Reuse of your kimono squid photoEdit

Hello! I really like this picture. I used it to make a comic, which you can see here -- http://curefornightmares.com/short-stories/nostrils -- if you're curious.

I linked to your WikiMedia user page, but I could attribute you some other way, if you prefer. Let me know: andrew@tosk.in --Android the Andrew (talk) 05:54, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Images from East TimorEdit

Hi Nick! I added some of your great Flickr-images from East Timor here last night. Congratulations for this incredible beautiful pictures. Can you help maybe to make a closer localization of some images? Was this picture made in Aileu or another district? Do you have pictures of Monte Mundo Perdido or other places in East Timor? I am always on the search for images for my ET-articles in German Wikipedia. Greetings, --Patrick (talk) 13:23, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Patrick for adding them. I am systematically going through my archives to get the higher resolution versions of these same images to add to Commons. I took more photos of Mundo Perdido and will upload the good ones after working on them (once I find them!!!). Thanks again! Nick - - Nhobgood (talk) 18:50, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Good Morning, Nick! Great work, yesterday. By the way: I saw, there are a lot of pics double. Can you mark the double pics to be deleted? By the way, please tell me, when you are uploading new images of East Timor, so I can use them in Wikipedia immediatly. And I can help you to categorize them. Greetings, --Patrick (talk) 14:01, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Cheers. I had already marked all but one duplicate for deletion but it is not happening very fast. If they do not disappear in the next few days, I will put another speedydeletion request on them. I am presently working on my Underwater archives, so most of what you will see will be below the surface. I will give you a signal when I start on the terrestrial series as well. Thanks for your work on this. - - Nick Nhobgood (talk) 14:55, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

NudibranchiaEdit

Hello Nhobgood,
Thanks a lot for all the beautifull pictures of Nudibranchia!

I changed some of their categories to follow the rule "Don't put an article/category in 2 categories if one category is placed in the other one".
So a picture cannot be in its species category + in its genus category + in its family category... (can you imagine how many pictures would be in Mollusca?).
Mostly people place their image in Nudibranchia because:

  • the species is unknown (in which case it should go to Unidentified Nudibranchia where specialist will try to identify a more precise Taxon)
  • the species is known but the category doesn't exist (in which case we have to create the cat for them).
  • because they are not used to wikicommons ;-) (in which case we have to move the picture in the species cat)
  • if the image represent all the species contained within the cat (Here, it would be a drawing of the general shape of a nudibranch)

So people like me look in upper categories like Nudibranchia to find if there aren't new pictures of species new for wikicommons.
Once we have moved all the pictures in the correct categories (which we sometimes create with a big joy ;-)), there are very few pictures left the those upper categories (drawings mainly).
But we will have to come back later for the same job.
I hope it helped.
Thks again for the pictures. Cheers Liné1 (talk) 09:13, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

If you want to provide a general view of multiple sea slugs, why don't you put your pictures in Category:Sea slug or Category:Nudibranch?
As those are commons names cat, they don't need Taxonavigation and escape the precedent rules.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 09:25, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for your diligent work in categorizing images and your guidance above. In the future I will make sure not to duplicate categorization, reducing the amount of work for all of us. Regards - Nick Nhobgood (talk) 11:04, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Image of starfish red komodoEdit

Dear Nhobgood,

I work for the french Museum of natural history. We are updating the multimedia devices in the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution and one of this device treats about eukaryotes (most of living organisms). I'm looking for pictures and found your picture of starfish on Wikimedia :

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Starfish_red_komodo.jpg

There is a representation of the groups of eukaryotes in the Gallery, and for every group we would like to show a picture of the animal in his natural area. This is a non-commercial use.

Do you agree if we use your picture in this device ? Of course your name will appear in the device.

We would be very pleased to invite you at the Grande galerie if you go to Paris once a time.

Thank you,

Best regards,

File:Wirecoral goby.jpgEdit

Hi, I was wondering if you could add some Latin id, at least perhaps to genus level, to the image description. I googled triplefin, and may have incorrectly concluded that it's a Helcogramma, which is usually referred to as a blenny - but apparently these are taxonomically distinct from gobies? Maybe you can shed some light, cheers! Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 21:44, 24 August 2010 (UTC) (And the coral as well, if you can?)

