Category:Germa-language signs in Austria edit

Hi. Please follow all the instructions in {{Delete}} when you choose to use it. I chose to use {{Category redirect}} instead.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:15, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jeff, "Germa" is not a language. I created the page inadvertently while cleaning up categories, and I see no point in keeping it. -Iketsi (talk) 00:20, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
And Category:Spanish-language by country?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:29, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I would keep the redirect in this case, because you could argue that Category:Spanish language by country, which is meant to contain files about the "Spanish language" by country, does contain "Spanish-language" files by country. It's a bit far-fetched, but not blatantly wrong like "Germa", which would set a precedent for an inordinate amount of redirects for other misspellings (Greman, Germann, Grman, Grmnn, Germam, etc.) -Iketsi (talk) 00:43, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Spanish language categories edit

I praise your work on language categories, but you've forgotten this: Category:Spanish words and phrases and this: Category:Ñ.

@LBM1948: What are you suggesting? -- Iketsi (talk) 17:10, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Iketsi: I'm talking about including these categories in the template Texts by language, like the one seen in the header of the category "Spanish texts". I don't know how to do it.
--LBM1948 (talk) 17:41, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@LBM1948:   Done. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still not sure how to integrate Category:Ñ and other language-specific letters, but I will figure something out eventually. --Iketsi (talk) 19:44, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Image note edit

Sorry, I removed the duplicate of the plaque text at File:Dülmen, Hausdülmen, St.-Mauritius-Kirche -- 2016 -- 3696.jpg. I'll modify my bot to add such kind of text at structured data (SDC). I think that this will be enough. (My bot will add the position of the plaque at SDC too. Thank you for adding the note. --XRay 💬 06:09, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@XRay: Very cool. Where can I find more information on your bot? Your upload templates are impressively thorough. --Iketsi (talk) 06:17, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, there is no detailed information about my bot. It's a bot only for my own images (but with bot flag). It's based on my way of describing images and very huge configuration files. I find it extremely boring to do certain actions manually. With the bot, I achieve that almost all of my images benefit from improvements in the descriptions, categories and structured data. --XRay 💬 06:38, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Category:Turkish-language gravestones edit

Hi. As you made edits on Category:Turkish-language gravestones, initiated Category:Turkish-language gravestones by country and Category:Turkish-language gravestones in Turkey, you should also place 90-95 % of the files in the first cat to the third cat. At this moment it looks like there is only one "Turkish-language gravestone in Turkey"... Please. I am writing with two fingers; find a practical way to do the job. Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 03:30, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

