This picture can be deleted as it exists twice. How can I get an own picture deleted or renamed? Thank you, Apeto

Use the template Duplicate. Multichill (talk) 13:06, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Non-empty redirects

It might be a good idea to try a run of your recat bot on the non empty redirects instead of just moving them. Most of those images are categorised by bots or novices anyway (I just cleaned a couple in Category:Building). --Foroa (talk) 06:57, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, this might be useful for some categories. I will have a look at it. Multichill (talk) 13:12, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Delete

DELETE, DELETE, DELETE...Is easy to delete, no? But to upload is a major difficulty! I upload files that are in English Wikipedia Project!!! Don't delete more files uploaded by me of english or another Wikipedia language, ok?

You transfered fair use images from en wikipedia to commons. Fair use is perfectly acceptable at en wikipedia (see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content), but not allowed here. Please read Commons:Licensing carefully otherwise more of your uploads will get deleted. Multichill (talk) 12:17, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

"Please add categories to this image"

Hello. I think, it makes no sense adding uncat to an image used on a gallery page which is already sufficiently categorized, e.g. like this one. Maybe you could adjust the bot this way? Just an idea... --S[1] 10:20, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi S1, you're not the first to mention it. Galleries dont replace categories. You might want to read Commons:Categories and Commons:Categories vs Galleries, also my archives are filled with discussions on this subject. Multichill (talk) 10:34, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
OK, you're right, I didn't know this one. --S[1] 16:26, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

User:Multichill/Category suggestions

Is it possible to add alphabetical headers (A, B, ...) into this list?

What we should do in case of single/plural forms (Beach, Category:Beaches)?

EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:29, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

ABC should be done by hand (maybe in next version), this is a list of suggestions, if the suggestion is wrong, dont create it. Please also take a look at Commons:Village pump#Lot of possible new categories, Multichill (talk) 15:34, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello, please notify the original uploader about incomplete source information. I've only uploaded a new file version. Thanks --GeorgHHtalk   09:30, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

You didnt mention where you got that higher resolution version from (aka no source). Multichill (talk) 09:38, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
See the File history section: "higher resolution (from Image:Image12.jpg)". --GeorgHHtalk   14:04, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, i did check the file history, you chose to upload an unsourced file (Image:Image12.jpg, without proper source). That's why i notified you. The orginal uploader already had a notification at his talk page. Multichill (talk) 14:11, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot asking to add categories

Please stop your bot from adding Uncategorized template to my images. All of my images are either used in galleries in main namespace or put in categories. I see no reason for duplication. --Derbeth talk 17:33, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Derbeth, you're not the first to mention it. Galleries dont replace categories. You might want to read Commons:Categories and Commons:Categories vs Galleries, also my archives are filled with discussions on this subject. Multichill (talk) 18:25, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

See more redundancy

I see that you added that template to the category for Silene. Do you know that the taxonomy navigation now 1) shows the gallery instead of the category if the gallery exists and 2)changes color to indicate that there is a gallery available? (Template_talk:Taxonavigation#Feature_request)

It sure would be nice if the software could work as promised on that list. I appreciate that there is the important business of highlighting that galleries exist in as many places as possible on this wiki, but it certainly would be nice if the software could function also.

This messages intention was to 1)inform about yet another way galleries are linked to with the kindly suggestion that several redundancies keep happening for those oh so special galleries and 2)an honest opinion of mine that it would be nice if software would be functioning instead of people making lists for the promise of software. -- carol (talk) 12:45, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Didnt know that, was playing around after a post at the village pump. Which promise are you talking about? Multichill (talk) 05:27, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Category in template

Hello, please take a look at our edit: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Orna015-Rechteck.png&curid=321650&diff=14251768&oldid=1322953 The images have there category in a template. The idea was to get so a higher flexibility. If you want to write the category directly in the wikitext it would be no problem, but please use a bot because with nearly 160 images it is too much for me to do it by hand. --Kolossos (talk) 07:28, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Most of the templates adding a licence (like GFDL) are on my ignore list. Templates combining licence and topic category are nasty :-). I'll kick this template of my ignore list and clean up. Multichill (talk) 08:07, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Verzoek

Multichill (talk) 18:31, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Biospecies to be categorised

Biospecies are very well-organised by pages. I started giving categories to a few species-images; them realised I had to make parallel to each species-page a species-category. That means: I reorganised Category:Trifolium which had hardly any image in categories, and I ended up with about 35 new categories (with wikispecies links added as well, see for wikispecies http://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Trifolium ), about 250 images categorised and 43 pages put in the new parallel categories. It took me about 450 edits and almost a day; but the process was routineous. Two questions:

  • If the classifiing bot had gone over these, it should have given none of these new-made categories; so happily, the bot hadn't run yet over these. Can you avoid your classifiing bot to run over biospecies items?
  • Is it possible to generate page-connected categories for species, starting probably at wikispecies,(and give them wikispeciesCompact templates; possibly add commonscat templates to the wikispecies pages also!); and finally put all items on the corresponding page in the category? It concerns a hughe number of pages, categories and items.
Greetings, Havang(nl) (talk) 08:38, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
A discussion on this subject has been started under Commons:COMBotBot at my talk page. Havang(nl) (talk) 15:43, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Havang, because there's so much activity surrounding categories i'm only categorizing images where <category name> == < gallery name>. My bot is doing this kind of edits. So for the time being no images will end up in the parent category. As for the template part, is possible, but would have to write some new code to get this done. Multichill (talk) 20:14, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
O.K., thanks for informing me. Havang(nl) (talk) 22:13, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

(reset)My idea was always that if Commons:COMBotBot were to be authored then Botchill could follow and move the galleries into existing genus categories -- there are several categories at upper levels which have huge issues ("issues" being collections of images and galleries which need to have a more refined category given to them) since the changes in the plants categorization rules occurred. Much of what needs to be done with these particular subcategories has already been written as software. The creation of the non-existing genus pages is (I think) a new idea here and perhaps this kind of functionality needs to be authored.

The templates and the genera list have been created for almost all of a few of the very upper level plant trees and the lists of genus categories that need to be made have been included on the category page with the same name as the template that needs to be applied. I am about three templates away from completing a three tree Order to genus category tree and with the instructions pasted on the talk pages for how to add species to this tree, then the species categories can be researched and more thoughtfully added (the names start to get really weird at that point -- almost 300 years since the naming system started....)

