First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Really sorry, I have made a total rewrite of the script today (I have written it some months ago) and now shouldn't be problems at all. By the way, If you can test it (maybe uploading an image that you need to upload) can be a nice Idea :-) If the bot is still too fast (but it doesn't..) I will stop it ;) Sorry for the bug-problems, --Filnik 21:35, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. Tried it as suggested, and no problems with a five minute delay between upload and licence information add. PeterJewell 00:58, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, thank you :-) for the patience, the kindness and your help ^__^ Bye, --Filnik 05:44, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:BSicon_WBRUCKE.svg edit

Image deletion warning Image:BSicon_WBRUCKE.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Templates, categories and parserFunctions edit

I've improved the template {{Scans from 'The Book of the Motor Car', 1912}} and this should solve the categorization problem. It's done with "parser functions" (a good subject for searching, but there's a lot to them) so that it only categorizes when it's in the right place. See what you think.

I ought to do this properly, think it through and even make a meta-template for all these. Time! Andy Dingley (talk) 13:04, 20 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for making you more work! I sometimes find myself haunting Commons and refining image categories -- sometimes getting trapped for hours! I think it was quite late when I encountered this cat and I clicked on the "sub-cat" several times before I realised I was going round in circles! (Yes, I know that sounds daft...)
I know a little about templates and parser functions (I developed the RoutemapRoute template used to show arrowed directions on some railway/canal route maps at WP.) But this seemed to be a simple include/noinclude issue. When I discovered it wasn't, the only obvious action to prevent a recursive category was to copy the template content.
Your solution does appear to work. In answer to your comment, it should be possible to do your cat inclusion in the opposite direction -- ie ONLY include it in mainspace pages, rather than excluding it from cat namespace. That would avoid the user page issue you highlight. (The noinclude will handle the template page for you.) 'fraid you'll have to work out the parser code for yourself, as I don't know off-hand what the correct syntax would be. Fortunately, what you're trying to do is relatively simple.

Traction engines edit

Hi Peter, I just reverted your "steam-powered" category addition to "traction engines" because there is a "steam tractor" subcat, and as such, only that cat should have the "steam powered" category. However, on looking up Wikipedia, it seems that technically ALL traction engines are steam-powered. Now what should we do to clarify the situation here? Merge "Steam tractors" into "traction engines" and then make it redirect here in the future? Ingolfson (talk) 12:13, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, one of the defining features of a traction engine is it being steam-powered!
Unfortunately, the related terminology does not neatly fit into categories. 'Traction Engine' is a fairly generic term, and covers a number of different sub-types, of which the "steam tractor" is one. In the UK, the recognised sub-type "light steam tractor" would also be identified as (and equally correctly named) as a traction engine. You will find that some people refer to any type of traction engine as a steam tractor (which I realise is tending to undermine my argument!) but I'm not convinced that just converting Steam Tractor into a redirect is a good idea either: there are US-built steam vehicles that would not be called traction engines (there's a picture of a Best steam tractor, which is an excellent example). I felt that my categorisation reflected the appropriate subdivisions as best as could be expected.
Having seen that the category has been changed to Category:Steam-powered tractors, I would suggest that there is no longer a problem. I have re-added the correct category to the Traction Engine page and heavily revised the pre-amble to try and address any remaining issues. I have also removed 'steam-powered tractors' from the traction engines cat, if that's what is required to resolve this.
In due course we will need to create sub-cats for 'Agricultural engine' and 'light steam tractor', but these are rather harder to distinguish as they are much more 'general purpose' forms of traction engine.
Note that there are numerous mis-classified steam engine -related images. I am gradually sorting them, and creating the necessary categories as I go, but it is a time-consuming task...

Happy to go along with your suggestions. Cheers, Ingolfson (talk) 04:20, 20 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