A name edit

Children playing next to the Green line, (North) Nicosia

A stolen name: Republic of Cyprus. The Greek Cypriots stole this name, abducted the federal state based on political equality of Turks with the Greeks on the Island. Federalism is not always made based on territory. This "former" republic was based on a federalism without borders. Every function in the government was defined, who would assume which role, etc. Of course that was not serving to the Enosis ideal of some who ousted the Turks from all government bodies and tried to annihilate them, only within the first couple of years of independence. Find and read sources about the Bloody Christmas (1963) but further from clumsy WP texts (I think I wrote one of them or contributed "considerablemente"; still clumsy, how can you claim Greeks make massacres and pogroms, they are only objects of these horrible crimes, they never do anything bad...) Whatever, from January 1964 (within a few days) Turks organized in the north of the Island under different names like "Temporary" or "Autonomous" administration, federated state and in the end as a Republic. Do not think that Cyprus was divided in 1974 with the Turkish Peace Operation, it was always divided since December 1963. What Turkey did was to put an end to a decade of suffering for the Turks in the south (living in late 20th century concentration camps; they had to take a "permission" from the Greek Cypriots to travel from one village to another, and still at least a busful of them were found assassinated in cold blood and in a mass hole. There is even a film about this, but of course Turkish Cinema is not Hollywood and Hollywood generally makes films of Christians killed by Muslims (something as saddening as the opposite). What was I going to tell you? Ah, even if the name is "stolen" (that Republic also belonged to Turks) I believe we should use "Cyprus" only for the entire Island and use "Republic of Cyprus" (sic) for the Greek Republic. This is due to the spirit of the state of affairs on the Island: We have two "sovereign" bases, we have the UN-administered "cushion" area in-between the two republics, and then two independent states. This is well established in many WPs, even partly in the Greek-lobby hobby version. Look at WD, you will see many WPs that separate the Island and the so-called Cyprus. We are not here to make subjective discussions (I am subjective, those who oppose me are also subjective) but simply reflect the state of affairs. That requires using a separate categorization for the whole of the Island and another for the Greek state claiming to own it all (as in the case of the Eastern Mediterranean, some people always want "all"). I tried to do this but rudely reverted although there was a discussion. When you do not deign to come to the discussion page, or even participate at a discussion you opened, then we cannot advance. If I was telling a justified opinion, why did people neither let me do the obvious nor discussed anything? (Not necessarily with me, but with the community, why?) Do we have a favourable stance towards some countries or peoples here? I doubt some of us do. I feel good that in this case at least I am with the oppressed -in the past- one. They need some positive discrimination after decades of suffering, isolation and embargos. E4024 (talk) 14:36, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@E4024: I see your point. You seem quite invested in this matter. When is the last time this was brought up in a community-wide discussion? "Ireland (island) vs the Republic of Ireland" and "Macedonia (region) vs North Macedonia" debates come to mind. —Iketsi (talk) 02:33, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Other than the discussion I linked above? OK, see here: Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/04/Category:Ireland. I was told that there was no separate cat for the Island of Cyprus but yes we do now. Just as many WPs and WD, naturally, make a distinction between the Island and the partial country that ridiculously claims to own it all, we also have to make a clear separation of cats to reflect the state of affairs on that island. E4024 (talk) 17:13, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@E4024: I don't see any issue with applying the same logic that was used for categorizing files in/on Ireland. The most straightforward solution would be to keep current "X in Cyprus" categories as-is while keeping in mind that they refer to the entire island (regardless of administration). Wherever it is necessary to distinguish between particular political entities on the island, we can create subcategories (X in the Republic of Cyprus, X in Northern Cyprus, etc. Granted, "Republic of Cyprus" might still not be an ideal name for everyone, but it is the de facto standard until Greeks and Turks sign something akin to the Prespa agreement. An alternative would be to continue referring to the Greek Cypriot State as "Cyprus" and use "Cyprus (island)" for the island as a whole. —Iketsi (talk) 18:26, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Like in Commons:Categories for discussion/2021/02/Category:Roads in Ireland? No, thanks. E4024 (talk) 18:30, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Lay out your case, and we will find a solution. Are you suggesting a subcategorization scheme more in line with Hispaniola and Borneo? —Iketsi (talk) 18:37, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have not seen Borneo, no idea about it. I have visited Hispaniola and saw there were two countries. Names are important but "what is what" is more important. If one of the countries on the island of Hispaniola was called "Republic of Hispaniola", the fact about the island being home to two countries/states would not change much. (IOW, it is not the name, although sometimes it is "how the name is manipulated to give a wrong impression", the real issue is the essence.) E4024 (talk) 18:51, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have no issue in keeping Cyprus (the island) separate from the individual political entities on it. What do you think would be the best course of action from here? —Iketsi (talk) 01:34, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
To begin working and not to be afraid of doing the correct. This requires to make a stroll through Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles first of all. I know I am repeating myself, but again: Many major WPs have made "separate articles" and "separate cats", for the country (in the south of the Island) that calls itself "Cyprus" and for the whole of the "Island of Cyprus". Here we have the Category:Cyprus (island), we also have a Category:Cyprus. For me this last cat must be a disam page, and not the cat for a partial state. For the Greek State I made the "Category:Republic of Cyprus", but as you can see it was reverted. Also, the so-called discussion here did not prosper because even the user who opened it avoided discussing with me; I guess they were not interested in finding a consensus but doing what the Greeks want. (As you may see in EN:WP, that so-called encyclopedia, ignores even the UN Buffer Zone and the two "sovereign" bases of the UK only to impose us a "Geography of Cyprus" article where other WPs have "Cyprus (island)" articles. The general cat about the Island should have inside it the RoC, the TRNC, the "sovereign bases" and the UN Zone, all as separate entities. If you look at our "gallery" on license plates you will see that the UNFICYP (UN Interim Force on the Island) even has its own license plates. Until the Cyprus problem is solved, we may sort of say that that area is within commas "under UN sovereignty", and not a part of none of the two states, at the current state of affairs. Therefore all categorization in Commons should reflect this fact. One: general cats about the "Island", Two: Specific cats for all the separate/distinct entities. At this moment, we have many cats of Northern Cyprus under "by country" cats, but some user made templates to their own preference and some of those cats join with the "so-called Cyprus" in cat trees. Those templates must also be corrected. We are not a court here. We only reflect what we see: Northern Cyprus is not part of "Republic of Cyprus", even if that identity calls itself "Cyprus", Earth", or Universe. Northern Cyprus does not want to be part of a state that intended etnic cleansing on them, in 1963-64, 1967 and 1974 and had the Turks in the south living in concentration camp-like ghettoes for a decade beteen 1964 and 1974, until the Turkish Army saved them. (I can give you more info on these if you wish. We had photos of massacres of Turks, but they were all deleted by a grinning group of Wikipedians, under different pretexts; the same people that tried to lynch me in EN:WP because I wanted to add the Turkish name of Athens to its article, a city which stayed under Turkish sovereignty for centuries, while they imposed old names to any Turkish city. Always double standards. Whatever, do not give much time to these.) Anything not clear enough? E4024 (talk) 01:09, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I can think of a few solutions:

