Hillary Clinton Photo

Can you get that photo back? Or at least get it to me? I need it extremely bad!

Sorry, I don't know what image you're referring to. You have never uploaded anything. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:03, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Image:Britney Spears 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.jpg

Hi, could you re-look at Image:Britney Spears 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.jpg. I re-nominated (sorry about the formatting). It seems fairly obvious to be a screen cap from the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. It's hard to imagine MTV would allow free images of the performance. An independent photographer might get a photo from various photo-ops before/after her performance, but it's unlikely he snapped it during the show. --Rob 22:34, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Ahh, yes. It is indeed a screencap, and is deleted. My reasoning previously was misguided. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:53, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Mike. I appreciate the quick response. --Rob 22:59, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mike, Could you help me to understand why this image would be deleted from commons, but not from w:Image:Conceptmap.gif? I had been trying to use the image here v:Concept mapping. I am figuring perhaps I need to redraw and modify, then upload to commons. Or I could upload to wv, but I don't see much point in that. Appreciate your thoughts. -- Jtneill - Talk 17:22, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

The image is not free enough for inclusion at Commons. You are welcome to provide us with a free version, or you can possibly upload the original from Wikipedia to Wikiversity. I would of course prefer that a free version be created and uploaded to Commons. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 19:26, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

2008_Hewa_Bora_Airways_crash.jpg

Hi, what made you think a UN photo is a copyvio?LeadSongDog 21:40, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Only the following are in the Public Domain: Official records, UN documents with UN symbol, and public inofrmation materials about the UN activities. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:45, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
The photo was taken by an Indian army unit of the Mission of the UN in Congo (MONUC) deployed to Goma, and distributed through the UN public information system using (iirc) en:Radio Okapi. See en:2008 Hewa Bora Airways Crash for a long list of citations.LeadSongDog 17:08, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't believe that's sufficient. Just because they distributed it doesn't make it an official record, a document with the UN symbol, nor public information materials about the UN activities. You → COM:UNDEL please. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:40, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I've been reexamining the article history and the cited refs, but can't find where it came from to confirm my above recollection. I may be in error. Is the metadata still available for review?
If you confirm an email I can provide it to you. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:45, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Done.
My recollection was wrong. Found it anyhow at this UN News cite. 07:17, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
So do you still have an issue with it?LeadSongDog 21:36, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't see how that makes it PD. Again, please take it to COM:UNDEL. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

DR template subst'ing

Hey Mike, I was wondering if you had an opinion on what DRBot's doing (example). Even if subst'ing vote templates helps, I don't think subst'ing Commons:Deletion requests/box helps at all since it's not included. I was actually thinking of sending my bot in there to remove these templates all together because many times they are left out of the {{delh}}/{{delf}} part and makes our archives messy. This would only be for closed discussions, of course, where the template is not needed anymore. See Commons talk:Deletion requests#Cleaner archives. Thanks! Rocket000 16:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Giggy's RfB

G'day

I just wanted to say a huge thanks for your support in my RfB. It just closed, and I'm now a bureaucrat. If you ever want to discuss any of my actions, as a 'crat, admin, or plain old user, please don't hesitate to leave a note on my talk page.

Cheers for the meta-related comment, it's been taken on board. Cheers, giggy (:O) 10:51, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

User-editable CC template?

Hi, after a few talks on the theme on COM:VP, and after being convinced on advantages of "CC-by" towards "Attribution", I started to design a more intelligent user-editable CC-template (well, the developer+programming-work would be done by Rocket000).

I now learn that CC and Attribution ARE the same, such template therefore would not be of any use.

In case you're interested, I please invite you to talk on User talk:WeHaWoe/TestSite#Looks like bad luck for the project 8( for kind of brainstorming. Best, Wolfgang, WeHaWoe 09:34, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Passports

Hi Mike, I hope you don't mind I'd like to just get a second opinion from a sysop here before I consider nominating a load of images for deletion. See this and this. With a few exceptions, these are copyrighted by governments, no? Are you aware of any precedents for deleting these? zzuuzz 22:18, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

My understanding is that the coat of arms must be free, as the text on the covers would be {{pd}}. If there is copyrighted content on the cover then the media has to go. So for most of those it seems to me that the COA is free, and the images are fine. But that may warrant checking. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:08, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Question

Hey, I was wondering if it would be possible to modify the MediaWiki:Gadget-modrollback.js script to do something similar after deletions. Could it be changed so that after deleting an image it bypasses the "Action Complete" page and skips directly to the "undelete" page for the same page/category/image that was just deleted? When dealing with vandals, copyvios, and new users I end up having to visit the undelete page afterwards to find the link to the user's talk/contribs, but with a gadget that forwards you automatically it would take out an extra page loading and would save a lot of time.

