration? 84.97.149.211 19:25, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Piermario Morosini.jpg edit

Why do u erase from Commons my photo "Piermario Morosini.Jpg"? don't u see the exif? Don't u see that there isn't copyright violation? Please I wish an explanation for your behavior completely arbitrary. --Prof.Quatermass (talk) 10:39, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Prof., didn't you read Herby's comment on your talkpage? It answers everything. The source, http://www.alelivorno.it/, is under a CC-BY-ND-NC license. Provided this license is legitimate at all for all content of this website, then it is still not allowed on Commons, as we require all uploads to be free for commercial use (NC=no commercial use) and for making derivatives (ND=no derivate). --Túrelio (talk) 10:49, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm the official photographer of www.alelivorno.it... See the exif... and see this: http://www.alelivorno.it/index.php?option=com_joomgallery&func=viewcategory&catid=48&Itemid=2 I'm Amex in www.alelivorno.it The immage in homepage of www.alelivorno.it is without exif bcause i've modificated it....--Prof.Quatermass (talk) 11:15, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
The EXIF data of the file in question has no usable license information, as it just says "Creative Commons 3.0 - unported" — at least in my EXIF reader. It could be CC-BY, CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-SA, CC-BY-ND, CC-BY-NC-ND, etc. In addition, the EIXF does not say that User:Prof.Quatermass is identical to photographer Amex and the image on the website is slightly larger in 1 dimension. Anyway, as Herby told you already, you should issue a separate permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org ideally using the official email account of alelivorno.it. --Túrelio (talk) 12:14, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Screenshot Licensing (proper) edit

Hi, you deleted an image that I created and uploaded, without explanation, and in spite of my willingness to discuss and learn via its talk page (also now deleted). Would you mind reviewing a block? edit

I mean this one, of course.

I certainly hope that my love and respect for you is a given, and while my love and respect for commons has been brought into question lately, I hope you know that I am who I am, even after all these years :-).

WP went downhill when the drama fans circled their wagons and got away with it (they're improving incrementally now). I'm reasonably sure that the same thing is happening now on commons, which makes me want to dope-slap somebody (but who?).

Sorta kicking myself for not being in the position to stop this myself, of course, but the farm/business/daughter/life has prevented me from being "active" for the last few years ;-). --SB_Johnny talk 01:10, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gee thanks. Sadly Commons seems to be attracting dramas that have little or nothing to do with Foundation projects never mind Commons and for my own sanity I'm mostly doing what I hope all good Commons folk are doing and keeping heads down till the idiots find somewhere else to play their games. As a big fan of of silly "policies" I think a new (personal) one is in order here - avoid externally created dramas.
I'll stick with basic mop duties - it is simple and I understand that... --Herby talk thyme 07:53, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Do you think it will blow over? It seems to be gaining momentum rather than losing it right now, hence the need for the cooler headed types to grab the reins a bit... --SB_Johnny talk 14:53, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
IIRC woodlice are supposed to be the ones who can survive the nuclear blast... Maybe it will just clean everything out nicely. --Herby talk thyme 14:58, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I thought it was cockroaches? (Interesting though... what you call woodlice we call sowbugs or twiddlebugs). --SB_Johnny talk 16:02, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
You could well be correct there - I just have loads of woodlice in the garden and no cockroaches that I know of. It looks like one side or the other have just won something - it remains to be seen what they have "won" - certainly not respect. --Herby talk thyme 16:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
It is often written that only cockroaches survived the H-bomb tests on Bikini Atoll, and I have assumed that is correct. But this [4] suggests it might be otherwise. But they certainly can withstand a lot more radiation than humans. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 16:24, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ah well if it will only save me from radiation that probably won't help here... --Herby talk thyme 16:26, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Earlier today I was reflecting on the ways that wiki-drama could be compared to radiation (e.g.: X-rays are good for showing things but bad for you if you have to much, radiation both causes and is used to cure cancer, etc.), but frankly my mind is far too distracted by poisonous plants in the goat pasture and the general business of spring to write a clever essay about it. Perhaps you'll be kind enough to remind me in July when things slow down a bit :-). --SB_Johnny talk 22:27, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Speaking of plants and things - I have quite a bit of wild garlic - maybe I could use it to keep the "evil spirits" at bay...;) --Herby talk thyme 13:38, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I've got that too. Frankly I'd prefer to have evil spirits if it meant that the f***ing wild garlic was gone! --SB_Johnny talk 22:31, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Funny with the woodlice as I did not know that vernacular name too. In Denmark we call them "bænkebidere", which literally translates to "bench biters". Now, I had never thought about why they had that name, but apparently it dates back to the mid 17th century in Zealand, and the name is apparently due to the fact that very badly maintained and moist wooden furniture, like exterior benches can be attacked by woodlice. Now, than was a tangential comment but a nice digression from dark times on Commons. --Slaunger (talk) 20:05, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Whenever I move pots in the garden there are some underneath and they start scuttling around then to look for somewhere else.
Nice digression used to be part of Commons so it is nice to have that again :) --Herby talk thyme 20:56, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
That happens here too, but now that I'm a proud chicken owner, I (or more importantly my daughter) know(s) what to do with them! --SB_Johnny talk 22:27, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Spam blacklist issue edit

