There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

CategoriesEdit

Dear Nightscream,

Could you be more specific when assigning categories to you (well made) photographs. Three categories a picture would be enough. For instance , this picture,

has nothing to do with Category:Statues by century. You need to define what century and then place it in the appropraite Century category. If it's a sculpture at the University of New Mexico you could make a category "Sculptures at the University of New Mexico", then assign a category within this category that links to public art in New Mexico.

Best regards, Brbbl (talk) 13:19, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I didn't know there was a limit. Thanks for the heads-up. But what if I have a pic that actually qualifies for more than three categories? Nightscream (talk) 14:59, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, there's not really a limit, I'm sorry a gave you that impression. It's just that when you put a picture in a category say "Statues in Denver", you don't have to put the same picture in the category "Statues in Colorado". Because the category "statues in Denver" is already a child of "statues in Colorado". The only exception I would make is the Statue of Liberty for instance. This would also be appropraite in "Statues in the United States" because is widely known as a symbol of America. But that's a personal matter. PS: In the Dutch Statue category we define statue as representing a famous person, known by name. Everything else is a sculpture. That would make the Statue of Liberty a sculpture too by-the-way. Best regards Brbbl (talk) 15:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Wow, User:Gerardus just informed me that sculptures in the USA cannot be photographed under the Creative Commons lisence. The creator of the sculpture is also the owner of your photograph see Freedom of Panorama - United States. Sorry Brbbl (talk) 09:56, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Don't place an item into a category and its parent (e.g., Put it in Chocolates, not Chocolates and Sweets)
Hi Nightscream, please take a look at Commons:Categories for how to use categories. You're currently overcategorizing your pictures, see the picture here on the right. Multichill (talk) 15:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

CategoriesEdit

Hi. Thank you for categorizing images, but please take a look at Commons:Categories. Note that Commons has categories within categories. Every image in Category:Marina Sirtis is already within Category:1955 births and Category:Actresses from the United Kingdom. The subcategories within Category:Actresses are all subcategories of Category:Women. Therefore this edit of yours added unnecessary redundant categories; I therefore reverted that edit. I hope that's clear. If you have any questions you can't find an answer to, feel free to ask. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 09:10, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, NightScream! I'm currently editing an article on Doug Jones on a German fan-wiki dedicated to Coldmirror (a very popular YouTube-user from Germany, who is promoting Doug's new movie "My Name Is Jerry" through her YT channel) and wondered if and under what circumstances I could use your marvelous picture of Doug. Here's a Link to the German article, if you want to check in on it. Since I'm a bit shy about posting my mail adress on the internet, please just answer here, I will check in again later. Thanks. Regards --91.55.242.208 12:02, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

I couldn't find a page on which I could respond to you, so hopefully you'll see this message. I released the photo into the public domain under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license, as is indicated on that photo's page, which means you can use it for any purpose, so long as you attribute it to me. My name, as you can see in the photo's file name, is Luigi Novi, so if you can place a credit on it wherever you publish it, that would be fine with me. And thank you for the compliment. Good luck! Question & OTRS permissionEdit

I don't know if your question is already answered by Infrogmation, but here is an addition. OTRS Permission can only be granted by the photographer, not by the subject. It's the photographer who owns the copyright.
Fair Use policy only applies in certain countries, not on the Dutch wikipedia for instance. --Brbbl (talk) 06:05, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Categorization of Jim Lee imagesEdit

I recategorized Jim Lee to include 1964 births and comic book creators. Please take a look at Commons:Categories, specifically, the Over-categorization section. It has already been pointed out to you twice, above, that you needlessly are over-categorizing images. If you need clarification, please ask for help. Thanks. --BrokenSphere 06:05, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

What I would have done was add Lee to the comic book creator category (which I did), vs. categorizing each of the individual images in the Jim Lee category as such. This way all those images are included within that larger category because the specific subcategory, Jim Lee, is within it. It's also less work to do this sort of thing at a category instead of going image by image. BrokenSphere 05:03, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
No, it's easy to edit categories, the same as making edits to an image. BrokenSphere 01:20, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Here's what I did for North Bergen. --BrokenSphere 22:58, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Nightscream!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Nice catsEdit

