## Tip: Categorizing imagesEdit

Hello, Mattythewhite!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

## File:Joe Lewis.pngEdit

File:Joe Lewis.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

## File source is not properly indicated: File:Andre Boucaud 1.pngEdit

This media may be deleted. A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Andre Boucaud 1.png, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the content yourself, enter `own` as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, `GFDL` or `Cc-zero` to release certain rights to your work. If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hello Mattythewhite,

could you please move this gallery to a subpage of your userpage? Because of it, it takes quite long to load your userpage, which should be avoided. Thank you. Regards --Rosenzweig δ 23:21, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

## Autopatrol givenEdit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically sighted. This will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to help users watching Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones. Thank you.Érico Wouters msg 12:51, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

## File:Simon Whaley 1.pngEdit

This image on flickr was originally taken in jpg format. All flickr images that were originally in jpg format should be uploaded in .jpg format on WikiCommons rather than .png format because we would get the camera metadata. Also images in jpg format upload faster. Please see this DR and also this DR...where the link to the replacement image in .jpg shows that the flickr account owner puts some information in the camera metadata such as his full name and the image license. This is for your information. Please try to upload your future images in .jpg format rather than .png format if you can. Its your decision. No, I won't take any action against you. I just tried to show why .jpg format is better than .png, that's all. This is another image in .jpg format where the camera metadata not only names the camera model used but also the name of the flickr account owner.

•  Comment : Of course, if the original image at the flickr account was taken in png format, then you would have to upload the image on Commons in png format. Most flickr accounts use .jpg today. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:45, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
•  Comment : In response to your question to me, what you have uploaded in png format, just leave it in png format. I don't know why you would have a problem uploading flickr images in jpg format if the original flickr image was taken in jpg format. You would normally crop the flickr version but save it in a jpg format rather than a png format. If you have a problem, perhaps Admin Lymantria could help. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:32, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
• Sure, no problem. Good luck, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:48, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