Option A
Cyprus is an island home to 4 distinct states considered countries for categorization purposes.
Island "Country"
Cyprus   Republic of Cyprus
  Northern Cyprus
  UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus
  Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Option A) Treat all four political entities on the island as separate countries for categorization purposes.

Notes:
  • Sets a precedent for other UN-controlled territories (UNDOF and UNMIK), unless the UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus is significantly more country-like than other territories under UN administration.
Implications:
  • Thousands of "Cyprus" categories will need to be renamed "Republic of Cyprus," and the files inside them that lie outside the de facto territory of the Greek republic will need to be moved to sibling categories.
Option B
Cyprus is a de facto country, currently an uncodified federation of 4 non-cooperating states.
Island "Country" States within said "country"
Cyprus

(island)

Cyprus   Republic of Cyprus
  Northern Cyprus
  UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus
  Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Option B) Treat "Cyprus" (the whole island) as a "country-like unit," categorize it "by country," and treat the 4 political entities as independent subsets of it.

Notes:
  • De facto, Cyprus – like Ireland – is an island; not a unified nation state. The four political entities on it are sovereign and politically distinct. On the other hand, they are bound by geography and history.
Implications:
  • Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus will not be categorized directly under "by country" categories, but rather under "Cyprus" in the sense of "a country-like non-political grouping of de facto sovereign entities on the island of Cyprus."
Option C
Cyprus = Republic of Cyprus; other territories (except Akrotiri and Dhekelia) are special entities on its territory.
Island Country Special areas in the country
Cyprus

(island)

  Cyprus

(aka Republic of Cyprus)

  Northern Cyprus
  UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus
  Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Option C) Treat "Cyprus" (the whole island) as synonymous with "Republic of Cyprus"

Notes:
  • De jure, Northern Cyprus is considered by all states except Turkey to be occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus (this is also evidenced by the Republic of Cyprus' flag).
  • Disregards the fact that Northern Cyprus is de facto a separate state.
Option D
Cyprus is an island home to 2 countries (Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus), a UN zone on the territory of both, and a military base belonging to the UK (Akrotiri and Dhekelia).
Island Country Special area in the countries
Cyprus   Republic of Cyprus   UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus
  Northern Cyprus
Military base
  Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Option D) Treat "Republic of Cyprus" and "Northern Cyprus" as countries

Notes:
  • Since it is a bit of a stretch to call a UN-administered area a "country," it is important to make a distinction between administration and ownership of a territory. Although the UN administers the buffer zone both de jure and de facto, it could be argued that half of that territory lies within each Cypriot state.