Multichill, are you in the mood and of the ability to author software? If a certain order is followed in how the software moves over these files (image pages, galleries) commons can have the best and most accurate and most populated plant taxonomy collection available at this point in time. -- carol (talk) 21:00, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

I can author software if i know exactly what has to be done. You want my bot to create categories right? Where do i get the information which categories to create and which template to put at each category? Multichill (talk) 21:18, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Blaeu (19) and other cat things

  • The 19 items mentioned under Blaeu (19) at your page category propositions may be put into Category:Maps by Willem and Johannes Blaeu by your bot.
Ok, will give my bot a go at it.
  • I have made all subcategories (21) of Category:Carabus and categorised all images (ca. 55) by hand. Can you make a bot check run and tell me what you think of the result?
Ok, my bot will probably come along in the next couple of days
  • I have made all subcategories (85) of Category:Carex but did not (re)categorise (suppress the Carex category and/or add subcategories) the huge amount of images. Can you have a bot-run doing this and tell me what you think of the result?
Same here, i seem to be having about 15.000 images currently in queue to be categorized, so it might take some time.
  • Do you want to know how I dit the serial category-making? Greetings Havang(nl) (talk) 11:25, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Copied the categories from the gallery? That's how i wanted to do it with my bot :-). Multichill (talk) 13:03, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
    3 answers O.K.
I did the Category-making somewhat more sofisticated.
  • 1. I open the page <species subspecies>, there is often a category of format <Category:species|subspecies>, among with possible other categories. (Page names are more free than scientific category names. Therefore it is not just converting page name into category name; the found category texte Category:species B|subspecies B has priority over de page name species A subspecies B. This is the tricky part for a bot.
  • 2.I make a copy of all categories on this page (using these under 4.); then I change Category:species|subspecies into category:species subspecies (removing |) and remove all other categories.
  • 3.I save page <species subspecies>, which has now the right (red, sometimes blue) category:species subspecies.
  • 4.I open the new subspeciescategory category:species subspecies and I paste the copied set of categories, including of course Category:species|subspecies. (For blue, I check the correctness of the category format and the occurrence of other cat's; that part remains may-be human action).
  • 5. I close the new subspecies category, open below and check the species category (subspecies category has to be sorted by alphabet, no more suspecies page in the species category) , which shows me the next subspecies page, returning to 1 for the next cycle of handlings.
  • Extension: putting all images from page to category, selectively deleting redundant categories within this tree, keeping the out-of this-tree categories. Could be for your bot.
It is a process with almost no typewriting, just open/close,copy/paste/delete and scroll; and without influencing the material content. So I think a bot may do most of this correctly. Does this help you; do you have questions about it? You may compare speciescategories before (Category:Ceanothus , Category:Betula) and after (Category:Carabus , Category:Carex) the process. (Once having got the routine, I can do about 40 cycles in one hour by hands). Greetings Havang(nl) (talk) 14:13, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Note added:bad luck, the pages in my exemples (Category:Ceanothus and Category:Betula) are not alphabetisised; then the page category is <category:species>, now you need the page name itself to make <category:species subspecies> and to give this the <category:species|subspecies>. Havang(nl) (talk) 17:04, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Ah something like i had in mind for my bot (without the changing of galleries), wouldnt this be better sorting? Multichill (talk) 17:10, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
The result is equivalent, and it seems more easy for a bot. Havang(nl) (talk) 19:46, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

software problems?

User:Multichill/Sort categories and User:Multichill/Category suggestions

-- carol 17:36, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

What makes you think that? First is one is running (7000+ edits to go), second one is running too (14000+ edits to go). See my bot's contributions. Multichill (talk) 18:16, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
That is beautiful! I get impatient, heh. Sorry? -- carol (talk) 19:25, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Me too, this weekend i gave my bot some extra botsnacks to finish checking all images for uncategorized images. My bot tagged about 180.000 files in the last couple of days. I finally did a full scan of all images and now am busy doing the jobs metioned above. I'm also doing an update of User:Multichill/Category suggestions. We currently have about 300.000 uncategorized files, so plenty of work. Multichill (talk) 19:43, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I left an authoring request at a nicer heading than one headed by "software problems?" here. Your bot can work more safely if that more specific bot is authored. Making categories is a new thing for software here, I think -- do you feel up to this task? -- carol (talk) 21:05, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
And here is a little less -- my favorite high school back in my subbing days was one that had won national awards here for their robotics. I tried to give "ram chips" as snacks via email then and at that time, I was in need of ram for the computer that I had been using. It is a good memory that even being far away from there cannot change. -- carol (talk) 21:08, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Clever botwork

I noticed this one: clever and showing how difficult it can get. --Foroa (talk) 10:20, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunatly someone created a duplicate (wronly named) category. Multichill (talk) 10:28, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
This one is less clever: moving from a good category to a redirect. I think we better delete that redirect once it is empty. --Foroa (talk) 13:28, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
This prevents it from happening again. Multichill (talk) 13:37, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot tagging of XML files

Hi, I notice BotMultichill is tagging XML files as needing to be categorized, which I think is incorrect. Example: Image:Yorktown, Indiana 1878.png/overlay.kml. The files in this case consist solely of XML geolocation data associated with map images (per the guidelines described in Commons:Geocoding/Overlay). Could the bot be made to ignore these files? Thanks! Huwmanbeing  13:59, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Category is useful. Why not just put them in some category like Category:Geocoding overlays? Multichill (talk) 14:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Categories are certainly useful for normal files; in this case, though, it's uncertain. The only purpose of these particular XML files is to serve as helpers to separate (and categorized) images, and they really have no purpose outside that. It's not a media file, nor is it a proper page -- it's simply a short snippet of XML. Note too that the tag the bot is adding says, "This media file is uncategorized. Please help improve this media file by adding it to one or more categories, so it may be associated with related media files, and so that it can be more easily found." This is inaccurate since the document in not a media file.
However, as you suggest, it might be suitable to categorize these XML snippets in some way, so I'll start a thread on the Geocoding Overlay talk page inviting comment. I do think it'd be good, though (at least for the time being) to have the bot exempt these types of files. Thanks ~ Huwmanbeing  20:54, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Just wondering, have XMLs been excluded yet? Thanks! Huwmanbeing  17:56, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
No. Multichill (talk) 18:29, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
...Will they be? As is, it's incorrect -- the bot is tagging non-image, non-media files with a note saying "Please add categories to this image". Huwmanbeing  23:22, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Dont think so, the image namespace is supposed to contain media. Maybe the kml overlays are in the wrong namespace. Multichill (talk) 09:40, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Interesting — as you say, perhaps they should be in a different namespace. I'll see if there's someone on the geocoding project who can look into that.
This still leaves the incorrect tags, though. Regardless of the namespace it's in (or should be in), XML is in no way an image, so adding "please categorize this image" is clearly incorrect. I'll go ahead and manually remove the tags from those files and will see what other project participants says about the namespace. Huwmanbeing  10:57, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