I'm clueless when it comes to javascript or I'd change it myself, apologies for bothering you with this! If it's not possible or too much work that's quite fine, I'm mostly curious to know if it's achievable :) Many thanks, -- Editor at Largetalk 22:06, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm sure it is... whether I can do it is another question :) I mostly stole that particular script from someone else, but I take a stab at it later next week, probably. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:19, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Some heading

Hola Mike.

I don't think I have ever emailed you. However, you are welcome to add this to Wikipedia and Commons provided it is freely licensed and an email to confirm permissions has been sent to OTRS. You may upload the images now - please add {{otrs pending}} to the image so others know that you will be sending a permissions email for confirmation.

Userbox...

Hello Mike,
I started the Village pump section with the memory of 2005's talks, and the believe that users opinions would be the same : opposed to user boxes.
But this talk show clearly that the 2005 Commons, and the 2008 Commons are really different, many users now tolerate userbox, then this issue is un-manageable : talk about that will start an user box war... the worst thing ! [huge waste of time].

So, even if I still oppose user box, and support the opinion that « only user boxes with technical and language skills are desired, and that political, religious etc. are not desired. »', you made the good choice by closing this useless talk. Yug (talk) 11:43, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm glad we agree.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 12:25, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Image:Bih Stan 1991.GIF

I found your comment at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Bih Stan 1991.GIF.

I'm accussed of POV-pushing by Petri Krohn and Leoboudv. user:Leoboudv even said that I' trying to replace 1991 map with present-situation map, which is rediculous, since today's map doesn't look nowhere near the left map in the table. You obviuosly reacted based on their comments, which is plain wrong.

Map is plain wrong. Some municipalities, without bosniak willages in 1991, has green color. Some croat municipalities with few non-Croat willages, are uniformly blue. Wrong patches of color are 'everywere. Guy who did it wasn't POV-pusher. He was just slumpy. And, because of his slumpyness, wrong data are all over the wiki. What should we do about it? Ignore it? Not my idea of wikipedia.

Re: "gay"

My language is from an environment of hackers. Software is written by who? My language also comes from United States colleges and high schools and from the last few decades. I find it interesting that it is a problem here.

I made a splash for GIMP about how GIMP is "not just for Pansy's"; is that a less controversial term? And how much are those who are active at wikimedia having to answer to people who are overly sensitive about words?

I ask these things because I perhaps do not completely understand the culture here (recently) and do understand those things I listed here; not to be controversial or accusatory, yet.

If it is users "pretending" to be homosexual, I suggest they need to meet some from the actual community before attempting to protect them. -- carol (talk) 01:13, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

If you mean to say "passive aggressive" then use that phrase. Associating that quality with homosexuals (or indeed any other demographic) is actually very offensive. This is not a matter of Commons' culture, but rather common decency.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:20, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
None of the homosexual people I know are "gay" in the way that hackers and young critics use the term, and they know that. I suggest that that word has already transformed into describing an undesirable environment which has nothing to do with gender choices. Typing the psychology created phrase "passive aggressive" makes me "feel gay" which is one of those environmental conditions that discourages the "real people", like me. -- carol (talk) 01:25, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
No, you are confusing the meaning and the issue. I do not know whether you are doing so deliberately, but I've asked you stop once; I'll do so again. Please take care with your words; please take care with your actions. Continually posting cryptic messages is infuriating to many - this shouldn't be a surprise. I'm glad these two have been rather less cryptic than most, but I understand fully the ire you've drawn recently. Please heed my advice.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:37, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

COMBotBot

subtitled: What are you good for?

First of all, it is all I could do the other day when I was having problems to not go to where you were writing on Herby's talk page and simply type "khowtow" to see if it could be done here.

Second of all, I have no idea where to put my outline for this bot and could write it myself but then that is the same situation I had with GIMP where I managed the rewrite of the web site mechanism with not too much help from the older developers who were there who were just hanging out. GNOME is now a tragedy as near as I can glean; I think some of this had to do with that mistake I made. I also do not know if you are "new" here or "old" here. I do know that that web site mechanism functions so elegantly that the next person to use it was unable to mention the ease encountered in making the extremely ugly web site that is there now (my opinion).

So, what are you good for and where do I put COMBotBot. Please let it be more than the reliefful feeling of typing zhowtow (or whatever form of it that occurs to me next time)?

