Active park road in New Jersey or not

Is this File:State Line Lookout hiway jeh.jpg still active as a park road in the Palisades, or is it just used by bikers and hikers and the like? Because I just made a new category for Trails in New Jersey, and I'd like to know if it would be appropriate for this or not. ----DanTD (talk) 12:15, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

When I was there, that hot humid day when I fell behind everyone except the one whose job was to hang back and encourage the weak, this road was closed at the north or 9W end by a gate leaving room for bikes and walkers. All cars used a southern road to the lookout and the bike road didn't appear to have carried heavy motor traffic for years. Pale concrete, oil and rubber presumably washed out by years of rain and not replenished. Small cracks and one or two concrete slabs misaligned due presumably to uncorrected frost heave. No signage whatsoever. So yes, this was long ago a busy motor road but is now only a broad, well paved bike/hike trail. Nobody but my little bker gang was there, either, though a couple dozen motorists were at the lookout and their dozen or so cars parked in a lot with hundreds of spaces. And they asked, "What, you biked here from Manhattan?" as though we were crazy. And yes, it was beyond my proper powers, that day but it will be fun next time when humidity is lower. Odd thing, I don't remember signage saying "no cars" at the Lookout Inn end of the bike road but it must have been there. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for contributing File:Beekman Tower fr BB jeh.jpg. It's a nice clear photo. However it's skewed by a degree or two. It looks like the "leaning tower of Beekman". ;) Would you mind correcting that? If it's too much trouble I could do it. I know it's a small detail, but it bugs me every time I look at it. Aargh; that's something I sometimes don't notice when checking before uploading. I'll have to rummage for the uncropped version (I don't store my own pictures in the computer because the HD is too small) and redo it. And it's a busy time what with the Wikipedia anniversary party in New York tomorrow. Thanks for pointing it out and when the weather is nicer I'll also bike down there again for some pictures on a sunny morning when it will be prettier. New Queens Category

I recently added the Category:Woodhaven, Queens to the neighborhoods of Queens cat. Should I add more of the images of Forest Park there, or should I just leave them be? ----DanTD (talk) 15:46, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Gee, and all the pix are mine? We sure don't have many central Queens photographers. Forest Park is, far as I know, the boundary between Woodhaven on the south and Glendale and whatever else is on the north. Or to be more precise, the old township boundary now preserved in the distinction between 113-- ZIP codes on the north and 114-- on the south ran along the watershed inside the park, but that line runs mostly in the north of the park (rather, the park was mostly but not entirely laid out south of the line) so mostly it's a Woodhaven park, so yes, as a Manhattanite little familiar with Queens politics I'm comfortable with classifying the pictures that way. Nice to have industrious thoughtful people doing the category diffusions; I occasionally gripe but haven't the discipline to set out categorizations with the proper rigor. Still got western Brooklyn pix to select and geotag; might finish them tonight or at most tomorrow. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:47, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps some of it must extend into Kew Gardens, though, because when I was getting ready to change the cat for File:Overlook Queens Pk HQ jeh.JPG, I clicked on the geotag, and got a Kew Gardens address. Yes, as the ZIP code and geotag show and the photo itself hints, this is the north slope of the moraine, thus the old Town of Flushing. I suppose we could just make a cat for the park. Whatever. Drat; in northern Billyburg I'm usually near the riverfront, or tired or rushing, or all three. Maybe this springtime's photo scavenger hunt will scare up a pic of that station. Good going. Brooklyn seems more urgent, especially Fort Greene and perhaps East New York, but lately I'm pretty much sticking to my resolve to do little category work on old pictures until I've taken care of my backlog of new ones, which surely will be plural months.