question about authoring time

So, I am curious. How long does it take for you to author a function via python? Personally, I have some good experience with python and some not so good experience with perl. I found writing in python to be very straight foreward and somewhat rewarding (mentally) when a good script finally worked and did what it was supposed to do. You do not seem to be having the same success rate that I did which is the reason I am here asking. And then, in a projection of what would happen if people who wanted to write software did not write it and instead force everyone to write their own -- wouldn't that be somewhat good to make jobs for writing software cease to exist? -- carol (talk) 21:34, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Depends on the complexity, several hours to several days. What do you mean by successrate? Multichill (talk) 05:30, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
I put my good scripts online and I am particularly suspicious of a movie that I saw -- the conversion of what were obviously mostly film frames into animation frames I had a set of scripts that could accomplish that -- but I didn't know this until I worked a little with inkscape (that my scripts worked better than inkscape for this purpose). Those scripts were sent via an email, I consider them to be successful when I see they can be used like that. I have shared my really well written scripts and a couple of joke scripts which did not hurt anything and also demonstrated how to do other things. If you are interested to see that area of my web site, let me know. (To just paste it feels like so much bragging when I assume I am on the talk page of a person who can write computer scripts that are at least as functional as mine). Nothing I did was as impressive as being able to find the duplicate image from a collection of several million, however. I was also not working with a database though. -- carol (talk) 18:38, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
You do know the difference between a web log and a python script? One is a diary where opinions are expressed or observations noted or events mentioned, things like that. The other, python is a language that is used to give a computer (a box with some processors and memory gizzmos usually with a keyboard and a display and still more complex than a telephone which can also have many of these things....) instructions about how to make quick calculations or typically, they are really good for accomplishing redundant tasks. There is a big difference in those two things. One is about the past of a person and the other is about the future for a computer. -- carol (talk) 00:02, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Carol, again, way to much text. Please dont use my talk page as a weblog ;-) Multichill (talk) 09:42, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Would it help

Would it help if I manually cloned your page User:Multichill/Category suggestions and added a further column. New suggested category. Manually I would take a image from the gallery, and add the new suggested category to it. Manually I would edit this tag and hook the category into the tree- thus creating it. Would you then be able to direct your bot to this new category and classify all the images in the offending page. Example

In case where the category stays same means it has been checked. If there is no category suitable a text comment like **NO** should suffice

I am thinking of the Geographical categories particularly and the easy ones such as singulars that should be plurals. The system you have suggested takes to many keystrokes and mouse clicks and has the other problems I have highlighted.

Firstly, would this be helpful? If so would it be acceptable to call the page User:ClemRutter/New category suggestions or better to keep it in your space as User:Multichill/New category suggestions?

Clem ClemRutter (talk) 00:39, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Any thoughts? ClemRutter (talk) 09:27, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

You can transfer the line to User:Multichill/Categories not to create and leave a not in which category to put the images, see the examples over there. When i have some time i will start transfering images to these categories. Multichill (talk) 09:46, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I can see you are overworked. Forget the not bit- it is the rest I need an answer on. I am testing out a ASUS with a seven inch screen- and doing page transfers are too many keystrokes. I can do what I suggested if it would help. If it won't- no probs- I have a summers worth of images to upload. Clem. ClemRutter (talk) 10:17, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Im currently looking at a way to automate this, something like category. For example beaches to categorize all uncategorized images linked from Beach to Category:Beaches. Multichill (talk) 10:21, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I will go ahead and start creating the list then in the format category|gallery|comment and create the receiving categories- then you can use this directly with beaches. I have included a comment field to leave an audit trail if needed.
Example
  • Jättakullen|Jättakullen|Existing
  • Jewish history in Cologne|Jüdische Geschichte in Köln|Into English
  • Jewish cemetery in Köln-Deutz|Jüdischer Friedhof Deutz|Format used in Berlin
  • Sony Ericsson K700i|K700i|Existing
I can start this evening, and put it in User:ClemRutter/New category suggestions.
ClemRutter (talk) 10:53, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Please do it like this category (check the source, will create the template in a moment):
  • Please put all uncategorized files used at [[]] in :Category:.
  • Please put all uncategorized files used at [[]] in :Category:.
  • Please put all uncategorized files used at [[]] in :Category:.
  • Please put all uncategorized files used at [[]] in :Category:.

Image deletion

Sorry for my worse English. May I ask you for this: how to delete image Image:No smoking symbol 3D.svg? I give a 3d-look to a universal 'No Smocking sign', and upload it to Commons, but afterwards I upload my 3d-looked sign as a new version of Image:No_smoking_symbol.svg. Now, I think, is needed to delete duplicate image. Thank you. -- Rino ap Codkelden (talk) 08:03, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, kind of missed your posted (getting crowded over here). You can use the Duplicate template to mark duplicate files. Multichill (talk) 09:50, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

To create or not

Question: in sorting the "category suggestions" into "to create"or "not to create", must I copy the item from one page to the other, or take it out and transfer? Havang(nl) (talk) 10:54, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

I think transfering is the best way to prevent double work. Multichill (talk) 13:54, 10 September 2008 (UTC). OK Havang(nl) (talk) 14:00, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Manual sorting of category suggestions was faster by first searching and defining or creating the categories alike/not alike page names; I have checked given categories. Your page is very slowly loading and saving, I now copy parts of it to work with . Have you comments, wishes or advises? P.S. Your bot is running so fast that an army of wikipedians is needed to feed him; marvellous! Greetings, Havang(nl) (talk) 19:52, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Seems to go just fine. I will start categorizing images at the not to create page soon so that those categories wont show up again when i generate a new list. It's quite a easy command. You tell the bot to take all images from a certain category and replace Uncategorized with a category. For example i tell the bot to work on Beach and put all the uncategorized files in Category:Beaches. I'm bugging Siebrand atm to include it in User:CommonsDelinker/commands, will get back to you. Multichill (talk) 10:03, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Note:concerning my transfers (both sections, to create or not) all images on the page may be put into the corresponding blue category, not only the uncategorised. Havang(nl) (talk) 10:09, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I'll stick to the uncategorized ones. Multichill (talk) 10:34, 11 September 2008 (UTC). OK. Havang(nl) (talk) 10:59, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Category:Flora by country