Also, "put it up your ass" is not the wrong way to respond to me if this is your honest feeling about it. -- carol (talk) 01:39, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

I am old here. "Put it up your ass" is never an acceptable response. The rest doesn't concern me.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:41, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
What do you do here? It will be good to know, I think. -- carol (talk) 02:14, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
My contributions and logs are available to all.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:28, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Interesting situation here in the last day or so. I do not have enough information to be making a guess that becomes a fact, however, the feeling is that I am being pushed into the United States academic schedule. The problem with that is that it is an interface which is supposed to be for volunteers (and the real hackers are not so interested in the public school schedules without additional reason) and also, I am not being paid by those same academic institutions. In fact, I think it would be far better for those same institutions to either 1)only use teachers who can manage a classroom of students who have recently injested ecstacy while still following the rules against corporal punishment or 2)a well deserved apology to me by those people and others and reinstatement back into the world I was not doing so badly in.
Also, if I were going to be censoring (limiting restriction) a web site at the public school access points, probably commons would be first due to some the non-restricted content I have seen in the Recent Uploads and while cleaning out other categories. There was an interesting discussion of a well known pornqueen storing her images here. I suspect that any has-been media (not wikimedia) person who uses this project for image storage has not only "jumped the shark" but was not even in a pool that had sharks when they "jumped it". Almost every reason for putting such photographs here instead of where they belong has a similar idea about it from me. When I first started being active here, there was a suggestion or a hint that my web site had been censored for public school access. If that is the actual case, the public schools need to catch up and review contents before applying such a strong and easily misused tool.
I take this as an invitation to look at what you have done and can do. I will do so when I stop seeing outlines of idiots. In all fairness, the first people I encountered via internet connection were head and shoulders above me using a scripting language that when I had been in college was only a theoretical logic proving machine. I have long since stopped looking at this and other interfaces (especially since I have been relocated in life) for an intelligence and ability that was that great -- but even the average amounts and the ability to not always be manipulative and play-acting would be really an improvement.
People, contributors, users should be interested in making contributions and logs which are not "perfect" but the owner of it can still be proud of -- without the use of version controlled assistance to feel good about it.
Thanks. The amount of text placed here now is still only a little of the depth that those few words you wrote contain. -- carol (talk) 23:38, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Commons Scope - Pdf and Djvu files

I have added some text dealing with these based on the discussion on the talk page. Users are by no means unanimous about which files should be allowed, and I have tried to follow the majority opinion. Thus, the suggestion is that if a Pdf or Djvu file is educationally useful even to a single other Wiki it should be kept. Would you like to comment before this page goes live? Please do so at the bottom of the talk page. Regards, --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:52, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

The template was substituted, so it wasn't removed when the image was kept. I've removed it now.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:27, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Scripts

Hey Mike, I see you're creating some more gadgets some from my monobook.js I can fix some of the options, like MediaWiki:Gadget-blockoptions.js if you want, as the options there aren't really the ones we will use. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 10:10, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I tweaked the options there a bit already, but please feel free to change them to something more suitable for Commons.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 12:51, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

File:Toothed Whale Physical Characteristics.svg

Hi, you deleted this image awhile ago, stating it was a copyvio. I noticed this because I followed a link from Image:Toothed Whale and Baleen Whale Physical Characteristics it.svg, which contains the same image as the deleted one. Normally, I would simply delete this but the other part of the image made me come here instead. It's drawn in the same style and very likely from the same source. The image is also used in Image:Mysticeti esquema es.svg along with it's translations: 1, 2, 3, 4. I don't know why the first one was a copyvio so hopefully you'll know what to do with these. Thanks. Rocket000(talk) 14:52, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately I can't find the URL, although this was not pointed out to me in IRC. The diagram itself (but not the labelling, IIRC) was a copy of a diagram on a university marine biology lab's website. I will dig some more & see if I can find the URL. If not, I suspect an undel req would succeed.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:03, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Copyvio - Image:Building destroyed al-shifa.jpg

Regarding the image in question, I cited the copyvio template with this source. The image in taken from there which does not have an acceptable CC license. -- ADuran (talk) 03:47, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks - in the future please be sure to supply the source or reason as the first parameter in the template: {{copyvio|reason or source}}  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 12:06, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Question

You eliminated texte from an image of User:Jjargoud; did you see that he has a whole series of images with texte? If you have the skill and courage... Havang(nl) (talk) 18:47, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