Thanks, for fixing up some of my sloppy categories and imprecise descriptions of northern Hudson County pictures. Of course as it says above some of your own good new pix have no cats at all yet. Picky, picky, the nitpickers are always complaining that we're using too many cats or not enough or the wrong ones. And they're right, darn it, though hope persists that I'm doing better at it this year than last. I missed you at the conference at Washington Square a few weeks ago; met a bunch of nice people, smarter and mostly younger and cuter than me as usual, and learned a hundredth of the important things they were saying, as usual. I hope to see you again when the regular meetings resume at Columbia U. Tomorrows plan is to join a biker gang to Ridgewood. More pictures. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:49, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the message. Wilco on the name. No more pictures this week for me; the group cancelled due to rain and warning of thunderstorm. I stayed home and did some description editing and cat wrangling. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:27, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Photo on Soupy Sales Wikipedia PageEdit

Dear Nightscream,

I hope I'm posting this message in the right place. I would simply send you an email if I could; however, I have so far been unable to locate contact information for you, other than this page.

Anyway, I have a request regarding the Wikipedia page for the recently-deceased Soupy Sales: The large photo of Sales at the top right of the page shows him at the end of his life, in extremely frail health. Is it possible for you please to replace this photo with a more flattering and representative one, one that shows him during the peak of his performing career?

As a fan of Soupy Sales, I was taken aback, and even somewhat offended, to see that the only likeness of him on his Wikipedia page is one that shows him in a state of severe decline. I would have simply replaced the photo myself with a more representative image, except that I am not certain of the copyright ramifications.

I hope that there is something that can please be done about this. Thank you.

DefaultsortEdit

There's a tag that can be added to categorize something a certain way across multiple categories without having to put their name in multiple times in all categories the way it's meant to be sorted. E.g., instead of putting in Doe, John behind say, 5 categories to sort it that way, will do this for you across all 5 and you only have to type it in once. BrokenSphere 04:22, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Well yes, the categorizations should be as specific as possible. My original message though is relating to how categories/images are sorted within categories. E.g. here, instead of inserting Horn, Greg into each category sort each time, the defaultsort parameter will do that for all of them at once. Does that make sense? BrokenSphere 00:43, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
OK. My initial point was about sorting only, not about categorizing as specificlaly as possible. BrokenSphere 19:24, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Cat movingEdit

Sorry to be so late getting back; been busy preparing for retirement from the Phone Company next week. No, far as I know there is no way to move a category to correct its spelling or its unwise naming. If there were, I might have moved Category:Von Steuben Day long ago. Must make a new cat, move all the contents, and finally reduce the old cat to a redirect. However, it remains an academic question, not requiring resolution until someone starts uploading pictures of Steuben parades or Cuba Day parades held in other places. DefaultsortEdit

Hi, sets the default sort keys, so there is no need to repeat the sort key as piped argument with the categories, unless the sort should be different from the defaultsort. Enjoy the work. --Foroa (talk) 07:42, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

category:Comics writer/artistsEdit

Hi, I noticed that you are doing good work here. Thank you for that. I deleted category:Comics writer/artists because we don't want slashes in category names, and it makes no sense to make all sorts of combination categories writers/artists, illustrators/writers, ...

Please not that specifies the sort keys, so it makes no sense to add them again as sort key. To the contrary: if the sort has to be changes, we would need to change all keys, instead of one single key.

Keep up the good work. --Foroa (talk) 08:13, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Fireworks pictures and all the restEdit

As I look down this page I don't see anything at all but deletion requests. Now I have another one: please get the fireworks pictures out of the Hudson River category. We are not going to use anything with your name on it except as the contributor of the picture, and then only your login name. Any insistence on no use except with the personal attribution you require is completey contrary to everything WP stands for. This is not good work at all as the previous commenter suggested. It is you trying to use WP to advertise yourself as an illustrator. I for one would appreciate it if you would stop. WP is a non-profit organization relying on the contributions of its editors. Your pictures are NOT contributions. As payment you require that we use your name in the way you specify. We are not helping you build an illustrator business so please stop. If you do I thank you in advance. You can contribute anonymously like any other editor. If you do not stop judging from your talk page you may be seeing more of WP administrators than you may find comfortable. That isn't my field so I am only making these private suggestions in the interest of convincing you to be more helpful. No one but us need know.Botteville (talk) 02:20, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