Thanks for placing all the Flora of categories in to the corresponding Nature of categories. As it happens, your example is not in Flora by country. Would you have a bot check them all for this please. It's quite a well populated category so it'd be good if it was "complete". -Arb. (talk) 16:23, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Heh, complete what? -- carol (talk) 16:39, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Now i'm happy i have a list of countries. See User:Multichill/Kladblok for a list of countries which should be in Category:Flora by country. Doing it my hand is faster than me having to write some code (because of sortkeys). Multichill (talk) 16:51, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Complete retard -- I get it now. -- carol (talk) 17:04, 10 September 2008 (UTC) My apologies to anyone who has been given this "title" in real life due to faulty testing practices and/or being judged relative to a flawed idea of what is average for intelligence. So, my apologies for lowering what the retards have been capable of by comparing this situation to it. -- carol (talk) 18:22, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

User_talk:Multichill/Archives/2008/May#Things_I_saw_during_my_botlike_days <-- These people need that undo function badly. They need this much more than they needed anyone to make "Flora by country" categories. I have no idea the reason they are unable to articulate that they have this need, but they really really do. -- carol (talk) 22:04, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
"maybe i'm building something..." that would certainly be a very useful tool. If you go ahead with it, consider including in it the "region" that each country "belongs to" (eg Caribbean for Jamaica or East Asia for Japan). This would allow you to action eg #3 at User_talk:Siebrand#Restoring_links_to_Category:Plants_by_country_and_others -Arb. (talk) 09:47, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
First see if i can ever get this by country thing working. I have some good ideas, but no time yet to put them to the test. Multichill (talk) 10:23, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Check categories

Did you mean something like what I've done at Image:01dusk.jpg#Licensing:? If so, copy the "fullurl" part from Template:Check categories test over to Check categories, and you're set. Lupo 23:01, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Images included via templates

The problematic image

I am guessing that your bot is adding categories to images based on their presence in article galleries of the same subject? Pretty neat, but be careful of images transcluded via templates, such as this diff which I undid. Carl Lindberg (talk) 06:29, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, that shouldnt be happening, i'll figure out a way to prevent this from happening in the future. Multichill (talk) 10:17, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

New templates

Multichill, look at User:Multichill/Categories to create, what is wrong in my format used in the new template? Havang(nl) (talk) 15:25, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

You mixed the variables up. I changed the template to prevent this from happening, see my change. Multichill (talk) 15:31, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot flag granted

Hello, I granted a bot flag to BotMultichillT. Please add it to Commons:Bots along with a short description. Thank you, Patrícia msg 20:42, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. I just fired up the new bot and everything seems to work great :) Multichill (talk) 15:10, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Subpages and subcategories

There are many large pages, which present several galleries in subpages; the images need then categorised according to the subpages. See f.i. page Poznań and Category:Poznań. Your bot is already doing miracles; can he do this miracle too and select subpages for catfromsubpage ? (No hurry) Havang(nl) (talk) 20:46, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

I have some ideas. I could pull information from galleries or from Commonsense.
  1. You could use populate category to get images if the right galleries exist
  2. I could pull categories from Commonsense for each image and see if subcategories of Category:Poznań turn up (probably the best option).
I'll get back to you about this (and if i forget, please remind me ;-) ). Multichill (talk) 15:13, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Tags put on catpages

I have put a series of tags on cat pages with names differ from gallery pages. I have not cleaned up your page User:Multichill/Categories not to create‎, so you see how I progressed; if things are OKE, you may clean up. I don't know why copy/paste resulted in a spontaneous blanc before the tag line ; I hope this doesn't matter. For the categories with same name as gallery pages, I made a list on User:Multichill/Categories to create‎, prsuming you can let a bot do this job. Any remarks, advises yet? Greetings, Havang(nl) (talk) 10:52, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot seems to work great. Found a bug (filtering went wrong sometimes) and fixed it. I'll keep an eye on the contributions, but i think i'm going to be putting it in a crontab soon. So go ahead and put the template at categories! Multichill (talk) 15:15, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Experiment: 3 tags

Hoi, Multichill, your catting bot is running for Olympic gold. I did (silently) an addition experiment: 3 tags on one page, (tl|populate category tl|populate category|gallery=William Miller page 2 and tl|populate category|gallery=William Miller page 3) on Category:William Miller. It didn't work, i think. It is unimportant, i just let you know it. May-be the three tags have now to be put one after the other. Havang(nl) (talk) 15:46, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking about the possibility to add multiple galleries, but i didnt feel like implementing it yet. I just get the information from the first template. If this is going to happen more often, i'll implement it. Multichill (talk) 15:52, 13 September 2008 (UTC). It's not a problem, the unclassified images will show up at a next run. Havang(nl) (talk) 16:02, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Bottagging? and a break

Do you tag by bot the categories on the category list at User:Multichill/Categories to create; or must it be done manually? I have run fast to feed your experimental bot with a good set of experimental data, I 'll take soon a break "to breath a bit"; and wait to see reactions of people as well. You are really shaking up things, and it seems to me that the whole thing may act as a learning tool. Havang(nl) (talk) 16:02, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

You are blowing up my watchlist - smile Havang(nl) (talk) 16:40, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't see what went wrong with this one, Category:Flade Kirke‎, I just tagged it, you run for zero, i retagged it already, taking care of differences K, k. See history. Havang(nl) (talk) 16:37, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Yup, the bot is case sensitive. Multichill (talk) 21:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Difficult cases

I am doing two things at the moment.

  • Revised format of User:Multichill/Categories to create- so we can place uncertain files in one list, and from there look at them and manually see if they can be placed- created a section where we can put pages with multiple galleries- pages that need hand treatment etc.
  • Taking a letter from the Unclassified list- and classifying the Geographical cats according to the rule book. When done, I will leave them for template and bot processing.

ClemRutter (talk) 16:49, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot-how does it work

There are two cases.