<frowny face>
Yes, I can take a look.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 19:32, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks on behalve of User Jjargoud. Havang(nl) (talk) 08:55, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Many of these will be difficult to do. I suggest marking images as applicable, as this will be a long-term task. I'll do what I can as well.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:13, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Copyright violations

Hey Mike,

Could you please provide me with the correct documentation for properly categorizing articles, and in response to the copyright violations, some of the images that I uploaded were pictures given by the family to the media for public re-use and viewing such as this one, which I used in this one, and others were painting by 'Gustave Dore' drawn over 100 years ago, which lie in the public domain. Cheers --Fatal!ty (talk) 07:58, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

We don't have articles on Commons, so categorizing them can't be done :) But you can categorize images - try using HotCat; you can enable it through the Gadgets tab of Special:Preferences. For the public domain ones, that fact should be sufficient. For the ones re-used by the media, might as well send an email to OTRS at permissions-commons wikimedia.org  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 09:56, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I'm user Jjargoud. I live on Reunion Island et I'm newcomer on wikimedia (and wikispecies). I wanted to propose some of my pictures to complete unillustrated pages, but I've lost the original ones : I just kept the thumbs pictures with watermarks which I've used for a personnal website on mascarine fauna <http://faune.mascarine.pagesperso-orange.fr/> Thanks for cleaning some of them : I'll try from now to use clean ones...

No problem, I try to do a few from Category:Images with watermarks every so often.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:11, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Delete images

your post

  • Ok, I don't know how to do that. Will try it next time. I see that you are an admin. Can you just delete these images...they are all improperly licensed copies of fair use images on wikipedia: 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6
--TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 02:57, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Instructions are located at Help:Mass nominations and are reasonably easy to follow. At the moment, I'm busy doing other things, but an administrator will process those deletion requests when appropriate.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:44, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

special request

Could you look into restoring an article at English wikipedia for me? -- carol (talk) 20:06, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

No. I am not an administrator there.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:09, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Is it something that could be accomplished via meta wiki? It was a cool article; the deletion was instigated by people not involved with similar articles there. -- carol (talk) 20:18, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
That is not what meta is for.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:20, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
It is kind of a sad thing when the "admin" there are willing to admit to not having the courage to do the right thing. I read "stick their neck out" but it should not have been an issue like that. The culmination of all of that is such a sad read. I should be glad if they make it so that being an admin somewhere else is considered to be too much responsibility to spread to other projects (like this one).
Kind of sad that being a trusted user is not a prerequisit and reminds me of when I worked for the USGov and the workers employed by them always had reality problems with the elected people.
Does it bother you (I see in your recent voting habits) that a "diefied" character from English wikipedia is going to be an admin here? -- carol (talk) 20:25, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Depends who it is.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:32, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
So deification is a non-issue to you or is it important along with the "who" aspects of this question? -- carol (talk) 20:36, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Deification is always an issue, but circumstances matter.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:07, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for talking about this. My experience at en.wikipedia was really very sad and the problems I encountered there and the "canned" comments made by the administrators there reminded me of something I read once that made me laugh. Another problem was that people skills that I learned in real life failed. En.wikipedia should be just an encyclopedia and commons should be just the image server for them. Are the administrative tasks here so backlogged that there needs to be more admin?
There was an interesting little method displayed on Siebrands talk page where I wrote about an admin who made a mistake and they wrote about not making that same mistake in their next administrative action. Is this typical for management here? It is reflective of what I learned was the category management at English wikipedia -- where the second thing that needs to be categorized (or the second contributor) is expected to make the category. I think this should fail. It doesn't include knowledge and it is a process and processes are not in possession of the ability to think. Do you think it would be possible to start to "defrock" any administrators who exhibit this kind of behavior here as that procedure came from English wikipedia which is just a horrible place for all of the wrong reasons. -- carol (talk) 01:59, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

If you want a comment on a specific set of events, you'll have to provide links to the appropriate information. You can't just have opinions on things; you actually have to know.

My experience on enwiki was sad as well. As for administration here: Yes, we do need more admins, in general. It is not an emergency, but more capacity is constantly needed. Removing the sysop-bit of any administrator is as simple as gaining consensus among the community to do so. I have no opinion on categorization specifically.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:43, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

A belated whatever (thank you, thumbs up, wwjd, tty -- whatever is a positive thing to you), you were very very helpful, patient, answering weird questions and so on. Not in the job description I think. -- carol (talk) 23:28, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Coming from a small wiki, being helpful is in my blood, I suppose.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:04, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