How are you, buddy. Thanks for your polite reply. As I understand it, the reply is basically, the restriction you placed on the copyrights of your pictures apply only to outside users, is that correct? WP users can use at will on WP, is that correct? If that is the case I might have been a bit hasty. I suppose I was looking at all these deletions on the talk page. Pictures aren't yet my bag. Maybe you aren't an advertiser. In that case I have a request for you. I noticed that "Category:Hudson River" had hundreds of pictures in it. That in itself is not necessarily bad but a big chunk of them were fireworks. I really don't see how most of these would be used in articles. It seems to me a few would do. I suppose someone could put a reference to these fireworks in one article. In that case one would want to see them clustered under a single title. I suppose they are under the fireworks categories. But, this is Hudson River. They really don't concern the Hudson River. My next thought was to create a subcategory, "Fireworks on the Hudson River" so the user could elect to look at them or not just as he pleases. The system would not put it up! It puts up all my other subcategories. I figured there was some sort of interference. Do you know anything about that? Don't you agree, they ought to be a distinct subcategory? I don't deny they are quite good quality; I suppose you have expensive cameras. But why, I thought, put them in this unlikely place? And why use your powers to block subcategorization? That is the point where I took you for an advertiser. Maybe I was wrong; however, the problem remains. Should these be under Hudson River? If affirmative, should they not be subcategorized to get them out of the way, or to get them more easily in the way if one should decide to view them? If I want to see Hudson River but not fireworks it is a bit irritating to have to look at dozens of fireworks pictures. Well, you say, you have years on WP, some as administrator. As long as you do a good job as administrator that is fine with me. What is your take on this? What would you do? Why did you put these all under Hudson River? Why can I not subcategorize? You should be aware, I am not by choice an administrator. That does not mean other administrators do not review my efforts. With this comment, since you do have years of experience, presumably on Commons, I leave this matter for you to fix. I'll be curious to see how experienced administrators handle issues such as this. I know you can't necessarily do as YOU like. Later.Botteville (talk) 13:50, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Botteville, general interpretation of CC requirements say that a link back to a page where the author is given is sufficient. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:27, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I am no real expert in license_languange. I would say, Nightscream's artistic way of interpreting (but not overriding) the attribution is a bit of a border case, but no real drama. If you are in doubt, throw it on COM:AN or so to get a round of legaleese. --Foroa (talk) 14:59, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
We appear to have reached an agreement. If nightscream wants them in and they are free use to WP editors on WP they should stay in, but he agrees they should be subcategorized. He does not have time to do it. For me this is a project I can slowly work on but then so are all the river pictures and any other general category that collected hundreds of pictures. I will work on it from time to time. I presume that because nightscream is agreeing it is not he blocking my subcategorization. Maybe there's another implemetation lag. No rush. Sooner or later I'll find the answer. Matter closed I believe.Botteville (talk) 16:09, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Category:Wendy and Richard Pini‎Edit

I have a photo of the Pinis together that I can upload soon, that would make this category still valid. Of course Wendy Pini can be a subcategory of it. BrokenSphere 19:37, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

When I created the article I put them together because that was how the English Wikipedia article was/is. If you think that 2 separate categories for both is more workable, those can just be linked back to the Wikipedia article and the dual category can be redirected. Removal of galleriesEdit

If you're going to accuse an editor/administrator/photographer with over five years' worth of contributions under his belt of vandalism, then I might suggest that before doing so, you exclude other, less nefarious explanations for whichever edits you're referring to, and perhaps point to those edits in question with diffs when you leave a message for that editor. I apologize if I've made errors in editing or judgment, but knee-jerk accusations of vandalism of someone without doing this, and/or without checking that person's edit history, isn't in the best spirit of good faith. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 01:31, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough; I should have taken the time to write a personal note instead. I'm wondering how you came to the conclusion that the galleries Aria Giovanni, Mýa, Ashley Tisdale, Asia Carrera, Amber Benson, J. K. Rowling, Ron Jeremy, Linda Hamilton, Dominic Monaghan, Aaron Stanford, Robert Menendez, Maggie & Don Thompson, Alan Moore, Molly Crabapple, Brian Michael Bendis, and Jeph Loeb should look as they do in the revisions I've linked to here.
Galleries and categories are not mutually redundant. Even if you believed they were, I would expect an experienced user to nominate pages for deletion rather than to simply remove the categories from the gallery, blank them entirely, or leave them in a state of complete brokenness. You'll notice that your edits to those galleries were reverted by several other users as well.
Please respect my request to keep discussions where they started, as this makes conversations easier to follow. I am watching this page, so I will see responses made here. LX (talk, contribs) 05:54, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I apologize if I was in error. I saw those and thought someone created them redundantly. And no, I didn't notice anyone reverting what I did (though I would've surmised that you did after your initial message). My knowledge of the Commons is still somewhat behind my knowledge of Wikipedia, and although my understanding of it has made certain strides of late, obviously this illustrates that I still have much to learn.

