Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Question concerning personality rights

Hi Maxim, I was about to nominate this picture on the german wikipedia. According to german law it is necessary to have the permission. American law is different so i am also not really sure how it is handled on commons....i guess it is ok. --AngMoKio (talk) 14:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

si j'ai bien compris, tu es Alexis (désolé de casser le mythe Paul Rudd ;) ), de je ne sais plus quelle classe du Lycée GdN de Noisiel. Je pensais que tu étais tombé sur ma page par hasard, mais en fait, tu contribues aussi :) Très jolies photos. Je suis forcément plus impressionné par le panorama :). Non je n'aimais pas forcément la photo au lycée car je n'ai commencé à prendre de photos que récemment, quand la technologie a rendu la chose facile...

Sorry, however I can't find rule about not to consider voices. It only politeness question. However all of them should be considered. Really sad :(. I am not an administrator, I the user only. However to challenge result is in any case very difficultly. Users can describe self reason in more details. This photo still very interesting, with the award or without the award.

Thanks for your quick answer. In the 'formal things' on the FPC page is written this : "Images can be culturally biased by the photographer and/or the observer. The meaning of the image should be judged according to the cultural context of the image, not by the cultural context of the observer. An image speaks to people, and it has the capacity to evoke emotion such as tenderness, rage, rejection, happiness, sadness, etc. Good photographs are not limited to evoking pleasant sensations..." and then : "Unreasonable reasons for opposing are: - "I don't like it", or other empty assessments". George asked me to give my opinion regarding this. (I am not an administrator, George, :-) ). Just consider what I say as a second opinion from a regular. I see your point, Paulrudd. It is an aspect which has come up from time to time. As far as I know the consensus has always been to include all the votes - also if no apparently valid reason is given for opposing. In the particular case I do find it unfortunate that these oppose reasons are used. Sometimes this can be excused by the editors not mastering the de facto language English that well, but the user pages for the two opposers indicate that they are quite good at English. Actually, there is a surprising similarity between those users pages and their common interest in, e.g., Sergei Rachmaninov. For it seems like they are quite inexperienced on COM:FPC and thus may not know the guidelines very well. The way is normally adressed is to appeal to the users to further detail their reasons for opposing and infrm them about specifics in the guidelines. Something the nominator did partially on the nomination page. If that does not yield a response, proceed to their respective talk pages. But these things are normally sorted out during the nomination phase. Once the nomination is closed, the convention is to consider all votes equally nomatter how good/poor reasons are given. That is, the closure is quite mechanical. So, I definately think George has done as one would normally do for such closures. But you are not alone in experiencing this. I have also tried it here.

If this is something you feel deeply about, you could bring it to the project talk page.

On a personal level, I would probably have opposed it during nomination, not due to the subject, but due to a too busy composition and "point and shoot character" of the photo. But that does not mean I do not think it is a very good or special photo, just not among the 1/2300 to become featured here. --Slaunger (talk) 16:59, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
