flickr --> Commons?

  • Hey, what's the generally accepted procedure for moving CC-whatever licensed photos from Flickr to Commons? And if I get a chance to do many images, is there a faster way? Tks Ling.Nut (talk) 10:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Basically, if the flickr image is licensed as   or    , and it seems plausible that the uploader actually created it, it's good to upload (upload link). This tool is very useful for uploading flickr images. Once you get the hang of it, it should take about a minute or less for each file. If you do it that way, the bot will automatically approve the image; otherwise, it has to sit in Category:Flickr review needed until another bot or person sees it. Hope this helps. –Juliancolton | Talk 12:45, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Are we safe enough to use this image from here for the Luke Wadding article? TIA Ww2censor (talk) 13:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I'm not too familiar with the copyright of paintings, so unfortunately I'm not sure. Maybe try asking somebody more knowledgeable in copyright, like Infrogmation (talk · contribs) or Martin H. (talk · contribs)? –Juliancolton | Talk 14:18, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Rollback thank you, naive question, comment

Thanks, that was quick!

Naive question... when I do rollback on en: (with Twinkle, I'm not a rollbacker there), I use the vandalism templates from w:Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace on the vandal's talk page. I don't see anything like that ability here, I've read

and there doesn't appear to be any suggestion that a message on the vandal's talk page is part of the process. So, question, do we just ignore putting something on the vandal's talk page? On en:, that's one of the best ways to judge a user's behavior and might, occasionally, deter bad behavior....

Also: I've also read through Commons:Counter Vandalism Unit and suggest that someone knowledgeable needs to separate and improve

  • its operational part (what are we doing today?)
  • its introductory part (what is CVU?)
  • its instructional part (how do I help CVU?)

and and that it needs some cleanup from someone who understands that not all of us -- even experienced editors -- understand things unless explained. For example, I am told

"When a user persists to be vandalistic, join #wikimedia-commons (if you haven't already done so) and say !admin@commons followed by who and why the user should be blocked."

Clicking on the link pops up a Firefox window asking what application should be used to open the link. I'm sure I could figure it out, but.... Thanks, . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 15:02, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I think user warnings are less common here at Commons than at enwiki, but they are still available. If you go to Special:Preferences, click the "Gadgets" tab and search under "Maintenance tools" for User Warnings, you'll be able to install a script that lets you easily advise users of various issues. A list of links will appear on the bottom-left of your screen when viewing a user talk page. As for CVU, Krinkle (talk · contribs) would probably be the best person to work on it, since he has been responsible for its development and maintenance for a while now. Commons:Deletion requests/File:¡No me quieres!.JPG

Commons has lots and lots of photos that are not quite in focus. This was the only one in category:Decision of the flower that actually showed the plucked petals. There was no copyright reason to delete it. Please reconsider. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 17:28, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

True, but this was so blurry and out-of-focus that to keep it as in-scope frankly harms Commons' reputation in my opinion. It's not a hard subject, either, and should be trivial to re-shoot more clearly. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:44, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Harassment by Lawboy25

I'm sorry to disturb you with this issue again but I believe things have evolved beyond what is formally acceptable. Here, Lawboy25 is forcing the application of the FPX template in a situation where it no longer applies (as I tried to explain to him); and here he is insulting me. Maybe you can call him to reason before I make a formal complaint in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. Thank you. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 15:17, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of File:Sirimavo Bandaranaike.jpg

Hi! I've just returned from holiday to find that a file I uploaded has been deleted. The request for deletion says that someone else uploaded it, however, and I was never even notified of it. Is it possible that the file that was deleted was placed on top of mine, or did the person who requested the deletion make a mistake? In any case, I would be grateful if you could restore the file Sirimavo Bandaranaike.jpg, as it's sorely missed! Thanks. --Ranveig (talk) 12:48, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