  • All the files in the gallery- with tags or otherwise need to be tagged with the suggested category. This is when you have Parent category just containing gallery pages. You create a child category and want to put everything you find in the gallery in that childcat. You delink page from parent cat.
  • Cat:Province of Foo--->Adorp,Bdorp,Cdorp.
->*Cat:Province of Foo-->Cat:Adorp--Adorp, Cat:Bdorp--->Bdorp, Cat:Cdorp--->Cdorp
  • Only the unclassified files in the category need to be tagged. This happens in the case of a massive gallery where 4 or 5 files are unclassified- and they could reasonable be put in a High level category.
  • Page Bilder aus Foo (200 images- 4 unclassified) the 4 could go into Cat:Foo (30Images, 20 pages, 20categories)

I am sure the bot can do it- how do I tag the images. Will the wording

  • Please put all files used at Banca di Sicilia (Camillo Autore) in Category:Banca di Sicilia. For all.
  • Please put all uncategorized files used at Banca di Sicilia (Camillo Autore) in Category:Banca di Sicilia. For UC only.

be correct. ClemRutter (talk) 16:49, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

@ClemRutter: One good line of next-step-thinking!!! Another line of next-step-thinking I offer you is: how to do botrecatting of pages who have to get categoryname=pagename. See a exciting exemple: Category:Euphorbia, all pages have to be recat one level down such that page and image appear on the same cat, with name similar to page name, and subsequently tagged with populate category. We may win a lot there if a bot can recat pages to arrive at a sililar situation as for Category:Carex. Havang(nl) (talk) 17:04, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
@ClemRutter: I have been thinking about that when i first wrote the bot, but i dropped it. Maybe in some future version. The main goal is to categorize uncategorized files. As an extra i'm also putting files from parent categories in there.
@Havang: I already have the logic for that (here), only have to convert it from a offline dump based bot to an online template based bot. I think Diffuse category is a good name for the new template. But first get this first bot stable. Multichill (talk) 21:50, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Sure, stabilising first. I was already wondering if this (here) was preparing that other logics; and whether users had to do something for preparing; so I made as a not-sure action there a few subcategories manually; I intended to ask what to do there: make subcategories or add categories to be subcategorised. So I ask that now (No hurry). Havang(nl) (talk) 22:56, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
I have been sitting here repeating the same process, creating link categories. This is exactly what Havang(nl) describes. In that I mean- I find a page-beautifully written with the correct categories-these will often be for a church or a street. The page is in several categories- but it should be a category itself. What I need to do is create a Link category, which will become the parent category for the page and a subcategory for all the categories on the page.
So I Open Page, Edit, Copy page name into [ [ Category: ] ]. Cut all the existing categories. Preview. Click on Redlink. Copy. Save. Back.Back.Back Save. I now prepare catfromgal template. As you describe it, when this is run, the new category is populated with all the uncated files and the page. I am sure that a bot could do this quicker- though a human must check that this Link category is apppropriate. If this is easy to do- I will stop pretending I am a bot and just add the files to a list with an appropriate template. ClemRutter (talk) 23:02, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

FOP

Gr Sterkebaktalk 20:52, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Hoi Sterkebak, FOP betekent Freedom of panorama. Multichill (talk) 21:06, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Dank je wel. Weer wat geleerd. Sterkebaktalk 21:31, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

template-problem to be solved

Multichill, the short template is not removed after action. Havang(nl) (talk) 17:26, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Can you provide me with an example? Please note that i just killed the bot in the middle of Category:Alt-Hürth because i have to fix some filtering issue. Multichill (talk) 17:34, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Just look at your bot contributions [2] and you see that the removed-lines are missing; they were there for the long template. Havang(nl) (talk) 17:41, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I missed typing a T, there is no template-problem. Havang(nl) (talk) 18:05, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, the one without a T is the bot not running at the toolserver. It is still working on offline dumps. I fixed the filtering issue, it has to do with my overcat filter working on a (old) copy of the database. The bot is running again. Multichill (talk) 21:26, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Several redirects have been "populated" which seems odd to me. Did not investigate the resuls, I noticed only non-empty cetegory redirects in Category:Non-empty category redirects. --Foroa (talk) 09:03, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
The reason is simple: manual preparation of categories for the bot: if a pagename exists as a category, it may be overlooked that it is a redirect. (Exemple: I overlooked Berliner dom). Frequency: 8 out of 500 pages/cat's. So it is not a template-problem. In this case no harm is made: there is an existing bot corrector. Havang(nl) (talk) 09:21, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
Those categories where probably in the list of categories i tagged. Shouldnt be in that list, but fortunatly the redirect bot will clean it up. Multichill (talk) 18:49, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
The redirect bot does not seem to clean regurlarly Category:Non-empty category redirects and anyway does/should not move pictures in a redirected cat that have been edited the last week, so it becomes difficult to trace/spot the unwanted/vandalising redirects. --Foroa (talk) 07:50, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, right, i wrote that bot so i should know that ;-) I'll clean it up. Multichill (talk) 10:38, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
And it continues on populating into redirected categories, now in the Echinops family. --Foroa (talk) 11:33, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Those redirect category were incorrect, first the category was removed (example) and then turned in a redirect to the parent (here). Multichill (talk) 13:06, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Some images remain uncategorised

See Category: Alicudi and notably history of Image:Alicudi 061.jpg‎. Havang(nl) (talk) 00:09, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

This behaviour is intended. The image wasnt tagged as Uncategorized. Bot only works on image in Category:Media needing categories and parent categories of the category tagged with Populate category. Multichill (talk) 18:55, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
But this means that when I tag a category outside your list User:Multichill/Category suggestions, I am doing it prematerious; and the bot by running will remove the tag... that explains a few things. I (we) have yet to remain within your lis for tagging. Thanks to notify Havang(nl) (talk) 19:38, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
I did a scan of all images so i think i found most uncategorized images. New uploads and recent changes are monitored by my bot so i pretty much catch all uncategorized files. Image:Alicudi 061.jpg‎ probably contains a template not in my ignore list, will check tomorrow. When you create a new category please tag it with the template right away so it will be populated. Multichill (talk) 19:44, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
  • I did'n't do that yet, so that you could keep control over the process; I wanted to wait for your instructions and tagged only a few directly; but tagging directly is easier. The long list your bot runs, I selected the blues from the catsuggestion page. There are already some 800 more blue, so ... are these to select for your bot or to tag from now on? Also: can you put an alphabet on the catsuggestion page? Havang(nl) (talk) 20:27, 16 September 2008 (UTC).
Template:Tl was the template causing it not to be tagged as uncategorized btw. Multichill (talk) 19:54, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
I check incidentally: what about this lonely one uncategorised among 13 images: Image:Bialyjelentyl3.jpg. And Image:Entrance GSC.jpg Do you see a reason? Havang(nl) (talk) 13:08, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I think i added Self and Self2 to my list of templates to ignore after these images were scanned. Multichill (talk) 14:20, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Categories to tag

You find a new list categories to bot-tag with "populate category" User:Multichill/Categories to create. I let you remove from this page the lists that you have run. Greetings Havang(nl) (talk) 18:45, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

a no-brainer?

