Unused files

Hallo Multichill,

I'asking you since the automatic categorization by your bot seems somehow realted. Would it be possible for your bot to produce a list of all files in Category:Chemical images that should use vector graphics that are not used by any other project or are only used on commons. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 20:23, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

http://toolserver.org/~magnus/files_in_category.php should do that job (can't test, as the toolserver is either slow or down at the moment). Do not forget (as I usually do ;) to change the "Language" to "commons". Best, [w.] 09:03, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Probably at least 2 more weeks before the toolserver is back in business and my bots are fully functional again. You're not going to nominate these images for deletion aren't you? No need to supersede files. Multichill (talk) 11:14, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

No I'm not going to nominate them for deletion. It just to remove them from the category, since there is no urgent need to convert them. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 20:48, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill, this is more or less just a post to keep the thread alive, since it is not urgent. Cheers --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 17:45, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
I guess that the ones which are not in use are already replaced by a better version. Multichill (talk) 16:54, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, so fining those images would make it easier to work through the category systematically. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 07:50, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't have a bot to check if files are in use. You probably have to use check usage on each files. Multichill (talk) 14:07, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Special:UncategorizedFiles

Any idea why the hundreds of images in Special:UncategorizedFiles "escape" from the system ? --Foroa (talk) 09:26, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Related to that, there is quite some cleaning work needed in Category:Deprecated templates. Need for some bot replacements, hidden cats, noinclude in templates ?
And equally related: the template {{description missing}} in File:Corrida.jpg does not generate a category. --Foroa (talk) 10:33, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
The images either contain a template not on my ignore list, or a category (might be in comments).
Cleaning out that category shouldn't take to long.
Looks like the missing templates still needed the Image -> File switch Multichill (talk) 11:57, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Still a few hundreds "Uncategorized" images left. --Foroa (talk) 18:53, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
I clicked around at that special page. Something is wrong. I see files in there which have categories for months. I don't know what's wrong with that page, but i'm leaving it as is for now, we still have plenty of uncategorized files to work on. If we ever manage to get that number a lot lower i'll take a look at that special page again. Multichill (talk) 14:12, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

McCain

Thanks for your message at my talk page. Wikipedia and Wikimedia are working very slowly for me today. Maybe it's my computer. Anyway, thanks for your message. I looked at the blog post. It says: "It was obtained and downloaded legally under the copyright agreement on flickr- I was given credit (which really is something after all- I could have just not been credited and I would never have known)." So, I don't think the image should be deleted, and in fact it seems like it's been undeleted. I'll leave a thank you message at the blog post.Ferrylodge (talk) 20:14, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

How can I stop it

Is there anyway I can stop BotMultichillT from spamming my talk page? I often do bulk uploads with commonist or similar then categorise later. Noodle snacks (talk) 07:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

The message is only placed once and then it's updated. Did you notice hotcat is now always active in the upload form? Makes adding categories at upload very easy. Multichill (talk) 11:46, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I usually get spammed when I am using a bulk upload tool such as Commonist (which is much more practical when dealing with large numbers of images at a time). Noodle snacks (talk) 14:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Please take a look at {{Nobots}}. Multichill (talk) 14:36, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
It might be easier to add a category:To be categorised by Noodle snacks or any other category that suits you, for example Tasmania. Another solution is to upload them all as uncategorised. Both options are very easy with commonist and you don't risk to have problems with bot moves. --Foroa (talk) 14:55, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

bot adding speedy cat

Hi Multichill,
today I stumbled already over 2 images to which your bot, using CommonSense, added Category:Other speedy deletions together with other reasonable cats[1], [2] At least with the first one this was quite unreasonable as the image is still properly licensed at its Flickr source. Any idea? --Túrelio (talk) 08:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

