Be careful! You uploaded Dalila and Erick pictures and categorised them as tropical depressions. PLEASE remember to change the categories when needed. ALSO - MORE IMPORTANTLY - please link DIRECTLY to the image page instead of just the NRL homepage. The point of giving a source is so that people can verify the licensing. Question

Hi. As you've probably noticed, I've been trying to help out with the most recent advisories for tropical cyclones. Please don't replace this image with newer updates, instead upload the new image under a new file name. The new images aren't a minor tweak, they show completely different information. Constantly updating a single file creates a very awkward situation. For example, for projects like Wikinews it is essential that changes to images are kept to a minimum. The image used on a news article shouldn't be updated and rather should reflect the current information at the time. This will no doubt create problems elsewhere since people may be using this image to reference a particular time and date rather. I am quite unsure as to the best way to proceed with this issue at the moment. I am also deeply worried that there will be many of examples of this problem. Adambro (talk) 15:52, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Please help replace this outdated license

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Season track map question

Hey Keith,

Lycaenidae

Hello Keith That's nice work on Swainson. What are your future plans? It would be great if you could upload more of the plates from Hewitson's Illustrations Diurnal Lepidoptera eg. [ [1] ].I did a few to illustrate Lycaenidae stubs(getting the currently accepted names from Funet or considering valid in global lep index at least a guide to the accepted name)but have no further plans for the moment.Robert aka Notafly (talk) 19:23, 10 April 2012 (UTC) ps Note the plates I added are from Illustrations Diurnal Lepidoptera and not from Illustrations of new species of exotic butterflies : selected chiefly from the collections of W. Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale vs Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale

Hi - I realise you may be making these cyclone tracks for many different regions, but really only Americans will understand the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, and most Australians simply can't do the arithmetic. In Australia, we are used to the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale which (IOHO) more accurately describes the nature as well as the impact, and is also more capable of handling "super"-cyclones.

Hello Keith,
You really are doing a great job on commons: adding references, list of sub taxon...
There is a tool, that could help you with that: WikipediaBioReferences.
You type a taxon name + enter, it searches 100 famous web sites, and returns WikiCommons syntax containing:

• references like {{AlgaeBASE genus}}, {{FishBase family}}, {{IUCN}}...
• list of subtaxa out of theses sites: {{Species}}, {{Genera}}, {{Taxa}}...
• {{VN}}
• Some interwiki
• ...

If you want to test it, I will help you. Its free, english, simple, java based.

I don't know if you are shy, or if I should talk to you on en:User_talk:Keith_Edkins.

I created {{AnimalBase species}}, {{AnimalBase genus}}, {{AnimalBase family}} and {{AnimalBase taxon}} for you with their documentation.

I have a bit of an issue: if {{AnimalBase genus}} takes a genusId, I cannot propose its speciesList as speciesList requires taxongenus.

In details:

• There are 4 taxonGenus Acicula.
• The valid Acicula has 884 for genusId and 289 for taxonGenusId (taxonGenus describes the original description of the taxon)
• The list of species only takes a taxongenus

Do you mind checking the url.

Category:Mimicry in Butterflies (book)

Hello. Reginald Punnet died 47 years ago (in 1967). The book was published in the UK and will be in public domain in the state of origin only in 2038 (!). The only reason for these plates not to be copyvio can be the fact that the photographer was other person than Punnet. I appreciate your contribution, but can nothing with the problem. I don't understand what is happening here. It appears that Timrazzall has overwritten my photo with an unprovenanced one which doesn't correspond to the file name - and then nominated it for deletion! Neither photo is, so far as I can see, a duplicate photo, merely another photo of the same person as File:Key Jane-BonhamCarter.png. I would like it reverted to my photo and retained, please. It would be of great help, if you would add a link to the source book page while uploading the pictures of a book. It is much easyer to retrieve additional information about the picture when the exact page is given. Redundant Categorization in São Luís (Maranhão)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