Out of curiosity, what is the purpose of galleries that are not served by category pages? How are they not redundant? Looking over the relevant page, the distinction between "all files" and a "sample" or "the best" seems arbitrary and superfluous. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 05:59, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, and it's reassuring to know that we hopefully won't have to do any more reverting. :) Some of the arguments for (and against) having both galleries and categories can be found at Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote. I personally prefer categories for the most part and spend most of my time organizing those, but I can see some of the merits of galleries. For example, I've worked on sorting through Category:Stockholm, which contained hundreds of unsorted files at the top level when I started, and which is now fairly neatly organized into subcategories by topic and geographical subdivision. By contrast, the gallery Stockholm (which I haven't really worked on) might give a better overview of the subject by bringing in content from various subdirectories, organizing it into sections and providing descriptions. LX (talk, contribs) 06:15, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I reverted some of your "gallery bypass"/redirect operations too. Maybe have a look at very good galleries such as William Lyon Mackenzie King visual chronology, Kölner Dom and Brugge to better understand the potential of galleries. Of course, if we delete all small, upcoming galleries, then we will never have proper galleries. --Foroa (talk) 07:19, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Union City sealEdit

Hi. Did you by any chance inform the editor who uploaded the Union City seal that it was to be deleted and/or that it should've been uploaded to the English Wikipedia? Nightscream (talk) 01:55, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I did notify them of the deletion, see User talk:UCstaffer. I would have uploaded it to the EN wiki myself, but I don't think it had a source. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 15:53, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
The reason I ask is that I was having a lot of trouble determining what license was to be used for municipal city property, since the only templates or policies I could find for government images were for federal or state one. I ultimate went to Union City's City Hall, where I asked one of the government administrators to upload it. UCstaffer was that person. He created that account in order to do so, and hasn't used it since, so I would imagine he never got your message. Had I known about this, I would've told him. Now I guess I have to go back to City Hall to ask him to reupload it. What license should we use? Do you know? Nightscream (talk) 20:18, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah, shit. Sorry about that, it wasn't clear from the info. Maybe you can get the deletion reversed by an admin? I'm not sure if the city can place the seal under a free license. If they can, they should make their choice in license from this list. They should file an OTRS ticket to make clear that permission is explicitly granted and put OTRS pending on the image page. Now, if they can't choose a free license for the logo legally, then it could still be used on the EN wiki under fair use. You might be able to get an admin to help with getting the deleted image out and putting it on EN. Try asking an admin at COM:ANB. Again, sorry for the trouble. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 23:25, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Could you add the geocoding of this image os yours?

I believe it could be nominated to "Valued Image", but geocoding would be necessary.

Says Commons:Valued images:
"Valued images are images which are considered especially valuable by the Commons community for use in online content within other Wikimedia projects. A valued image is considered to be the most valued illustration of its kind by the Commons community", and that's exactly what I believe your file is.
Anyway, one of the criteria established is "geocoding, when relevant". I don't know if that's the case, but Commons:Geocoding adresses this issue.
I'm new to Commons policies and procedures, but I'm trying to help out as much as possible.

