Please help replace this outdated license edit

Hi,

Help needed with categorizing some racing images edit

I uploaded several images from the 2009 SCCA National Runoffs; they can be found at Category:Sports Car Club of America. I don't understand Formula racing. Thank you for your comment and contributions of precious images. I found the event (Category:2009 SCCA National Championship Runoffs) was held with various races in mixed-categories. Well done - creating a new category for the event was right on target. You're right, the car were in different classes. I meant categorize each image individually. I uploaded the winner in each class even though I photographed most of the field. These pictures were taken in the final day in an event which took 3 or 4 days. WTCC cars edit

Hello again and thanks for the Toledo! I wonder if you have any images of any of these WTCC cars:

  • Ford Focus (used in 2005)
  • Ford Focus ST170 (used in 2005)
  • Honda Civic Type-R (used at Monza in 2005)
  • Peugeot 407 (used in 2005 and 2006)
  • Toyota Altezza (used in Macau in 2005)
  • Toyota Corolla T-Sport (used at Brno in 2006 and Valencia in 2007)
  • Volvo S60 Flexifuel (used at Anderstorp in 2007. I was there, but I took no images.)

It can be hard to find these, because most of these cars were only used in some races.

And, Alfa Romeo 156 GTA in 2005-2006... I never even saw those cars unfortunately. I has taken WTCC pictures only when I went to circuits to watch the races.

Images of japanese and samurai items edit

Can you explain why you are removing images from the categories they are in and putting them in different categories? Do you have any knowledge of the subject? What is this category you made "Nanbandō" there is no such word, it is two words "Nanban" meaning foreign etc and "dō" meaning chest armor, also the category "Tōseigusoku", there is no such word, it is "Tōsei" modern and "gusoku" meaning armor.     • Hello, were are you getting your information from? you made a category "Menbō" go do a search under "Menbō" and see what you find, and then search under "menpo" and see what you find, you are not naming the categories properly. Did you do any research before you started naming categories? You need to go back and rename all the improperly named categories or if you do not have any knowledge of samurai armor then ask someone who does have some knowledge. Badly named categories and removing images from well known names into obscure named categories will make it hard for people to find images. Thank you for your comment. "Tōseigusoku" (ja:当世具足 "'Gusoku' of current era") is a type of Japanese armour which developed in Sengoku and Azuchi-momoyama period. I made this category because most of famous Japanese armours is classified into this kind. And, I think these armors should be distinguished from other former armours because of its importance (the people at that time gave the name for the armour because of same reason). "Nanbandō" (ja:南蛮胴) is a type of of "Tōseigusoku". As shown in the name of Nanban, it has Nanban-style. I distinguished because this was also important as an example of Nanban culture (this type of armour is used as an example of Nanban culture in history textbooks of elementary school in Japan).--Morio (talk) 17:17, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