It seems like if you have a software that takes images from galleries and puts them into categories if they exist, that it should be no problem to put them into existing categories when those categories have the soft redirects (which have been added somewhat aggressively in many places) and remove the redirection tag.

Can your bot do this? I don't want to ask the bot to do something that is too complicated for the author.... -- carol (talk) 03:35, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

There is a difference between move and copy. The existing bot only copies uncategorized (sic) images and not the rest ( I hope). It does seen to be very useful- but could become the father to many useful and potentially dangerous bots. I would like a :*copyall bot- to copy every file to a newly created link category.
  • moveall bot- to convert a gallery into a category (could only be used if the gallery had no text description under each image.
  • movecontents of cat- to do the redirections Carol describes
  • copytaggedgalleries bot- to do the copy of uncategorized files from all tagged galleries in a page into the category written in the tag. receiving cat

Still lets try to clear the list while we are waiting :) ClemRutter (talk) 13:00, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Multichills promised "bots" often take longer than it would for a human to work to accomplish the task. User:Multichill/Sort_categories is an example of this. I made categories that a software could finish, yet instead it is a person doing the task. This should be simple stuff to write. Perhaps it is a good day to start with an honest approach and the explanation of the reason that software is promised, but people do the work. There is plenty to be done here that requires a human hand that the need for individuals typing that they make "bots" do things instead of writing software to accomplish things has had its run and needs to cease. It is possible for a group of people to vote that a user has abilities and accomplishments but that vote does not actually make that person have abilities and accomplishments. Commons can be used for more than simply proving this over and over and over again.
Some honesty now? -- carol (talk) 17:06, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Carol, you should type less and read more. Multichill (talk) 18:38, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Read what? I read for most of my years ages 7-40. 30+ years of reading and now I read User:Multichill/Sort_categories and I know that a software that worked like that would work thousands of times more efficiently on the categories I have been working with after Commons:COMBotBot is written and runs through those categories that are ready for it.
Allow me the privilege of reading what you write. What is your definition of "bot" and is it related to the definition of the word "software"? -- carol (talk) 19:01, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

An example: Category:Phyllanthus. I just created Category:Phyllanthus emblica. I am assuming that your software will be able to move the gallery into that category now that it exists. Category:Phyllanthus acidus already exists, I learned that by putting the species template up and using the existing gallery names. Without looking at that category, I know that it has a soft redirect applied to it.

Once, I pointed the user instance Multichill and Rocket000 to en:Unlimited Register Machine as an example of how it is possible to write an infinite loop using a language with only three commands. I also happen to know that it is possible to obtain the square (^2) of that number (not an infinite loop but something extremely more useful) using those same three (or four -- one of the exercises was to reduce the number of commands from 4 to 3) commands. That is an example of more than just "reading". I think (my opinion now) that such exercises for people (flesh and blood) to do is good as it enables more logic for other things. Deleting that article at English wikipedia does not make any of those facts no longer exist. That one of you two is good at making templates and the other claims to be able to author software should not be a problem. You can read and read and read, but if the reader is unable to know themselves and know what they can and cannot do -- what is gained and worse, what is lost? Rocket000 writes templates that are more functional than the one software I have seen you write. I am sorry about that, I would like to inspire change somewhere and I am here attempting that.

There are as many computer languages almost as there are spoken languages only the nuances are less with the computer languages and the syntax is more important. One thing that spoken language and computer languages require is something to describe or do. To claim to author software but to not use it to accomplish specific tasks when they become obvious is beyond my understanding. I also happen to know, as a flesh and blood being, that my experience with what software can be trusted to accomplish mindlessly is really good.

Are you being paid right now to be an example for the non-legalization of marijuana here in United States? I am in defiance of everything ever told to me about this. That substance made me ethusiastic for learning this stuff and my logic usually improved. Nancy Reagen, not one of my role models, however, that being said did say one thing that I really liked. "Just say no". When something hurts or is wrong or too much is unknown about it or it is too invasive (like I say no to concentrated substances legal and illegal here and needles). One of the most recent anti-marijuana ads here was about the child not taking the garbage out to the curb on the correct day for pick-up. At this location, the sober child accomplished this task three or four times in the five years and only once completed it (took it out and brought it in). The marijuana using adult here did that successfully almost every time -- this is inspite of the gender related once a month problems which apparently make us too unstable to be depended upon. Just say no to being a wrong advertisement for use of that substance if this is what you are doing.

The amount that I accomplished with it tells a different tale. I have known of people who are rumored to be very functional while using alcohol, I am not one of those people. The fact that everyone is different is a good fact until a single rule is attempted to be made for them. This California, this halfway step and their medical marijuana is perhaps the most evil thing I have seen. Give responsibility for determining this to a bunch of corporations which are crumbling?

People should know themselves, know what they can accomplish or not and what they can and can't do and allow others to accomplish this. It involves saying no to things that are wrong.

Can we start with what your definition of "bot" is and your definition of "software" is and see if they have anything in common with each other? -- carol (talk) 20:00, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Dear Carol, i didnt like the suggestions you made before, but with making suggestions about drugs and alcohol you crossed a line. Consider this talk page off limits for the next couple of weeks. If you post anything to this talk page in the next weeks i consider this harassment and will act accordinly. Multichill (talk) 20:12, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

sorry for the lecture

Since I am located in California, the assumption that everyone here is "into" alternative lifestyle things is wrong. It is possible to be not into it and still allowing of others to opt for that -- I don't really care but I do care that it is not assumed of me.

