Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

About image uploading

Thank you for reminding me. It's interesting that why the image can be uploaded and used in various language version of wikipedia but can not in commons.wikimedia. As to zh:長谷川清, even if in Chinese Wikipedia zh:Category:南京大屠杀参与者 (participants to the Nanking Massacre) is added, the article doesn't mention to his participation, and there are no source that prove it. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 21:11, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Please remember that Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Though 长谷川's role in Nanjing Massacre is not mentioned in a wikipedia article, it does'nt spare his guilt. Wikipedia is not a reliable source, but Wikipedia is not field for propagandas. First of all, you have to edit articles of wikipedias (English, Chinese, Japanese etc...), and then shall we solve disputes in Commons. And do you know notable survivors of the Nanking Massacre ? If you consider "Japanese who participated in Nanjing Massacre" as appropriate, this name also looks fine to me. But I have to reject being criticized as a propaganda-purposed editor. Photos taken during the Second Sino-Japanese War

I noticed that you have tagged "no source" to many photos of the war and these photos would be deleted quite soon. I am reverting all you speedy deletion requests to these photos.

Please be aware that any photo, either taken by Chinese or Japanese, during the war which ended in 1945 is public domain according to the copyright laws of China and Japan. Unless you have proofs showing that the copyright has not expired and is holding by another nationality, please DO NOT start any speedy deletion request, because most of them are clearly public domain. They are not speedy deletion. It's very cleat that there are no sources for images. As long as I know, administrators will give users time. If you (and/or I, other users) can provide sources, they will not be deleted. Note: {{PD-China}} doesn't cover photos personally taken before 1945. In any cases, sources have to be provided. Your requests lead to speedy deletion. The China copyright law guarantees all anonymous photos in public domain 50 years after their creation. If you can't provide the author's name and a publication date which is later than 1946, it is fair to assume its copyright expired. --MtBell (talk) 10:58, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Even if we claim that photos are anonymous work, we need original sources. Do you understand ? Anyway I don't think admins delete them speedily. We cannot call them random links. Because I took images from those links. And {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}} is valid to both images. I personally think {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}} is problematic tag, because copyrights of most of them are accepted abroad. But this tag is convenient for commons users at present. In any cases, {{PD-China}} is different from {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}}. When the image was taken before 1946 by Japanese photographer, to use {{PD-Japan}}, we have to prove the date of creation of that image. 我不是非常了解美国法律，但是“Publication”在中文指的应该是出版而不是发表。参考[1]:"“发表”是指将作品通过任何方式(包括口头宣读、演唱)公之于众。而“出版”的含义，是指“作品的复制、发行”。""《世界版权公约》规定：出版是指以物质的形式复制和向公众提供可以阅读和通过视觉知悉的作品的复制品。根据《伯尔尼保护文学和艺术作品公约》第三条的规定，出版是指将作品的复制件以满足公众合理需要的方式发行。并明确指出，戏剧、音乐戏剧或电影作品的表演，音乐作品的演奏，文学作品的公开朗诵，文学或艺术作品的有线传播或广播，美术作品的展出和建筑作品的建造都不构成出版。"

另：

• 抗战期间在中国出版物上首先发表的是PD-China
• 第二个问题不太了解
• 如果外国人最初在中国完成的著作，中国著作权法写的是“首先在中国境内出版”而不是发表，所以适用于“Publication”的含义，如果完成了未出版则不算在中国。

I am working on an SVG version of File:GDP of China in RMB(1953-2008).png but I believe the scale is off by 10 - it appears that it should range from 10^1 to 10^5 instead of from 10^2 to 10^6. I am basing this both on the linear chart at File:Prc1952-2005gdp.gif and on the data that I have been able to find, for example the table at http://www.chinability.com/GDP.htm . Hi. The image was originally plotted for a Chinese article, so the GDP (Y-axis) is presented in 10^8 (亿) not 10^9 (billion). Since this file is no more used in any Wikipedia project, please just feel free to make any change you want. --MtBell (talk) 05:49, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

By the way, I have created a couple of hundred translations of images into Chinese and it would be helpful to check the translations to see if they are acceptable. For groups of images, like the population graphs, you can just tell me the changes that are needed, and I can make them to all of them. You can find most of them in the Category:Translation possible - SVG (switch). I have been using "Chinese (Traditional)" for zh, and am not sure that is correct. Switch though, does not allow multiple versions of a specific language, so zh-yue etc. would need to be in a separate file. Should I be using "Chinese (Simplified)" instead, for zh? @Delphi234: Thank you for your great works. I will check the Chinese labels. For the simplified/traditional character problem, IMHO, it would be better if your SVG files can switch between simplified Chinese (zh-hans) and traditional Chinese (zh-hant). Two separate files for zh-hans and zh-hant are also acceptable. In zhwp, we use an auto-conversion system for handling simplified/traditional Chinese characters. We use zh-hans for simplified Chinese users and zh-hant for traditional Chinese users. The system will automatically determine which characters (and sometimes images if both versions have been created) should be displayed according to user preferences. --MtBell (talk) 08:41, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

How simple and elegant a solution! As mentioned, a limitation of switch is that only one variation of a language can be included. So separate en-British, en-American, en-Australian, etc. can not be included, and separate files need to be created to separate zh-hans and zh-hant. I am curious though, just how separate images can be displayed by user preference. Can you give an example of that? Do the images need to be named in a certain way? I know that only png conversions of svg are displayed in the website page. Since I have been creating traditional, I guess for each image I should be creating a -zh-hans version. What name does it need to use to be automatically used for anyone who has chosen simplified characters? Adding it each time will be easy, but since I only speak English, the translations may need to be corrected. Delphi234 (talk) 20:34, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

@Delphi234: The conversion codes in zhwp are somehow like this: -{zh-hans:foo1;zh-hant:foo2}-. You may find an example here.