Iketsi (talk) 21:39, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I like options A and D.

Option A: OK. Cyprus is an island home to 4 distinct ENTITIES considered separate items/units? for categorization purposes.

Option B: Cyprus is an island, not a country; and as one the countries on the island (the so-called Republic of Cyprus") usurps that name this option is not acceptable. BTW the UN Buffer zone and the "sovereign bases" are NOT STATES. "Sovereign bases" means, no state on the island has sovereignty on those two territories (that is one of the reasons I always reject the "Cyprus-island country" lie. Even if the TRNC (and the buffer zone) did not exist, the island and the Greek country does not have the same amount of territory.) On those territories there is British sovereignty, we Turks and Greeks like it or not. (Even in Commons I saw a map with the British flag on the island. Let mes try to find it and show you.)

Option C: Not acceptable. TRNC is a state. It is not a state on the internet or within an apartment building, it has a territory, and a people; therefore it is a country. It is independent. If this independence is recognized or not by X, Y, or Z country that has no effect on sovereignty. When you have a government and exercise sovereignty on a defined territory that is it. You are independent and sovereign.

Option D: Also OK as I already said. Change Special area in the countries (for the UN Zone) to "Special area" or "Special area (on the island)". Thanks. E4024 (talk) 22:29, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bus routing road sign, Hallstatt: A small present to you, for your work in the area of signs

Hi. I do not know how to find and see a template, less edit them. The template used at Category:Aviation organizations of Turkey is made by you? It should use Category:Organizations of Turkey by type and not Category:Organizations of Turkey. I added the missing one but now it is not "duly" categorized. Cheers. --E4024 (talk) 02:07, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Barnstars edit

I reverted you at File:Darren_Gergle_01.jpg. Not sure what you were thinking. You might want to look to see if you made other similar errors. - Jmabel ! talk 21:51, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Jmabel: I believe you understood "JPG barnstars" as images of non-physical barnstars, but given that its parent category is "[...] by format", I believe it refers to the format of the file; not the nature of what it depicts. This is why I recategorized File:Darren_Gergle_01.jpg from Wikimedia barnstars to JPG barnstars (a subcategory of Wikimedia barnstars by format): because it is indeed a JPG file. I have since also added it back to Wikimedia barnstars, since it can be further subcategorized according to its other properties, including color, design element, etc. I created Physical Wikimedia barnstars to prevent future confusion. --Iketsi (talk) 01:37, 26 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Please look at Category:JPG barnstars. With a couple of exceptions -- which I would consider miscategorized -- it consists of JPG files intended to be used as Wikimedia barnstars. It is not a category for files that happen to be JPEGs and happen to have a barnstar somewhere in them. - Jmabel ! talk 01:32, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: Indeed. We are on the same page. The category should be renamed JPG Wikimedia barnstars, and the files that you consider miscategorized should stay in JPG barnstars, which will be a subcategory of generic (non-Wikimedia) Barnstars. Correct? --Iketsi (talk) 03:53, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Languistic maps by language edit

Are you sure about creating so many categories by language? The language used to write a map could just go in the structured data, using language of work or name (P407). I mean, I think that it is not very useful to classify the maps in "Linguistic maps of X language" into "Y-language languistic maps of X language". I think that if we want to divide categories like "Linguistic maps of X language", it should be more useful to classify them by the topic: like the dialects, isoglosses or countries it depicts, like in Category:Linguistic maps of the Russian language. Thanks for uploading File:אוסף התצלומים הלאומי שפרירה זכאי במחזה ״די כתובה״..jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Renaming categories edit

Please stop renaming categories related to the Czech Republic, there is no consensus on this (see Category talk:Czech Republic for example). Thanks. Jklamo (talk) 11:13, 21 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Jklamo: I appreciate the heads up, but aren't these edits as a little hypocritical? [1][2]

Langue mystère edit

Bonjour !

Place Clichy 09:43, 13 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Place Clichy: Simple erreur de ma part. --Iketsi (talk) 04:20, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