The same point applies. In the future, please do not upload over another image. Please create a new page. Then link back to the source image. This tool will make it much easier for you to do that. -- Cirt (talk) 08:02, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
And I'll echo Cirt's comment with regards to the crop you did of File:Snooki in Chicago.jpg. Make a new image instead of over-righting the old one, as a crop such as what you did significantly alters the image. For instance, what if the uncropped image was used in an article to illustrate a point about the yellow dress? All of a sudden anyone looking at the article sees an image which doesn't match up with the article's discussion. Tabercil (talk) 15:44, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
Which is why I check which articles use a given photo prior to altering it. If I find it being used by articles in which the altered version would be inapplicable, then indeed I will upload the altered version separately. This was not the case with the Obama or Snooki photos, which are only being used in articles where the cropped versions are of better use. This is why I don't see why the considerations you point out apply to those two, nor why you and he decline to answer my quite reasonable question: If uploaded new versions over the old ones is not desired, why does every image file's page present a tool for doing so as an option? Using a tool whose link is on the same page as the image is far easier than one on a different page, and as long as that option is there, I'm disinclined to create new pages for each version of an image, particularly given the number of images I alter (most of which ones I take for use in specific articles). Nightscream (talk) 19:25, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
 • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment - Nightscream, you have now been advised by two different users to modify your inappropriate behavior with regard to uploading over existing files on this site. Please take this advice under consideration, and modify your future behavior patterns accordingly. If the inappropriate behavior pattern continues, it might necessitate being reported and/or admin actions. -- Cirt (talk) 14:51, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
Your response is less than satisfactory. Note that my own personal rationale was but one of the multiple reasons cited above, the majority of other ones are not related. I hope you take the above comments from two different users under advisement, and adjust future edit patterns. -- Cirt (talk) 15:46, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Nightscream, it might be a better practice to upload a new version with a new file name, and then replace it with an image used in an article. Regards.--Mbz1 (talk) 16:07, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. How can you replace an uploaded image with one used in an article? Nightscream (talk) 17:18, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Another question, Nightscream. Do you know any artist or painter that would appreciate that his works are cropped or its colors changed ? What if people would start cropping your images because they prefer landscape instead of portrait, or a bit more blue (or any other reason) ? --Foroa (talk) 17:32, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

You mean like when someone took this photo I took of Richard Dreyfuss, and cropped it without asking me, even though I wasn't sure (and am still not sure) that I like it that way?

Let them.

If it serves a given article better, than it's justified. It's why, for example, the consensus decided in this discussion that a cropped photo was better for an article's main Infobox portrait, even though the photographer complained that he didn't like that, and tried to change it back.

The operative phrase, Foroa, is "his works". All content on the Commons is free content, so a given painting on the commons is not "his". The highest criterion should be what serves a given article, and not the whims of the image's creator. If someone changes an image that another disagrees with, then they (or if necessary, a group discussion), can hash it out. Sometimes another set of eyes can improve an image, the same way it can improve other aspects of an article. The original image is still there on the same page, and in the case of my images, they're still on my computer. (Another user on the Admin Noticeboard has made the distinction that uploading over the original can be done for minor changes, but that things like major crops should employ alternate image uploads instead.) If cropping a given image for a particular purpose is good enough for the Mona Lisa, then it's good enough for me. :-) Nightscream (talk) 18:57, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Category:University of WisconsinEdit

I see you added University of Wisconsin System schools like University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to the category. I think it's misplaced. These schools are not the University of Wisconsin, which has historically be attached to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. These "state" schools have never been named what you have categorized them as. So I'm fine if you want to change that category name to University of Wisconsin System, but I disagree with University of Wisconsin. There are long discussions about the topic on the English Wikipedia. Royalbroil 13:21, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Category:Movie theatersEdit

Hi,

back in 2010 you made the Category:Movie theaters while the Category:Cinemas already existed. More people seem to place images in this category, so I made it a redirect. The reason I'm writing to you is that you placed this category in the Category:Entertainment venues in the United States and Category:Cinemas in New Jersey. This is not in line with the hierarchy of categories: not all theaters are in the US. Please be more careful when making new categories. --IIVeaa (talk) 18:41, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Permission boxEdit

The coding and wording that I used is adapted from about 3 users who have a similar permissions template for their uploads. I looked through the users who are recognized as being outstanding photographers and who were still active for ideas. You are welcome to adapt what I used for my current permission box. BrokenSphere (Talk) 14:32, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