East New York not having a cat is a big surprise. In any case, I just couldn't take it anymore and decided to make Category:Queens Village, Queens, despite the fact that so far the only item available is that category is the LIRR station. I am surprized none of my old pix are of QV. Must go down that part Springfield Blvd some time this summer, or Braddock Ave. What? I was definitely westbound on Braddock year before last. Oh, but it was nighttime and lighting my own way was trouble enough. Today was my first time on the bike since my injury. Pain is modest but so was my distance; only some 15 miles from Kensington through Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, Greenpoint, LIC and Midtown, mostly in unphotogenic or already fished-out territories. Led a pair of bewildered Dutch tourists to their meeting place on Empire Boulevard while lecturing them on Flatbush history. Hey, if they want my help they'll have to suffer a little. If you're going towards Queens Village, is there any chance you could capture the remaining structure for 168th Street (BMT Jamaica Line) along the way? Won't be in Jamaica this month. Tomorrow will be en:Kensington, Brooklyn, perhaps with a side trip to en:Myrtle Avenue during return; Thursday is en:Flat Rock Nature Preserve; Saturday is Wikipicnic; other business will also keep me busy. Hey Jim.henderson, I had a question your image [1], isn't that Maria Hernandez Park? I think that the school in the background in P.S. 123, on suydam and irving? Anyway I could be wrong but just in case, if it is, can you change the description on the image? Thank you in advance. Ah. I just finished rechecking, and though the schools have a similar facade, PS 123 has a sloped roof with dormers, while PS 151 has a flat roof without, as depicted in File:Irving Sq Pk Bushwick jeh.JPG. Image of w:Brooklyn Bridge

Hi Jim, I saw a few pics of yours and saw that you are active in New York City, so perhaps you`re the right man for this job. :-) At the Commons there is this drawing of the Brooklyn Bridge and I think it is the perfect position for an image of the bridge (especially for using it then in artiles to illustrate). But as it seems there is no such photograph here at the Commons (and Flickr neither). So I am wondering if it is actually possible to take a picture of the bridge from that position? Writing from my cellphone which notified me of a message while I was walking from Midtown to Brooklyn via Brooklyn Bridge. No, the depiction is from a tall building east of the Brooklyn approach, all of which are coop aparment houses or office buildings which would require security arrangements to enter. As it happened, I wasn't paying attention and took a wrong turn and walked over the Manhattan Bridge, which was lucky because it gave me a better understanding. The vantage point is approximately 40°42′13″N 73°59′21″W and in the daytime I'll do some geometric studies to confirm or disprove it.

I was on my way to dine with an old Brooklynite who thought the building seen under the Brooklyn approach was demolished in the summer of 2009 which would mean this picture shortly preceded its demolition. I thought it had to be a mid-century picture because the Verizon building is missing, but I was wrong; it's off frame to the right. Also the automobiles seem to be late century or turn of the century styles. So, the given date of June 2009 is probably correct. The picture is called a "drawing" but I think it's a photo that has been converted by some sort of computer process to look like a drawing.

Many sites are best seen from a tall building. However, most tall buildings in New York don't admit tourists to the upper areas, so photography becomes a tedious matter of finding the responsible authority and proving we are good people on important business. I lack the credentials and especially I lack the patience.

Painting has been in progress since last year in the main span. Aluminum sheets protect pedestrians from spray, and have the incidental benefit of greatly reducing the noise from motor cars. They also impede views from the walkway but the viewing platforms at the towers are clear. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:40, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

I worked out, that the vantage point the "drawing" was made from has to be about at 40°42′10.38″N 73°59′28.93″W. I was drawing some lines in the "drawing" and reconstructed them at an aerial view. The coordinates are where the lines were crossing. What do you think? Could it fit?

Pleasant evening though two people I was hoping for didn't show up, so I talked the one fellow through correcting a minor factual error in the USS Brooklyn (19th century) article and he might end up a rabid Wikipedian which would be delightful because he's a better photographer than me. No idea about the bridge painting schedule. I have other business this morning (even some real life matters!) but if you don't put your coordinates in the picture's description I'll do a rough check for fit, and do it this afternoon. My next visit to Brooklyn will be Sunday Noon, probably by subway (photographing a subway station that has changed its name) for a computer fair at Brooklyn Poly on Jay Street. I intend to walk from there to East 20th Street and the East River, probably over Manhattan Bridge again, for a 4PM folding bike festival. Much better Sunlight for BB photos at that time of day. Oops! I got busy and forgot to answer. You seem to have studied seriously the geometry of this location so I just rounded off your numbers and inserted them. Surely there must be many pleasures in your home town though mostly quieter ones than in NYC. I enjoyed visiting western and southern Germany in 1991 but did not come near the newly liberated East. Haha no, there must be a missunderstanding. I never have been to NY, I originally come from Southern Germany (where still my bike is), but now I live in Eastern Germany. But I am sure one day I will come to NY. :)
