Eiffel Tower edit

Hello - Could you fill me in about your deletion of the Eiffel tower picture? We were in full discussion about this on Wikepedia, and to date all reference points to the fact that a copyright of the type claimed by the SNTE has no hold on US territory. All the same, I have written Wiki's leading legal advisor on this, and am waiting for a response.

Was it you alone who decided this? Also, why wasn't I notified? Thanks. ThePromenader 13:18, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wait a second - you even deleted this one - Image:Paris Eiffel Tower from Place De L'Alma 2005-08-20.jpeg - ? This was shot during the daytime. I really don't understand this one. ThePromenader 13:27, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Commons is an international project. Since its servers are located in the US, we have to follow American law. But since it is international, we will also have to follow the laws of the country of origin. That US law allows it won't have any effect, since French law doesn't allow it. And remember, US law allows for a lot of things (read: fair use) that don't apply elsewhere. So if we were to follow US law only, we would get in trouble a lot of other places. {{Picture of the day}} placement edit

Hello. I noticed that you often add the {{Picture of the day}} template to image description pages at the bottom. Is there a specific reason you put it there instead of at the top? Do you know of any discussions that have taken place regarding the formatting of an image description page? I want to use a standard format when I edit image description pages so I'm tryng to learn about what others are doing. Thanks! ~MDD4696 17:30, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi! When I pasted it, I just did the easiest thing, which was pasting it the the end (so as not to press Ctrl+Home; yes, I'm lazy!): I actually thought about changing it afterwards, moving it to the top everywhere (before I added it to a lot of pictures, there was no standard on where to put it), but (obviously!) I haven't gotten around to do that. Jon Harald Søby 15:06, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kerguelen Position edit

Sorry I can't admit that the old position map was much better... because it didn't show Kerguelen's position on the world map. And in my eyes Kerguelen is close to the Antarctic but still 2.000 km away! And finally the old image was quite too colorful and I wanted to adapt the grey position maps used for the English Wikipedia. Regards --Varp 09:25, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

RE: HDImap current.png edit

Greetings! I reverted your recent update to the UN HDI map. While the map is better than its predecessor, the values for a number of countries are incorrect -- for example, Norway and Iceland have the highest HDIs and, thus, should be dark green. I would double-check and update it myself, but haven't the time just yet. If you could look after this, that would be great. Sorry, and thanks! Cogito ergo sumo 15:13, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's rather embarrasing actually, me being a Norweigan and all. I forgot. Anyways, after comparing my version and the current version, those two countries seemt to be the only wrong ones, so I'll just colour them in M$Paint (which is all I have available now). Admin news edit

Hello,

If you consent for statistics to be published about your actions as an administrator, please sign here: Commons:Administrator permission for statistics. (I expect that most people will not have a problem with it unless you are especially concerned with privacy.)

Also, please be aware that we now have a Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Please put it on your watchlist, if you haven't already!

Quality images edit

I really like your picture in Commons:Quality images candidates. But it will fail promotion if you don't get a better resoltion (1600px, at least). If you want to further improve it, try to correct the tilted verticals. -- Alvesgaspar 16:22, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Flickr review edit

Halla. Image:Flag of Austria-Hungary.svg edit

hello Jon, thank you for your image of the flag of Austria-Hungary. The red colour however is a bit different in hue, do you think you could change it in order for the red to be in line with the Image:Flag of Austria.svg? Thank you. sincerely Gryffindor 14:09, 4 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I'll be right on it. Jon Harald Søby 14:10, 4 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello Jon, thanks for that image, but I wanted to inform you that there had been various discussions on de-WP and en-WP before that led to the conclusion a single national flag for Austria-Hungary did not exist. Austria and Hungary had their national flags on their own (black-yellow in Austria and red-white-green with the royal coat of arms in Hungary). Common Austrian-Hungarian flags were only in use for common duties. That means there had been a war flag for the military (k.u.k. Armee) and a common merchant flag (or civil ensign) used by merchant ships. However the rest of the state duties has been administered separately by both Austria and Hungary and so a single national flag was not in use, and simply not needed. The image that you have uploaded depicts the Austrian-Hungarian merchant flag without the Austrian and Hungarian coats of arms. Such a flag did not exist but some flag lexicons on the internet started to present such a flag as a national Austrian-Hungarian flag some years ago, maybe because their maintainers did not know better. So you can regard this flag as a hoax. You won't find this in a printed flag lexicon. So I'd like to ask you to delete this image. Sincerely --AlexF 18:50, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I'll ask an admin to do it. Jon Harald Søby 19:13, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Bastique says you should post something about it on Commons:Deletion requestsJon Harald Søby 19:16, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, good idea. It's time to get rid of this strange, never existing flag. Gugganij 07:02, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I've done a regular deletion request. --AlexF 11:46, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Admin edit

Hei.

22:10, 14 September 2006 Jon Harald Søby (Talk | contribs) changed
group membership for User:Jon Harald Søby@commonswiki from sysop to (none)

Image:Flag of Poland.svg edit

Hello, Jon. Why did your revert to previous version? My color changes of the Polish flag reflect the official colors as mentioned in the articles I cited in my edit summary. In particular, see pl:Flaga Polski. I wanted to correct the flag as it is used on all Wiki projects. --Mareklug talk 21:57, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I always thought the Polish flag was red and white, not red and pink… Anyways, someone else reacted at the change, and said that the new colour had been wrongly converted from CIE1917 (or something like that) to RGB. The way it was, it looked like you had washed the flag in a laundromat with way too high temperature. Jon Harald Søby 06:42, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ratzenberger edit