  • Oops! Looks like it is a whip coral dwarf Goby, ( Bryaninops youngei ) and not a triplefin. I will try and determine what this one is to the species level and also the coral which I suspect is a black coral. Thanks for catching that. Nick Nhobgood (talk) 22:40, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Category:Marine life of HaitiEdit

Citron - A quick question: Over the weekend I uploaded around 70 images under the subject category. I sent the category link to a friend and when they view it, only 17 images appear in the category while I can see all 85 that are in there. Is this a problem with my friend's browser ? How are they seeing something different from what I see ? Milles mercis -Nick Nhobgood (talk) 10:55, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nick!
I'm sorry to answer you too late! For your question, I don't understand, the category works perfectly for me! Maybe your friend has few problemes of connexion or maybe commons had a bug when he looked the category!
I profit of this message for tell you that I like very much your photographic work! I know, you have noticed that I promote some of your pictures for FP label! I want to continue do it, if you're okay of course! Actually, I am currently taking lessons of scuba diving for able to dive into the sea! =D Your job is a really good motivation for continue it! Thanks you very much for sharing it! Best regards. --Citron (talk) 19:33, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Citron - I appreciate your nominations, thanks! I am glad that seeing all the interesting things the sea has to offer, keeps you motivated to dive. It is a great feeling. With that, I share a quote with you from a great diver who helped make important advances in diving during his lifetime:

"From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free." Jacques Yves Cousteau Thanks again - - Nick Nhobgood (talk) 23:03, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Next questionsEdit

  1. File:Tunicate medley komodo.jpg: The file history shows this file to have been flipped relative to an earlier, low-res upload (note: flipped rather than rotated). I know that some of these species are asymmetric, so it would be good if you could confirm that the current orientation is the correct one. Thanks. Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 13:23, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
PLW, Neither photo is flipped. The hi-res is a different shot which better depicts the tunicates. You will notice that in one photo, the lower valve on the white/purple Polycarpa aurata is open and in the other, it is partially closed. Nhobgood (talk) 17:10, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
  1. File:Giant clam black&white komodo.jpg would be Tridacna maxima? Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 09:36, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
The differences between T. maxima and T. squamosa are hard to tell without seeing the shells. I would go with squamosa in this case but not 100% sure.Nhobgood (talk) 17:10, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

PLW - Thanks for the note and the nomination. I see that you reverted to the original upload. I was going to suggest such, as the colors are saturated above the normal in the first set of changes. The colors in this coral were especially vibrant under artificial light. There is a large color range in these corals with some lacking contrast and others with rich green valleys and warm ridges such as this one. Nhobgood (talk) 16:23, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nick,

I noticed that the title for the seahorse photo on the Wikipedia article for seahorses should be H. histrix (not H. hystrix).

Thanks for correcting this,

Getting a FPEdit

How to get a Featured Picture title for my image. I really think i have a few good images that can come up to the Featured pictures list. Could u tell me the exact procedure i have to do for me to get the Featured Picture status for my own image. And i'm new to wikipedia, i'm not among the great ones.

Hi NickEdit

I would like to use your photo of the Cypraea Mappa in a book I am writing as an example of Mother Nature's maps. Is that okay? Will give photo credit. Jill Berry jill@jillberrydesign.com

Congrats on foto acceptance to RPHDEdit

Boulder Brain Coral

Congratulations, your image of the Boulder Brain Coral has been accepted for the W:Radio Paradise RPHD broadcast! It will be in rotation with thousands of other outstanding photographs, at:

Thank you very much for donating this image to the Creative Commons. I've embedded the following caption, with attribution:

In order to convert the image to HD 16:9 format, I photoshopped in some additional background on the right margin of the image. With the central focus on the brain coral, I don't think anyone will notice, but FYI . . . The derivative image is thumbnailed to the right.

I hope that you will listen to Radio Paradise, one of the pioneering, and premier, internet radio stations. Once you are a member of our community of listeners, perhaps you'll consider contributing other photographs to the RPHD broadcast.

Thanks again!

Euprymna speciesEdit

A couple pictures have emerged on Wikipedia as "Euprymna scolopes" that are not actually this bobtail squid. They look like a relative, probably a Euprymna, and were taken in East Timor. Euprymna scolopes is limited to Hawaii and Midway islands. I'm new to the Wiki editing but have deleted them from the Euprymna scolopes wikipedia site. It would be nice if all the pictures of this bobtail squid from East Timor were corrected so that they are not labeled "Euprymna scolopes". The confusion seems to have extended to some other pages.

Thanks

File:Acraea zetes caterpillar to pupae to butterfly metamorphosis by Nick Hobgood.jpgEdit

We don't have individual images of the subject to describe Acraea zetes; so it will be nice if you provide them. Otherwise we have to chop it into its components. :( JKadavoor Jee 14:47, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Jkadavoor - thank you for the note. You seem to have located the original images on my Flickr site. Is this not sufficient evidence that I am the copyright holder. I ask because the original images are deep in my archives and will take time to look for them, rework them and upload all the components to Wikimedia. Thanks. Nhobgood (talk) 08:42, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
I've no doubt on you as the copyright holder. But individual file are more useful to describe Wikipedia articles. So it will be very helpful if you can provide them. Take time, and have a nice day. JKadavoor Jee 08:47, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