Herbythyme, please see my recent comments in a couple of places referring to your Spam blacklist action here as "wrongful". I do believe that what you did was wrongful, and I do believe that the Commons community has weighed in extensively on the side of it being wrongful. However, I harbor no ill will toward you. I would just like you (or someone) to revert your wrongful decision. I'd prefer a note on my Talk page if you respond. Thanks. -- Thekohser (talk) 17:09, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

It appears that consensus is to remove the link from the blacklist. Cla68 (talk) 23:01, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
It certainly does, but note that Herby wasn't the admin to add them to the blacklist - he just fixed the formatting - Alison 23:21, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

As long as folk going on making friends and influencing people off wiki they may be best not expecting too much from me. If there is any consensus for anything - it would be slightly odd here on Commons - then I am sure someone will do something about it. --Herby talk thyme 13:37, 10 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Herby, my apologies for erroneously attributing you to the adding of the spam blacklist links. Per Alison above, I didn't realize it was just a formatting process that you lended a hand to. As you'll see, I've been contributing lately to Commons, some fairly decent work. I also contribute to Wikipediocracy.com. If you feel that the two activities are not compatible, it's unfortunate that you've drawn that conclusion. No time for hate! -- Thekohser (talk) 16:22, 10 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I always found "hate" utterly pointless. Equally pointless of course is "journalism" which is published without getting the facts right - common but pointless --Herby talk thyme 16:45, 10 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kindly state with what legal justification you have deleted my page. I do not think that you have the authority to do so, but I am interested to hear your arguments. Xenos2008 (talk) 12:54, 11 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Siddiqui edit

If you can please check this because I'm getting sick of these "Pak" IDs uploading non-free images. Thanks.--Officer (talk) 11:51, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Poster - Joanna Vassa.JPG edit

I think the uploader may be the director. Most of the images he uploaded are used in a new en:wp article about the film. That article lists the stills photographer as another person. I found his website and sent him an email about the use of the images here. The director may have permission to use them or may even be the creator of these particular images. I just thought I would let you know.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:17, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough - however it would need OTRS licensing though anyway. --Herby talk thyme 11:06, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I got an email back. The director is also the producer, and has permission and/or copyright for the images. I told the photographer that commons is picky about the copyright issues. I also left a note at the OTRS notice board.--Canoe1967 (talk) 07:51, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Great - undeleted and it will need otrs number when that arrives. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:16, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Re-deleted by another admin. It may be easiest to just have the creator upload, or the producer/director put a copyright release tag on it. He may have the copyright for the poster.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:43, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK - sorry about that - they obviously didn't look at the deletion history :( --Herby talk thyme 07:38, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ayuda edit