I tried plugging your name into the template directly to see how it works - the result is here. You could copy the coding in your own namespace (e.g. User:Nightscream/Credits), modify the wording as you see fit, and put it into your image pages as a template. BrokenSphere (Talk) 14:52, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Taking this from my en profile - I was playing Final Fantasy X-2 when I registered and my username is derived from the Sphere Break mini game, although the term "broken sphere" is not actually used in relation to this mini game. BrokenSphere (Talk) 14:44, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
That clause applies more to commercial or for profit use of the image, which as I understand it is allowed by the CC. It is adapted from what I've seen other users put into their credit boxes in case these circumstances arise. You are welcome to modify or keep it out. BrokenSphere (Talk) 15:41, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
The idea is that if someone would like to use one of my images in a commercial manner (and there is a lot of latitude as to what "commercial" means), I would like to receive some consideration if possible. It's not required, but it's a bonus if they do choose to go ahead and go through the process. Of course they may go ahead and use the image (s) anyway with or without attribution and with or without notification and compensation, as the enforceability of this clause is as you can guess, haphazard to nonexistent at best. There are many other contributors here who do not have such language if they use a customized attribution/copyright template, it is up to each person how they want to deal with possible commercial use of their works that they choose to upload here. However bottom line the intent of putting media up here to share for me has always been to share what I can, not to make money off it (there are better places, obviously). I have found that editorial use in websites, articles, blogs or even offline as some people have notified me about, for me is generally OK. The contact me part is more of so that I know where the image is being used so that I can link to it using the published template. I don't claim to be an expert on CC or GFDL, so I hope that this discussion has not been too confusing for you! BrokenSphere (Talk) 15:19, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Nightsream. Pay attention ! All the aerial pictures that you have upload like this have a wrong location. It's not Ischia, but the bay of Baia (municipality of Bacoli), with the Castello Aragonese of Baia, not of Ischia (the Castello Aragonese of Ischia is on a little roun island!). Thanks for uploading File:Robliefeldpic.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, and Commons:Permission if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the OTRS-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Robliefeldpic.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

I'm not totally sure about this one, but I find it highly unlikely that the "author" (User:Ahwatukee) is the copyright holder, and thus has the legal right to release the image into the public domain. As there is no evidence provided, I've tagged it for deletion. Just thought you'd like to know. Cheers! (Note: I'll try to remember to check this page, but if you have anything fairly urgent to say in reply, it might be a good idea to direct your comments to my talk page over at the 'pedia.)Evanh2008 (talk) 10:20, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Category:Built_in_2011_in_New_JerseyEdit

Commons-emblem-issue.svg Category:Built_in_2011_in_New_Jersey has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Members of the Bling Ring gang.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Members of the Bling Ring gang.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:6.6.10StackMenendezByLuigiNovi6.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. (You can get a list of all your uploaded files using the Gallery tool.) Thank you.

Category:People from Red Hook, BrooklynEdit

Hello Nightscream,
the standard must be : People of Red Hook, not People from Red Hook :-) -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 21:27, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
P.S. That said, but where is L. Nichols? :)

Oh yes, here. Regards! -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 07:39, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
As for my experience, should be always categorized by the cities where they has born (if the category is available), then by the cities where they is notable for (ie.: it wouldn't be relevant if they has lived for two years in the city X if there's nothing relevant for their activity). Note that generally most categories like ie. "Alumni of the University of Milan" is already a subcategory of "People of Milan" thus could not be necessary overcategorize. Generally though one should be categorized by those place that are relevant for their notability. Anyway you can ask for further advice to Jim who is American and can explain better than me. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 17:56, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
Although I can't point to any good cite for it, "People from Red Hook" implies to me that the person was born there and grew up there. I probably would not use it unless the person had actually spent a good portion of his or her early life there. Further, it's not exact. I say that I am from Chicago, which is true -- I was born there and my parents lived there, but I was taken home from the hospital to a suburb where my grandfather lived, and I grew up in the city and various suburbs. On the other hand, "People of Red Hook" is for me a superset of the first. My parents are both "People of Chicago" even though neither was born there -- they spent the vast majority of their lives in the city or its suburbs from university until they retired. So, unless we are to have two categories -- "People born and brought up in Red Hook" and "People of Red Hook", I would opt for the latter and I would not use "People from Red Hook" in either case. .     Jim . . . .