While we are it, I removed already hundreds of metacats (by country, by nationality, by city, ...), so there might be room for further improvement. I would say, whenever there is a word "by" in the cat, you can drop it. There might be a couple of exceptions but it should reduce significantly the noise. Moreover, bot proposed categories "train" people, so some people might think that it is good practice to add images in metacats. --Foroa (talk) 08:32, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Túrelio : blacklisted, don't know how to images ended up in that category
Foroa : I'll change my bot to not put an image in subject by country, but in subject. The same goes for by city, by year, by location. Any more suggestions? Multichill (talk) 11:43, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if this is better as the images are just dumped in the general category (for diffusion) which are hardly cleaned out. The best is when you have an idea about the country (even if you work on a "... by nationality", "... by city" or "... by location" cat that you can't figure out) to stick it on that "Subject in/of/from country" category. Even if the country is occasionally wrong, those cats tend to be better maintained. Few people have the courage to clean up multi-country or meta categories so the best is to get it as deep as possible as maintenance is better at deeper levels (and making a better spreading of the problems amongst the users). I think that moving it up to the higher level makes no real improvement, so not worth it. --Foroa (talk) 12:19, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
My bot tries to put images in the relevant country subcategory, but that category has to exist. Take for example File:Arredondo 2007.jpg. My bot tried to put it in Category:Basketball players from Chile, but that category doesn't exist so the bot falls back to Category:Basketball players by country. Multichill (talk) 12:37, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Maybe the best long term solution for the non existing cats (per country, not the others), is to keep a log of the "not found one" so we could gradually improve on category completion. When looking here, I am really surprised how many - how would I call it - meta-meta cats exist. --Foroa (talk) 13:20, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I am under the impression that the bot still does not understand that {{Categoryredirect}} is redirected to {{Category redirect}} and sends tens of images per day in such categories (a hundred I guess). Either we adjust it or just delete that template. --Foroa (talk) 12:56, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
It's on my fix list (link). We now have a nice list of redirect and disambiguation templates in the Commons family file in pywikipedia. Still have to change the bot to use these lists. Multichill (talk) 13:27, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Cat bot

Hoi Multichil,

Groetsels, Abigor talk 11:52, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 12:40, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Please stop your robot from asking me for categories

Is there a policy that imaged must be linked by the uploader? If so, then your Bot should cite the policy when leaving categorization requests on my talk page. If there is no policy, then please provide a way for me to stop you Bot from adding these requests to my talk page. Like all other editors, I am a volunteer. I do the jobs that appeal to me, and other editors choose to do the jobs that appeal to them. I am not interested in learning how to categorize, so I will leave that for those editors who like the work, unless there is policy (not a guideline) that requires categorization of images. I await your response. -Arch dude (talk) 13:54, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

We have quite a serious backlog (see stats), so every user who uploads an uncategorized file gets a friendly request to categorize the image. You'll only get the message once and the message is updated each time you upload another uncategorized file. Categorization at upload is easy, just press the + and add something relavant (for example writers or poets from the United States). If this is to difficult for you, you could always have a look at {{Bots}}. Multichill (talk) 14:26, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Since it look like you are doing great work and trying hard, please let me give you an outside perspective. I am an experienced editor on the English WP (13,000+ edits, started in 2006.) I find that uploading images is an extremely awkward and time-consuming process. Most of the steps the uploader must go through are there to comply with the law, so we have no easy way to make the process simpler. So, after getting through the whole process, I feel I've accomplished something. Imagine my dismay when I get a message on my talk page that strongly implies that I failed to perform a mandatory step. Regardless of your intent, as seen by the reader (me, in this case) this is not "friendly" in any sense of the word. The terse uncommented add-ons just rub it in, as did the e-mail I got (four weeks later, for some reason) informing me of the note on my talk page. I just spent about 45 minutes looking at the categorization system here at commons, and I find it intractable. I cannot find a simple tree root from which I can easily pick categories. In particular, the "categories" block on the fill-in form does not have useful instructions, nor does it state or imply that an entry is required or even desired. This block on this form is your primary initial point of contact with the "new" users you are trying to reach with your message. May I reccommend that you add a one-line note below the block that says: Categories are really important. Please help. [[How to easily find categories]]. The link should go to a short page that gives step-by-step instructions for new users, starting from a link to a usable top-level category. As a separate reccommendation, please change the wording of your robot's message. you should say "Please help, we are trying to place all images into the correct categories so users can find proper images for wikipedia articles. While it is not madatory to add categories when you add a new image, it is a big help. We currently have a big backlog, Please see [[How to add categories]]. If you can use my help on (e.g., as a reviewer or as a tester) please let me know. -Arch dude (talk) 16:51, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

batch of 100,000 media files

I have downloaded over 100,000 media files from http://nasser.bibalex.org/ . These are egyptian public domain media files and can be uploaded to commons for educational purposes. I was wondering how I could upload them the most efficient way. The problem that arises is the description page of each media file, categorization and all the problems that were also with the german archives donation. So please can someone tell me how I would be going on uploading this the best way? I'd have no problem devoting all my bandwith for uploading these media files to commons for days ahead. --Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 19:11, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Irritant

/Pieter Kuiper (talk) 18:43, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Categorization by gallery page

Hi Multichill. When User:BotMultichillT make categorization as here, the first possibility should be to create a new category of the same name as is the name of the gallery page. Beh! Tu devis fazer o seguinte:

Why Double Picture?