Hola, disculpa mi español pero tengo algo de prisa y quería saber si podrías ayudarme. Inicié esta consulta y no estoy seguro si la realicé correctamente, ¿podrías atenderla?. De antemano gracias. Carrousel 07:37, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

My es is poor but I think I get the message however I have very little time left today but will look tomorrow. --Herby talk thyme 17:18, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
A petición de Herby respondo. Hola Carrousel. --Marco Aurelio (disputatio) 16:20, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Possible restoration of Commons:Categories for discussion/2011/08/Category:Transcription edit

I noticed that you deleted Commons:Categories for discussion/2011/08/Category:Transcription for spam, but Category:Transcription says there is a CfD there. Is there a chance that previous revisions contain a pending CfD? If so, can you restore it? Since I'm not an admin, I can't see whether the CfD was overwritten, or just never existed and should be started. --Closeapple (talk) 02:46, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have just noticed this as I have Herbythyme's talk page on my watchlist. As the page had legitimate content before it was spammed/vandalized, I've restored the page and removed the vandalism. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 08:42, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Damn - my bad and apologies (& thanks to AFBorchert). There is such a pattern/quantity of these attacks I tend to assume that they almost always create the page. --Herby talk thyme 10:46, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Georges Weah.jpg edit

Simple request — would you mind undeleting this and instantly re-deleting it, but with the URL of the source in the re-deletion rationale? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 16:00, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Herby is in break; so, don't expect a rapid reply. --Túrelio (talk) 18:05, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Err - why? Without wishing to get into a massive discussion we delete copyvios like that (& two urls are specified). Thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:47, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
May be he actually meant, without saying it, putting the URL in the edit-summary. --Túrelio (talk) 18:29, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

maybe not sure edit

hi! this delete[6] made a problem. this file hereFile:Abu_Yahya_al-Libi_voice_pronunciation.ogg is not working due to this. --Neogeolegend (talk) 10:50, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Whatever the problem is it is not that deletion which was in April and was not a proper page anyway. Likely something else either with the file or some mediawiki update. --Herby talk thyme 10:55, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there is a new request for your attention. Thanks. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 14:10, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Email and talk page seems a bit over the top in the circumstances. Will get to it when I have the time. --Herby talk thyme 14:19, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

User:Jermboytold2 edit

Would you mind explaining to me why this user was blocked? It says "abuse of multiple accounts", but doesn't go any deeper. It looks like the user used multiple IPs, but only one actual account, and even then I don't see any signs of harm. I was kinda looking forward to working with the user in the future, he was creating pages on Commons and articles up on Wiki-En for my recent road sign uploads. Fry1989 eh? 02:03, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

One of those "odd ones" really. This guy has been around Commons almost as long as I have (& being blocked that long!). He did used to be very disruptive (& he had quite a number of persona before Jerm*). Recent links are here, here and a fair bit with links here.
In the end I'm not sure the degree of vandalism compared with constructive stuff and I tend to leave the IPs unless I have nothing else to do (which is rare). Hope that helps - cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:29, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
What a shame. Thanks for explaining why. Fry1989 eh? 19:18, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I just realized I had seen that user name before at User talk:Jermboytold, when I nominated for deletion that account's upload of a map that is inaccurate. I guess that one should be blocked too. Fry1989 eh? 00:02, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Weird stuff - why create a new account when no one had spotted the old one. Appreciated and done --Herby talk thyme 07:41, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
And here's a 3rd account fresh today: Jermboytold3, just uploaded a new sign. If there's a way to get the user to agree to one account and no IPs, I think it'd be worth a try. Fry1989 eh? 21:18, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yep - 'preciated - will seek global locking if anything else arrives. Pics are lovely however the very very obvious promotion of a website is not on. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 16:15, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