That being said, if I lived in nl, I would be quite happy and authoring very useful software all of the time due to what I have heard about the liberal gov't there. If my assumptions were wrong, I am sorry. -- carol (talk) 20:05, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

template for populate category

A short description of what this does? -- carol (talk) 20:05, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

category

Hi Multichill, thanks for adding a missing category, e.g. here. However, I am sure I added a category while uploading the file. Something is wrong there. I do not know my way in Commons. Can you mention this were it belongs. It is the second time I am noting this. Regards, Elly (talk) 14:46, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Answered your question on irc, HotCat is your friend. Multichill (talk) 15:00, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Multichill,

How to edit a page of nl:Help:Uitleg. Statistics after 6 days new bot

On sept 12th, ca. 5500 catfrompage suggestions were made; on sept 17, 4300 remain to be done: ca. 1200 new cat's have been made and tagged. Multichill, do you have an estimate, how many images have been (re)categorised by this process as soon as the bots have run those 1200 cat's? Havang(nl) (talk) 16:41, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

You could take the old version and take the sum of all numbers between brackets and to the same for the current page. The difference is the amount of images. BotMultichillT now has around 5000 edits, but BotMultichill also ran. Multichill (talk) 20:33, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Editcount BotMultichillT after end of run: 1074 categories treated, 4940 images (re)categorised. And, adding up, about 150 categories may have run on BotMultichill, which may mean about 700 more images. The 4300 cat's still on the list may correspond to about 20.000 images. 43 categories have run twice, due to direct tagging without removing from the list, that could be biospeciescat's i transferred after the first run to the bot-tagging list; this didn't harm. ). Havang(nl) (talk) 10:29, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Just did a query and User:Multichill/Category suggestions is now up to date again. 2959 categories to go. Still 94345 images left which are in a gallery, but not in a category. Multichill (talk) 12:45, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Advantages and risks

  • Advantages of the whole procedure - partly manually partly by bot - :
    • (1) The primary aim: speeding up categorisation of images. Good results.
    • (2) The secundary harvest: new categories that fill in the category tree: i see from my watchlist that people join in positively.
    • (3) The learning effect: Tuning pages and categories !!!
  • What about the safety risks? Is in the future a controle system for tagged pages needed? Greetings, Havang(nl) (talk) 10:29, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Because only uncategorized images and images from parent categories are moved, the impact of vandalism or errors is small. If I included a option to just put all images from a certain gallery in a category the impact of vandalism or errors would be much larger (that's why i didnt make that option). I could build in some extra checking so that more images in a gallery would get tagged, but that's something for the future. Keep up the good work! Multichill (talk) 11:36, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Please read Commons:Categories, especially the part about over-categorization. Multichill (talk) 09:02, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
:-) --Achim Hering (talk) 05:29, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

List

Hoi, Multichill, what do you think of this: Category:Sankt Mariä Geburt, Efferen to cut multigallery pages in part after part? Havang(nl) (talk) 17:12, 19 September 2008 (UTC) - It gave a null-run, do you see a reason? Havang(nl) (talk) 21:07, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Didnt expect anything else. I will explain it, but not now ;-) Multichill (talk) 00:04, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Interwikis for categories by country

Could you please take a look on automation of interwikis for categories by country? There are plenty of them and in many cases folks forgot about interwikis. I do this by hand :-(.

Same script could be used for interwikis for album by artists categories (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese Wikipedias have many of them.

EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:36, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi EugeneZelenko, please see Commons:Bots/Requests#Interwiki robot suggestion. I already have some testing code, dont know when i'll do the final implementation. Multichill (talk) 15:47, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
As far as I understood it's about linking Commons to other projects. My suggestion is mostly related to Wikipedias. However if your solution could be applied to this problem, it'll be great. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:22, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, i misread your email. I created a little toy for this a while back, but it seems to have stopped functioning. I do have some other scripts *somewhere* on the toolserver to locate these kind of categories. All have the same logic:
I can compile a list for you. Between which languages do you want a list? The wiki's should both be on the same cluster (es <-> en is possible) Multichill (talk) 17:37, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

To be tagged as uncategorised

Images with only the Category: Pictures by James Lindsey have to be tagged as uncategorised (The following 200 files are in this category, out of 3,012 total!) Havang(nl) (talk) 18:04, 20 September 2008 (UTC) Idem for Category:Entomart (520 images). Havang(nl) (talk) 19:02, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

This is going to be problematic. Both categories are in the topic tree so technically speaking all the images are categorized :( We have to have a serious look at this part of the category tree, but first reduce the amount of uncategorized images. Multichill (talk) 20:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Look at this

Category:Víkarbyrgi history says 8 categorised, only 5 appear; at page Víkarbyrgi individal items still have media needing categories. Havang(nl) (talk) 10:28, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Server was acting up yesterday, log is full of errors. I'll let the bot do a rerun of categories edited around that time. Multichill (talk) 10:35, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Foto met delete gegeven

Hi Multichill,

Citaat:

painting from Anastasiya Markovich... Can this painting be released under a free licence? it's not own work i guess Sterkebaktalk 20:18, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia staat vol met visual art work.

Multichill (talk) 19:41, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

More hands on deck

Multichill, I worked hard to give the T-bot thing a good start ("een goed begin is het halve werk" -nou ja, halve) and take a wikislow now. May-be it is time to request more hands on deck at the villagepump. Havang(nl) (talk) 19:32, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

It seems to work quite well so yes, it's time to get more people to help. I'll leave a message in the VP. Multichill (talk) 19:45, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

A tool to examine a gallery

To be really productive I need another tool GalleryScan. GalleryScan needs to have 3 input boxes

  • Gallery Name
  • Category (This defaults to Media that is uncategorised..) but can be set for any category.
  • Start

It will go to the gallery page, and search each of the files name, and report any file carrying the named category usually Media that is uncategorised..

This will provide me with a list of all the uncategorised files in the gallery. I will use it to check whether gallery has already been processed. Also in a large gallery with only a few uncat files, it will help me to choose which subcategory to send them to.

Alternatively, MultichillT could be rewritten so it reports into the gallery talk page- the uncat-ed files. I envisage that we need a new template Template:Examine gallery that would be placed on the gallery page to call it. The functions needed must be very similar to those already in the bot.

I do not have enough experience to do this myself, sadly.