It looks like your version was indeed the one deleted, but to be entirely fair, I'm not sure unilaterally restoring it is such a good idea. You could try bringing it to COM:UNDEL, where other editors will discuss whether or not to restore it. I apologize for the lack of notification. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:09, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
What? Ranveig is the author of this drawing, so why does she have to ‘argue’ to get it restored? --EIRIK\talk 14:02, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Because the deletion review concluded that the file should be deleted. Once you submit an image to Commons it is no longer "yours". –Juliancolton | Talk 14:06, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

VIS namespace

Hallo, http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Valued_image_set:_Wasp_parasitism&diff=38647625&oldid=38647286 All existing VISs are not in the Commons: namespace? --Ikar.us (talk) 12:56, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

And the VISC template produces a red link for the VIS page without namespace.
This seems sensible to me, because a VIS page is a gallery page, like all pages in the main namespace on Commons?
While discussion about VIs and VISs is an internal affair, placed in the Commons namespace, the result is public - I presume this is what the inventors of the process have reasoned?

Hi Juliancolton. I nominated File:Sirimavo Bandaranaike.jpg here on the 23rd of March. A week later, you closed the discussion as Deleted. Hmm ... I didn't know those summaries showed up somewhere (can admins see them?) Not that I mind ...

BTW, my son has been wanting to go out and watch trains out in the Harlem Valley for the last couple of weekends, so I've been getting some of the pics I wanted from there (Tenmile River, upper waters of Fishkill Creek (but not the source yet), the Oswego Meeting House (easily the most remote NRHP listing accessible by car in Dutchess County) etc.) but not all. So, I still do mean to put a list together so we can do a photo safari one of these weekends. Daniel Case (talk) 16:45, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/Drawings by Paolo Steffan

Redrawing a portrait of another image is not in violation of copyright, is it? –Juliancolton | Talk 20:55, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it is. Commons:Derivative works#What is a derivative work?. Since a photograph is a copyrightable work, a redrawing trivially is based upon an existing work. Also, see the musings on Commons:Fan art#Re-drawing does not avoid copyright infringement.--141.84.69.20 00:14, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... it might be a good idea to ask Jameslwoodward (talk · contribs) to explain his vote further before I take any action. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:38, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Please see Commons:Image casebook#Drawings based on photographs. Also discussions like Commons:Village pump/Archive/2007Dec#Wrongly decided deletion debates? are instructive. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 06:38, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

I apparently misunderstood the dr -- my vote was based on the assumption that the question was who made the drawings.

I understand now that User:141.84.69.20 is asserting that these were drawn from photographs. If that is correct, then they may be derivative works and therefore copyvio -- it depends on how close to the photo the drawing is. The statement at Commons:Image_casebook#Drawings based on photographs,

"Drawings based on several photos are derivative works of all of them"

is a little too strong -- it says, in effect, that you must actually have seen the subject in person to make a drawing free from copyvio, because otherwise it would be derivative of all the photos you had ever seen. That's just silly. The standard is actually the same sort of fuzzy standard as for text -- the new work needs to be different enough to not be recognizable as from the same source.

With that in mind, if User:141.84.69.20 would give us links to the photos from which he or she believes these were made, we can make a decision. And, Juliancolton, should we reopen the deletion request and copy all of this there?      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:16, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Image links for the first three images are provided in the DR, too subtly, it seems. Sorry, my bad. I can't say anything about the fourth pic.--141.84.69.20 15:50, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I found these ones, for all it's worth: [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Third and fifth look like it.--141.84.69.20 16:01, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Chalk it up to learning -- when an admin looks at images in a dr, there is an extra pair of links at the end of the name -- "[del][keep]", so the first one looks like this:
File:Andrea Zanzotto- portrait by Paolo Steffan.JPG [del] [keep] [1]
so I didn't even notice your links. For the future, remember that many people on Commons have limited English, so subtlety is not a good thing.
I agree on deleting [2] and [3] without question. [1] is more subtle -- enough of the details are different so I'd be inclined to keep it. I'm a little stronger about keeping [4].      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 16:16, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
The first is still too similar, imo. It's the same pose from the same perspective.--141.84.69.20 16:57, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
As for the fourth, it likely is completely original, since there appears to be Zanzotto's signature on it.--141.84.69.20 19:23, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I've reopened the DR then, since I also misinterpreted the issue. My apologies for the inconvenience. –Juliancolton | Talk 12:03, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of File:Champions-League-2009-finale-ticket.jpg

