Tottenham edit

I wasn't paying attention and missed that you had taken these photos! I made a reluctant decision to skip Tottenham on my last trip through the area and thought it would be years before someone would get out there to get some photos. Seems it was more like 3 months. Great photos and a good selection of subjects. Cheers, Mattinbgn/talk 11:12, 3 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Lankiveil!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Re: Ga / Gl edit

I took a look at the edit you were referring to. I'm honestly not sure what was going on in my head at the time. You're certainly right that it's not Irish. The only three languages I generally write descriptions in are English, German and Spanish. I'm not familiar enough with Galician to say where it holds up in that dialect, but it definitely holds up in good old Castilian Spanish so I went ahead and tagged it "es". Thanks for bringing this to my attention; I apologize for the confusion. –Cg-realms (talkcontribs) 00:35, 11 October 2009 (EDT)

A. E. Roberts edit

Great photos. Kudos for the successful GLAm collaboration. Next time, it'd be nice if the institution supplying the photos also supplied some biographical info about the photographer. Took me quite some time to assemble this. Perhaps he might even be worth a minor Wikipedia article, if only as the father of George Roberts (Qantas engineer). George himself might be worth an article as an Australian aviation pioneer?

Note that his death date opens up an interesting nit-picking copyright question: the photos may not be PD in 70-years-p.m.a. countries that do not follow the rule of the shorter term. Luckily there are only a few of these. In the EU, the photos are PD because the EU does apply this rule of the shorter term for non-EU countries.

Some photos give rise to questions about the photographer's identity. Bert Roberts himself is in File:Bert roberts r.jpg, File:Bert-norm-george-ivy-r.jpg, and in File:Ipswich-photo-society-r.jpg. So, who took these pictures? (The latter in particular cannot even have been taken with his camera, as he is leaning on it.)

Cheers, Lupo 09:53, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ok, so I got the wrong Roberts. I had noticed that George's grandfather also was named A. E. Roberts, but the time frame and in particular this source, which gives 1874-1964, led me to believe that I got the right one. Could you please double-check which one it is? Thanks, Lupo 09:57, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Note: if it was Albert Edward, and that Albert Edward was Albert Edwin's father, then why does he show up in File:Ipswich-ambulance-depot-r.jpg?? And why do they explicitly call him "A. E. Roberts, sen." in that file description? And a final point: I managed to geo-locate File:Brisbane-street-ipswich-r.jpg. It would be nice if the museum (or an Ipswich local) could try to pinpoint more locations. Lupo 10:00, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also note p. 17-5 of the oral history interview with George: "That was purchased here by David Featherby who was in the Salvation Army. After receiving the vehicle here early in 1900, he brought it to the coachworks to be repainted in Salvation Army colours. When that was completed, our father photographed it in Gordon Street and our records show that that was April 1900." (Emphasis added. George's father was Albert Edwin, his grandfather was Albert Edward, c.f. page 17-1 of the same interview.) Possibly they both photographed, but frankly said, I'm entirely unconvinced that it was Albert Edward. The man identified in File:Ipswich-photo-society-r.jpg as "Bert" (presumably the Bert who took all the other pictures) looks younger than 50, and the "senior" identified on File:Ipswich-ambulance-depot-r.jpg doesn't look the same. But what do I know... Lupo 10:28, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
If I was misled, I just can offer in my defense that the QM themselves said on their webpage that "Bert (1874-1964) was the son of prominent Ipswich coach builders, A E Roberts".[1] (Don't know if you can see this link, it's a Google cache link. Found by googling for photo +ipswich +"ae roberts", second hit.) Lupo 12:03, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
However, I must return once more to the "oral history" PDF, in particular the image on p. 17-15. The man on the left with the veston and the black hat is identified as "Bert Roberts". From context, I believe this must be Albert Edwin, father of George. Further men identified are Albert Edwin's brother Leo (I believe that's the man in the background right, no hat, wearing a blacksmith's apron) and Mr. Roberts senior (Albert Edward, left of Leo, behind the carriage). In any case the man identified as "Bert" and whom I believe to be Albert Edwin is clearly the same as the man in File:Bert roberts r.jpg, File:Bert-norm-george-ivy-r.jpg, and in File:Ipswich-photo-society-r.jpg. Hence, if it was actually Albert Edward who took these photos, then the file description at File:Bert roberts R reduced.jpg and at File:Bert roberts r.jpg is completely wrong (it says that he was the photographer), and the use of the image in the QM template would be rather misleading. Lupo 12:03, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I see that you now changed the creator template from Edwin to Edward. Did you take into account that the QM themselves indicated Edwin in their exhibition announcment and on File:Bert roberts r.jpg, and that Edwin is also consistent with the "oral history" document? What's the proof that it was Edward? Sorry to be so sceptical, but if it was Edward, not only did the QM get confused at some point, but also the caption on image 17-15 in the oral history document doesn't make sense anymore. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

DjVu files in Indigenous Australian languages has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Re: Australia electoral divisions map edit

Hello Lankiveil!

First off, I want to thank you for your kind words on my Australian election maps! Im getting lots of good feedback on them, and Ive even started seeing people use my designs for some of their own maps!

I will fully acknowledge that divisions that aren’t normally considered to be “North Brisbane” or “South Brisbane” may not be where some may think it should be. In a perfect world, the maps would be perfect and sectioned off properly for insets. My main goal when making maps it to make them;

  • 1) As regionally accurate as I can possibly make them without compromising the integrity of the map. Meaning I try to not have everything be in multiple insets to show urban areas, otherwise the map would become very convoluted and confusing. Nobody wants to look at a map where mostly everything is in one of many insets. This can be confusing for individuals who are not familiar with the electoral geography of Australia (I say speaking as a Canadian resident).
  • 2) As compact as possible, meaning insets are similar in size for easier viewing and for someone who is scanning the map to find a specific constituency (or division, as they tend to be called in Australia).

I take it you are a Brisbane resident? If so I want you to know I was not trying to make a clear distinction between the northern and southern part of the city/metro area. Basically, I was not trying to offend anyone. When I was making the map, I had to break up the city to make it easier to view on the map. Otherwise, the individual constituencies would have been too small to see on the map, worse considering it is an inset of an urban area.

I know Australia tends to review their electoral boundaries for each election. So when the time comes for Australia to have another election, I will need to remake the map. When I do that, I will take your thoughts into consideration!

If you have any other concerns with the maps, please do not hesitate to message me back and let me know. I want my maps to be as accurate (both geographically and politically) as possible.

Thank you so much for your concerns.