Please help me. Your bot categorised my image to that Category the whole gallery is in. So for one they are doubled and for the second they are forced out of the context they have only together. Category:Nachlass_Wolf_Jacob_Stromer--heiner (talk) 11:11, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Galleries don't replace categories. Every image should be categorized. For more information see Commons:Categories. Multichill (talk) 11:15, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
As I read in three languages now, the author (thats me) can decide how to do it. Since I had to learn how to do "gallery", I changed it afterwards. It would be sufficient for me if You told me a workaround. There are really big galleries coming soon in that category. If they all would be doubled, the page would be chaos.--heiner (talk) 11:42, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
So you should put these images in relevant categories too. Multichill (talk) 13:03, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Categorie toevoegen?

Multichill (talk) 13:07, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Carte Cassini

HI, Please could you help me and add categories to the image Carte Cassini Haute Isle ? I have not found how to modify the caracteristics. The image is free (licence GNU). Thanks for your help. Best regards, Meyrac.

Sure, it's in Category:Old maps of France now. Multichill (talk) 13:13, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

These files are categorized by a template {{PD-Brockhaus&Efron}}, but your bot BotMultichillT does not notice it. --Bkmd (talk) 14:36, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

No, my bot ignores it. {{PD-Brockhaus&Efron}} adds a source/licence category. All the images should be in a topic category too like Category:Hydraulic rams. Multichill (talk) 13:11, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Missing category

Hello. Thanks for the 'heads up' but I was wondering what happened to the category section as it was not on the forms yesterday - I assumed that Wiki had somehow changed its system. It was on the forms which were not 'your own work' RSLlGriffith (talk) 18:55, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

More users were complaining about this. Is it back again? You should enable hotcat. You can find it at Special:Preferences -> Gadgets -> Tools for categories -> Hot cat. Multichill (talk) 13:15, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

I didn't find !!!

As you teched me, I put every picture in a category. But this last picture it was not the windows of category to V in it.

Can you help me?

Thanks a lot

Category:Coats of arms to be classified

The images in this category are often exactly identified according to the precise name of the municipality, or the relevant biographical details of a historical person -- they're just not classified. I fail to see how the proposed rename would improve anything... AnonMoos (talk) 17:05, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Replied at Category talk:Coats of arms to be classified. Multichill (talk) 20:45, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Unidentified maps

Hi and thanks for your edit on Category:Unidentified maps however, how are others supposed to know there are maps without categories if there don't see the original Category:Maps needing categories or Unidentified maps if there isn't a section on their maim maps page? I am cleaning up Images needing categories and have over 700 so far since last June. This just means I have to go back through and clean them up again. WayneRay (talk) 03:10, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Category:Unidentified maps is in Category:Maps so people can find it. I removed all the other categories because this category shouldn't be in there. I don't understand why you think you have to do something all over again. Could you explain yourself? Multichill (talk) 09:31, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Maybe I am wrong but if someone working on Maps of Spain for example, didn't know there was a Unidentified maps category or Identified maps that need categories as in the one I created: How would they know to check out all these missing maps and place them in Category:Maps of Spain etc . I meant if no one knows the images are there then I will have to go back through them and place each one in its proper Category. That's why I think the Unidentified maps hint should be placed temporarily in each countries map category. WayneRay (talk) 14:28, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

File:Mr mcclelland.jpg

Hi. I got a message from you about six images uploaded to the McClelland's Scotch Whisky Page, can you let me know where I can find out how to add these categories to the images? Best Regards James —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nevisdesign (talk • contribs) 10:09, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

You should probably read Commons:Categories. Category:Whisky from Scotland seems like a suitable category to me. Multichill (talk) 09:31, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Done right?

I added the missing categories (re my added image of a Greenland map) but only on German Wiki. Is that OK now?

There is a different English Wiki article on the same subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tugtupite but I don't see any links between both articles. On the German version one can see no countries showing Tugtupite pages, on the English Wiki one can see 4 national Wikis showing a Tugtupite page. Will an automatic addition / linkage between both pages be done? F.N. Berg (talk) 12:43, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Image:Elisabeth roses.jpg and Image:Chocolate covered bacon.JPG

Your bot tells me these images are uncategorized; however, when I look at them, here, they have tons of categories attached to them. Please advise; thank you. 75.76.162.50 14:56, 27 February 2009 (UTC) (Drmies)

I checked again, this time after signing in ;), and I still don't see how they are uncategorized. If I click on the 'check them now' link under File:Chocolate_covered_bacon.JPG, for instance, I see Category:Pork, Category:Chocolate, Category:Desserts by country, Category:Cuisine of the United States. Does 'check' have a technical meaning I don't understand? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 06:10, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