ClemRutter (talk) 23:00, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I'll have to think about it. I can update User:Multichill/Category suggestions more often. Only galleries with more than 3 uncategorized files show up in this list. I can make a simple web based tool at the toolserver to show which files in a certain gallery are not in a certain category. Multichill (talk) 19:50, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
  1. That would help. As you do more of these thing you discover certain patterns. If I am working on the Poznan sites, I go to a category to add the --populate template--, you do one gallery page- but there are three others sitting there. I want to test if each of these gallery pages need doing?
  2. Updating User:Multichill/Category suggestions regularly would help. If extra folk start working on the list they need to know how often the list is cleaned. Weekly? Daily? it affects your working technique.
  3. A question Is it possible to place three galleries on the same category at the same time? Do you write --Populate three times, or is there a syntax so you can add multiple entries into the hint --populate template|gallery=[adorp|bdorp|cdorp] -- I see from the source code, the lines if galleries and categories-- and for gallery in galleries .
Keep up the good work. ClemRutter (talk) 00:04, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

De afgekeurde foto

Hi Multichill

Ship stories

Hi, you could do the same unidentified ship trick for the belgium boats in the Maritime boats collection galleries in Category:Ports and harbours in Belgium. --Foroa (talk) 15:19, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Did i do a unidentified ship trick? Or are you talking about Category:Various unidentified sailing ships? See the history :-) Multichill (talk) 15:35, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, that was Wouter, a good score. If you want to populate a categories from several galleries, you could cut and paste the bits and pieces you want into one single gallery and restore it after the population. --Foroa (talk) 19:52, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I used Maritime photo collection to fill up the category. The zandbak trick didnt work because that's not namespace 0 (gallery namespace). I was thinking Category:Various unidentified sailing ships is not the right name, it should be Category:Unidentified sailing ships in line with all the other Unidentified categories. User:Multichill/No country

Hi Multichil! Just in case you hadn't noticed yet, User:Multichill/No country includes some candidates which shouldn't be listed and which are presumably quite easy to avoid: when the country name is actually a substring of a longer word, as in "Category:Chauchina should not be a subcategory of Category:China" or "Category:Robert Schad should not be a subcategory of Category:Chad". Apart from that, it's a great idea! Cheers, Pruneautalk 22:52, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing out. I noticed it too. The new query was already running when i posted the message to the village pump. The new query filters out the dupes and a lot of false positives. Now i'm thinking about how to automaticly add a good suggestion. Multichill (talk) 06:20, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Good idea. A solution could consist of a suggestion template for each xxx by country topic to what it should/should be connected. Ambulances for example are currently only linked to vehicles and not to health or public services. This would help enormously in keeping worldwide consistency, especially with the in/from/of struggle. An idea for a "populate standardlinks" and "default xxx by country categories" templates ? --Foroa (talk) 06:40, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Foroa, not exactly what i was thinking. I was more thinking like Category:Aircraft of Austria -> Category:Aircraft by country -> Category:Vehicles by country -> Category:Vehicles of Austria. This is something i can automate :-) I made a new list which needs fixing, see User:Multichill/By country categories to fix. This will make more suggestions possible. Multichill (talk) 06:57, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I think that we are saying something similar. What I meant is that the structure of each "xxx by country" category item could be in some standard template so that the bot don't need this structure programmed. This populate thing is to accelerate and help users that create new "standard" categories in countries that are developing. --Foroa (talk) 07:26, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Anyway, compiling a script now. After it's done i'll fire up my bot to add the hints. Multichill (talk) 07:43, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Seems quite wrong when adding Category:Subdivisions of the United States. Only some quick checking, but Category:Megaliths by country seems not right. Where do you find/define the hints/basic structure ? --Foroa (talk) 10:16, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I removed a couple of double categories as well, probably due to the time difference between the query/list construction and the bot execution. --Foroa (talk) 10:31, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Found the source of the mess see this edit. That screwed up the structure. Let's see Category:Megaliths in the United States -> Category:Megaliths by country -> Category:Categories by country -> Category:Megaliths by country. I'll add some extra checking in the query.Multichill (talk) 10:42, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
For Megatlith structure: seen Category:Megaliths in France or Category:Megaliths in Belgium. --Foroa (talk) 11:40, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

(Indent reset) There are many master cats by country that have many subcats that are not declared as categories by country as those became too full (not decently sortable). Examples: Category:Buildings by country with churches, castles, ..., architecture, bridges, ... all what's "genre" related ... --Foroa (talk) 11:52, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, what exactly are you trying to say? Could you explain it some more? Multichill (talk) 12:04, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
There used to be a couple of thousands of cats in "categories by country". This has been restructured by user Tano+nr as you can see in the Category:Architecture by country tree, to keep it manageable. This means, that the top level "categories by country" contain only 20 % or so of the "xxx by country" categories. --Foroa (talk) 12:33, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, right! That i know. All the "...by country" categories form a tree with Category:Architecture by country as root. The categories at User:Multichill/By country categories to fix dont seem to be part of this tree and should be fixed. I'm using that tree for logic like Category:Aircraft of Austria -> Category:Aircraft by country -> Category:Vehicles by country -> Category:Vehicles of Austria. Multichill (talk) 12:45, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Populate category

Thanks, i will try. For the name of the gallery, should i input its name or leave the mentin hint? Guérin Nicolas (messages) 08:47, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Category redirect bot

I strongly recommend that you use category_redirect.py instead of commons_category_redirect.py. The latter script relies on Category:Non-empty category redirects, but this category is not reliably populated. We had an extensive discussion of this on en:Template talk:Category redirect. The newer category_redirect.py script directly queries the API to find all non-empty category redirects, whether they are in that tracking category or not. Or, you can just let User:RussBot handle it, since it runs that script here daily anyway. --R'n'B (talk) 12:48, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

I only wrote the script a while ago to get rid of the backlog in Category:Non-empty category redirects (2000+ cats or something in that order), didnt even notice it was renamed until recently. I havent run that script in months. Some other people are running it though, without any problems. O even created User:Category redirect bot, but never fired up the bot. Multichill (talk) 12:59, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't think there is a problem with the old script as to what it does; the problem is what it doesn't do. It only treats a category if it is in Category:Non-empty category redirects; if a category doesn't make it in there, it never gets emptied. And I don't think there is any reliable way to ensure that categories get in there, except to run a touch script over all 12,000 category redirects on a regular basis (waste of resources, since the API method is much more efficient). --R'n'B (talk) 13:27, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Hoi,

Groetjes, Sterkebaktalk 10:19, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Wie is de auteur dan? Is die auteur al 70 jaar dood? Multichill (talk) 10:21, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Gr Sterkebaktalk 20:26, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Delicious pita!

Kindly remove my name from any and all association with your bot. I believe you have run the gauntlet, and my images are all tagged. To not do so is to be guilty of wikistalking, at best. I don't need a bot watching my every image creation, so enough. Rarelibra (talk) 02:35, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi PITA guy, you again? Did you bother to read my responses to your last two posts (here & here)? It's pretty stupid to start an edit war with a bot which monitors recent changes, hahahaaha, wikistalking, LOL. Dont leave any of your files uncategorized and you'll never see my bot again.
