Hello, Paulae!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I put cats to all pics I upload. They don't show up after uploading the image. I never had this problem before, but had to recat all images I uploaded today as well, because none of my cats were added to the pic. Maybe someone should fix this. --Paulae (talk) 12:15, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Soso, sie "shoppen" also nicht "up"?
:-) --Paulae (talk) 12:17, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Stolperstein photo edit

I saw that you took a lot of pictures of different Stolpersteine in Berlin. In case you are still interested in this subject: I rewrote the German article on de:Fritz Pfeffer, who got a Stolperstein in Berlin in 2007. It is located on the corner of Passauer Straße/Lietzenburger Straße. Is it possible for you to take a picture of that stone? It would be great for the article. Greetings, --Paulae (talk) 14:43, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Okay, on my next trip to Berlin I will take a picture. I expect to go to Berlin in August. Jdsteakley (talk) 20:22, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pictures of AR edit

Hi! I haven't uploaded all my pictures of Alan Rickman to Commons because there is a lot of them, some of which are somewhat redundant and/or too fannish. I'm not sure it would be considered in scope to transfer them all, but I can import some more to allow more choice. Do tell me if there some you would like to see here. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 16:46, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for answering so quickly! I'd love to see that one on Commons, this one, this and this one. And I like the somewhat blurry version of this one too. It'd be be great to have them on Commons. --Paulae (talk) 18:40, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, I'll clean the original files and upload them on Commons. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:59, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Merci beaucoup! I'll try to be patient. --Paulae (talk) 18:56, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Gedenktafel Markt 19 (Weimar) Lilli Palmer.jpg edit

Also Skulpturen, Hausbemalungen etc.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

My uploads edit

You may revert my uploads over someone's photos, but please do not revert my original uploads - upload "your" versions instead. Materialscientist (talk) 21:43, 8 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Our primary purpose is serving Wikipedia projects (articles), not mass-storing images. Materialscientist (talk) 08:30, 9 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
You seem to forget that Nicola Perscheid has its own article and of course this article has a direct link to Commons to have a look at the photographs he took. You crop a square pic to make it an upright one. It's not the pic he as an artist made, but only a version that fits better in an infobox. It's ok to upload the cropped pic as a second one, but just don't put it over the original. Two versions and everything is fine + people wanting to use the pic in an article can choose if they want to use the original version or the cropped one. Afaik there is even a rule for that on Commons that tells people not to override an original version with an altered one. And btw no, I don't agree with your opinion that our primary purpose is to serve our own articles. Commons is a database that offers free (conc. license) pics for re-use by everyone. Otherwise we would upload all pics with an nd-license or copyrighted. And of course we have different versions of the same object and even of the same pic all over Commons. You just try to defend your wrong way of dealing with pics, which is even worse considering you're an admin. I won't discuss this any further. EOD --Paulae (talk) 10:59, 9 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

File:Carl Roux - Georg Friedrich Creuzer.jpg edit

Hi Paulae, maybe the file should be renamed because of confusing? Description readse: Bildnis des deutschen Philologen Georg Friedrich Creuzer, Lithographie von Joseph Nikolaus Peroux nach einem Gemälde von Jakob Wilhelm Roux, so nothing to do with Karl Roux? Or am I missing somthing? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 12:44, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I won't rename anything, just because someone overwrote my original upload by Carl Roux with a totally different picture by someone else, claiming it was due to quality reasons. The Carl Roux one didn't even have a background, so maybe someone should take the new picture and upload it separately with all the information that was added to describe the new picture. --Paulae (talk) 18:47, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Category:Maxime_Roy edit

Category:Maxime_Roy has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Please pay more attention before making false accusations edit

I refer to your comments at Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Deaths_from_drugs.png. Contrary to your accusations, I did not create the montage; see here for who created it. I only modified the latest version to replace one image after another user pointed out there was an issue with that single image. I am a volunteer trying to make things better, and routinely do so when given clear instructions; I didn't see your reply as I was not pinged. I explicitly stated in my response to you that I did not create the montage, which makes your aggressive rebuttal ("Why do such montages if you have no clue of licenses?") all the more confusing. I understand it's not your job to "fix this mess", but more detailed initial instructions and help, and less arrogance, would have been appreciated. Damien Linnane (talk) 00:29, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Lol, you arrived at this convo back then as the uploader, and now you make a fuss, because you weren't the uploader? I couldn't care less tbh, for the imagine got deleted, the disk was half a year ago, and I have no way to check if your claim is wrong or right. --Paulae (talk) 11:59, 26 November 2022 (UTC) Oh, and if you ever show up on my disk again, I will most definitely refer to your second try of uploading a montage which rightfully got another DR, and I will make fun of you, so please don't. :-D --Paulae (talk) 12:35, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