      • Hello, you made a category "Jinbaori" well that fine, but you removed the category "clothing of Japan" from my image, why did you do that...Jinbaori is also "clothing of Japan" and you did not add "clothing of Japan" to the category "Jinbaori" You are making it harder for people to find images when you do not add the proper categories to new categories. Is English your first language? Because this statement is wrong "English: Jinbaori is a tipe of haori, one of the Japanese short coats with sleeves, which a high-ranking samurai can wear over his armor. It is "type" not "tipe" Also your text is in the present tense "which a high-ranking samurai can wear over his armor" The proper text would be something like this...." The jinbaori is a type of sleeveless war coat designed to be worn over the armor of the samurai" Were did you read that the jinbaori was worn by high-ranking samurai only, and that is is a form of haori? You need to look for references before making statements, do a google book search first before making categories so you can find the correct name and the most popular usage, not an unknown name. You need to rename all the categories that you miss named, "guskou" means armor and is always used seperate from any other word, such as "kusari" meaning chain and "gusoku" meaning armor, not "kusarigusoku". Please do not become too hot. I deleted categories of the files only to avoid overflow of upper categories (Category:Jinbaori is under Category:Haori which is under Category:Traditional clothes of Japan which is under Category:Clothing of Japan, therefore I think this edit does not cause problem). And, English is NOT my first language therefore I often make a mistake in writing. I appreciate you if you would correct it.     • Hello, I am sorry if I seem hot but I have had some problem lately with some images being removed from categories. Making Sub categories is a good idea, I like the idea of Tōseigusoku etc..but the images of armor should still be left in the "Armour of Japan" category as many people do not have a good understanding of samurai armor and need a general category to look at....at least for now.. I think that removing images from the category "Samurai" is a good idea after giving it some thought as long as there are clearly understood sub categories...I am glad to have some help and would appreciate some help from someone who is interested in the subject.
  • I hope you do not mind that I redirected "menbō" to "menpo" as that is really way more used, understood, and searched for. As for "Tōseigusoku"..."Tōsei gusoku" would be the correct way to spell it. It should really be redirected as Tōsei gusoku is only known by people with some kind of knowledge and they would be spelling it that way. I have made categories "suneate, haidate, manchira, manju no wa, nodowa,dou" and I redirected to "dou" ..both terms are used but "dou" is used more then "dō" in recent times.
    • I am trying to make sure that these images are easy for people to find when searching online..example...Moving images of "Jinbaori" into "jinbaori" is good, but many people have never seen a "jinbaori" so they would not know what to search for and they do not know "haori" either..The same for "jingasa" and some other items that the average person would not have seen before. If you are going to remove all the pictures into "jingasa" or "jinbaori" then those categories should be under "category:samurai" and "category:Armour of Japan" as well as any other category that might make it easier to find such as "category:clothing of Japan" I hope you understand!!samuraiantiqueworld.com (talk) 10:09, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your comments. I think it is no problem if you change the category names to more appropriate names. But I worry your idea of the commons category is different from Wikimedia's category policy. Please refer to m:Help:Categories#Category considerations
If you see categories of the Commons (ex. Category:Buildings, Category:Sports, Category:Clothing, etc.), you would find that the Commons categories are basically operated by this policy. Therefore, even if I do not edit the categories of your files, I think someone would edit them sooner or later.
I can understand there is some truth in what you say on categories of each file, but, if all contributors upload files by the same idea as you, the upper categories should overflow with thousands of files (the Commons policy is worrying about it).   • I agree with you and of course eventually things in the "samurai" "Armour of Japan" categories will have suitable sub categories and the sub categories will be linked together in a manner which would allow people to find related images easily. I think that the "Samurai" category can be removed from the armor images and I added the "armor of Japan" category to the "Samurai" category and vice versa so anyone looking at these categories will be able to find related images. I also made new categories for the Japanese Weapons which had no category "Kusarigama, manriki, chigriki, jutte etc" and those images can be removed from the "samurai" category also. as long as the sub galleries are linked to the related galleries "samurai" "weapons of Japan" and "Armour of Japan" in a way that makes it easy for people to find the images I am ok with taking the images from categories and putting them all in sub categories. Maybe a new sub category is needed "Gusoku (suit of Japanese armour}" for the full suits of armor? Thank you so much for your kind comment;-) I live in Tokyo, and, fortunately, there is no serious problem for me, my family and friends. I turned round east of Tokyo on these two days, and I saw the road maintenance people, policemen, firemen and emergency medical people, railway people (they restored the very complex railway system only at half a day!) and retail store people have been doing very good working. Then, I do not feel the anxiety in the restoration of Tokyo.

Thank you for your comment. The interwiki links in the "category" (Category:Jacques_Villeneuve) were linked to "pages" in other projects (such as en:Jacques_Villeneuve). Therefore, I deleted them. Fair enough. Personally, most interwikis in Commons categories point to Wikipedia articles - I think common practice shows that people generally believe that to be more helpful than linking to Wikipedia categories. Thank you for all of your help with categorizing motorsports images. I noticed that your category improvement to File:DSR24MatCutterRoadAmerica2009SCCANationalRunoffs.jpg. There are a lot of images in Category:SCCA National Championship Runoffs that I didn't know where to categorize. I'm not very well-versed in sports car racing and the letter abbreviations don't mean much to me except if the announcer explains their meaning. Would you look through the images that I took at the Sunday events in 2009, 2010, and 2011 to give appropriate categories? I probably have images in more racing classes that what I uploaded here. Dear Morio! Some days ago subcategories by date for Wernher von Braun were created by you. Honestly, I don't consider this an improvement. So far, all images in this category were sorted by date using sortkeys giving a good overview over his life. I do agree, splitting into date subcategories is necessary for persons with hundrets of images, but in this case with only around 110 it does more harm than good. I am aware that there are ways of displaying all images of subcategories using software from the toolserver but most user don't know that. I'm in favour of restoring the former situation. As I remember it around 1924 they'd have done anything to sell something - see the Japanese truck which if the date is correct was made about the time of the total financial collapse but aside from this new-to-me photo (above) I know nothing of real trucks. That truck's radiator could not have been used on a car, could it? Certainly they did make aero engines. The suggestion has been made that you had not completed your planned amendments to the categories of Wolseley vehicles.

Category:Off-road racing status edit

I am dissatisfied with this structure and I want to discuss some changes to give a basic organization. First, is rallying considered off-road racing? I usually thought of it as primarily on-road with a little off-road. Also, I think it should be broken down into its specific genres - desert, short-course, stadium and I suspect there are more. Perhaps hill and rock climbing are more genres. Then each genre should be subdivided by race tracks aka racing circuits, drivers, sanctioning body (mainly short-course), and a few major advertisers (Red Bull, Monster). I saw this change and I don't agree that short-course racing is rallying. Perhaps you felt it was the closest option but I disagree. I have very few knowledge in off-road racing though I watch daily digests of the Dakar Rally every year. For now, I think it is enough if the files are categorized for every event because the files about off-road racing are not very huge yet.
Then, I think that the following matter can be considered as a standard of classification though there may be a defect:
  • Location (country or continent) *I worry this categorization is slightly troublesome for off-road racing because there are cross-country events.
  • Time ("by year" category) *When the number of files/categories is very huge
  • Venue (or "Type of venue")
  • Cross-country (rally raid races)
  • Stadium and short-course (the events in which the venues have fixed) *I don't know whether these will be correctly distinguishable.
  • Event (or "Type of event")
  • Vehicle
  • "by event" or "by type of vehicle"
  • People
  • Drivers and riders
  • Other things; "advertisements" (major ads such as Monster and Red Bull) etc.