Hi there. I noticed that you recently deleted File:Champions-League-2009-finale-ticket.jpg. Is there any chance that you could have a look in the deletion logs for the original location of that file on the internet. As I recall, I originally found it on Flickr, but I can't find it there any more, and I seem to have deleted it from my hard drive. I really need the image so I can upload it on Wikipedia. If User:Ahonc had informed me of the nomination in the first place, this wouldn't be a problem, but apparently some people don't have common courtesy these days. By the way, could you possibly explain to me why the image was deleted? I have read COM:DW, but I still don't understand why an image of a ticket is copyrighted. It's possible he or she uploaded it there as well (I sometimes upload my images to both flickr and Commons). –Juliancolton | Talk 18:46, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Possibly, but I can't find it there any more. PeeJay2K3 (talk) 19:34, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
So why was it deleted? I still don't understand why a ticket is covered by copyright. PeeJay2K3 (talk) 22:21, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
It violates COM:DW because it is not simple text, but includes logos that are likely copyrighted. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:14, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Do you know of any way that this could be avoided? An image of the ticket would be very useful to the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final article on Wikipedia, but if the image is not free and cannot be uploaded here, it is not likely that it will be able to be used under Fair Use either. PeeJay2K3 (talk) 16:43, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Not that I can think of, unfortunately. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:00, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Rename rights

Thanks for this, Julian. Now I don't have to go through the irritating RfA process :D Huntster (t @ c) 08:25, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Sure, no worries. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:13, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Help!

Hi, Julian. As I said in discussion page, there is an offer of getting POTY featured in the 21 June edition of the Signpost in my talk page. I tried to answer the interview questions for POTY2009 organizers making a draft in my talk page, but it is REALLY hard for me to answer (or even fully understand) all the questions (I'm en-2, indeed!). Will you answer the interview questions here or improve and post my draft? Thanks. --miya (talk) 01:35, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

I'd be happy to help. I will add some answers later today. Thank you for the notice! Although, I think you're closer to en-4. :) –Juliancolton | Talk 14:15, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Done; what do you think? :) –Juliancolton | Talk 21:09, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Beautiful! It's far better than I imagined! Thanks you, Julian!--miya (talk) 04:33, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

My old account

My only other account was Joe Chill. One of the three images were deleted by my request. It appears that creating a new account wasn't such a bad idea now that it gave me a good track record. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea at first. Joe Chill 2 (talk) 19:37, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, although this shows that you only uploaded two (unless a third one was completely annihilated from the servers). –Juliancolton | Talk 19:38, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Ah. I figured out the problem. I gave the image to Innotata to upload: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gymnothorax_moringa_illustration.jpg. In that case, I didn't just embarrass myself. Joe Chill 2 (talk) 19:42, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Is it possible for someone like me to pass? I don't know how much experience is needed. On Wikipedia for adminship (Yes, I know that it's very different), I got voted down because I'm a deletionist despite my experience. If it's not in any likelihood for me pass, I'll gladly remove my request. Joe Chill 2 (talk) 19:52, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
I think most folks will expect a bit more experience—especially in light of potential copyright issues—before supporting your request. No harm in letting it run, however, since we could always use the help. –Juliancolton | Talk 19:54, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for your responses. The Signpost issue is finally up. Here is the finished article.Nilotpal42 20:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for conducting the interview. Hope to see you involved in next year's POTY! –Juliancolton | Talk 20:13, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