Thank you for your comment. You did not add a wrong category. I made two edits.
  • I included the category "Ships by pennant number" into the template "Category definition: Ships by pennant number". It made it unnecessary to add the category "Ships by pennant number" to each category. Then, I think we will be able to save effort for another edit of "Ships with pennant number X" categories.
  • I made the "Ships with pennant number X" categories to come under "Number X on vehicles" categories.

Tower Bridge edit

Hi, The template "TowerBridgeYear" used in the Categories "Category:Tower Bridge in xxxx" is putting the categories in "Category:xxxx in the City of London" this should be changed to "Category:xxxx in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets", I do not think I have sufficient rights to edit the template and don't know how to, can you make this change as I believe you are responsible for creating this template, if not can you tell me where to ask to implement this change? Koenigsegg at Geneva Motor Show 2014 edit

Hello there Morio. I’m afraid I have to disagree with you regarding your categorizing of Koenigsegg at Geneva Motor Show 2014. The nanoFLOWCELL Quant e-Sportlimousine is not a Koenigsegg vehicle. It is a wide spread misunderstanding that the preceding NLV Quant of 2009 was a Koenigsegg vehicle, but it was actually a cooperation between the Swedish super car maker and the Dutch company NLV Solar. That cooperation is now history and the new Quant e-Sportlimousine is a product of nanoFLOWCELL, based in Lichtenstein. The connecting link between NLV Solar and nanoFLOWCELL is their common owner, Nunzio La Vecchia. I have therefore moved the two Quant vehicles to new categories. Hallo Morio, I tried to identify two racecars that you added to Category:Unidentified racing automobiles and Category:1932 Grand Prix of Nîmes. I suppose that this picture was not shot at the 1932 event, but at a much earlier race. I justify that with the 1932 1932 G. P. stats which show that Nrs. 10 ("Mlle Helle-Nice", obviously a pseudonym) and 12 (Louis Trintignant) were Bugatti Type 35C racers. The pictured cars not only look much older (my guess: around 1920); they are definitely not of the same type and also definitely no Bugattis.--Chief tin cloud (talk) 11:56, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comment and attention to the template. I saw the same thing with you and tried to fix the Template:MDcat and Template:YMDcat. Maybe you have seen the templates or category during my editing because I spent long time to find the reason why the category is not working. Then, the "MDcat" template had used the Template:Date to change the names of months (ex. "12" to "December"), and the "Date" template have been changed to disabled in link in past few days or weeks. Well, I think your idea of splitting sub-categories into these categories ► 1890s Wolseley automobiles‎ ► 1900s Wolseley automobiles‎ ► 1910s Wolseley automobiles‎ ► 1920s Wolseley automobiles‎ ► 1930s Wolseley automobiles‎ ► 1940s Wolseley automobiles‎ (why stop at the 1940's?) brings real confusion. You can look up cars of the 1930s etc elsewhere and, if you want to, work your way back to Wolseley.

Hey Morio, can you explain this edit to {{PD-USGov-NASA-AP}}? It somewhat broke the display on description pages, adding the text "ISS" below the template, since the category was removed. Thank you for comment. I moved the pictures taken from the ISS from Category:ISS Crew Earth Observations to Category:Earth photography from the International Space Station. Because I thought that the pictures of "astronauts seeing the earth" and the "photographs of the earth (taken from ISS)" (astronauts' activities) are better to be separated. So, it was necessary to change the template {{PD-USGov-NASA-AP}}. And, I fixed the error of my edit on the template. Template:Indy500year edit

Would it be possible to modify Template:Indy500year so that there is some control over whether it sorts into Category:May XXXX in the United States or Category:May XXXX in Indiana? The latter has been created for some recent years, and it would be very good to be able to sort into the proper category. Thank you for request. I fixed the template. When you or someone create a "May XXXX in Indiana" category, the "XXXX Indianapolis 500" category may NOT be updated right away. Quick question about Austro-Daimler Bergmeister categories edit

You're much more knowledgeable about European automobiles than I am, and I'm wondering about Category:Austro-Daimler Bergmeister and Category:Austro-Daimler ADR Bergmeister. Should they be merged? Or should one be a subcategory of the other? They were previously unrelated, although I have added {{Cat see also}} for now, as they do appear to be (at the least) closely related to each other.
