Quality images?
Hello. I have uploaded a few images as IQ candidates just to see what the QI standards are (I need to get better!) and have noticed that a number of Commoners are uploading dozens of images and promoting each other's images. The quality of some images promoted is poor. You have, I notice, many images of the Longines event promoted. How is this acceptable within Commons QI guidelines? Are all of them Commons 'most valuable images'? I don't think so, with the rider's face obscured in many. You have some super QI promotions, but also quite a number that I cannot understand why they have been promoted. I also have noticed that you promote many of MattBuck's quite ordinary images. I have just looked at his most recent QI candidates and Declined most of them. I see that you are a Commons Administrator and I wonder if there is any monitoring of the promotion process? - You seem to confuse COM:FP and COM:QI... Please read those pages carefully, and reconsider your votes on mattbuck's images on COM:QIC.
- For your information, I may have voted differently on two of your pictures currently proposed on the COM:QIC page, but your messages on my and Poco a poco's talk pages, and the retaliation votes on mattbuck's images are not really enticing me to hit the discuss button on your nominations.

- Revenge declines, if that is what those are, are never acceptable (and this does include reviewing only the one person's photos). Judge a photo by that photo's merits, not by your personal feelings about the author. I am aware that I tend to generate friction at QI - I tend to review the photos that no one else seems willing to review. That usually means the easy promotions are gone, and what's left are iffy ones and clear declines. Then, add on that I have quite high standards about what I expect from a photo, and yes, most of the images I review will end up being declined. This is not a commentary on the author - I rarely even look at the author, though I have over time learnt to recognise various people's styles - it is a commentary on the photo exclusively.
- Regarding the other points raised, you seem to be mistaking the goals of the various image promotion pages. COM:VI is for valuable images - ones which are rare, unusual, etc. I do not believe there is much worry about photographic quality at that project. COM:FP is concerned with value, photographic quality, and also a "wow factor" - the combination of the three can mean that some photos of low value or non-excellent quality get promoted because they fulfil the other criteria. COM:QI on the other hand is only about photographic quality - we don't care if the subject has been taken 1000000 times, so long as that particular photo is good quality. We also don't care about a "wow factor" - if your photo is boring, that's fine, so long as it's a good quality picture.
- QI has generally high standards, although what people will promote varies a bit. Some people are more concerned with certain technical aspects than others - I tend to care more about overexposure, and like high-contrast pictures, which some people may see as too dark. However, while we require excellence, we do not require perfection. I would generally say that composition is one of the less important metrics to measure a photo on - if there's a shopping trolley in the background, who cares, so long as it's not distracting from the subject. I find that rotation, colour, sharpness, lighting, distortion and chromatic aberrations are significantly more important.
- To give an example of a distracting background, consider File:USO-AB - 20131221 - David Roumieu.jpg. This was declined for other reasons, but I would have declined it because the guy in the background makes it look like the foreground guy has a massive tumour coming out of the back of his head. Compare with File:UK-2014-London-Blues and Royals 01.jpg. Here the background is not brilliant, but it's not overly distracting. It's good enough to not be disqualifying. If the other aspects of the photo are good, I would promote this.

- The Commons guidelines states "The purpose of quality image status is to recognize that at the moment of creation, a Commoner skillfully achieved a desirable level of quality." A desirable level of quality depends on the image being taken. Mattbuck's decline of my Blue Tit image was, I believe, a revenge decline and would ask other reviewers to please form their own opinion. The guidelines also refer to 'a technically compromised shot' and my declines of Mattbuck's images are because of technical failings. The images are in focus, but otherwise I do not see them as QI. I only Declined Mattbuck's images though dozens of other Commoners non-QI images are being nodded through. No one has answered my query about a group of regular posters of QI candidates quickly promoting each other's work. --15:31, 25 April 2014 (UTC).
- It is absurd to expect that we should devote our time to answer unsubstantiated allegations. You should not be able to set the agenda by throwing out unsubstantiated accusations, and expect others to spend hours defending themselves. Because you wrote a similar message to me with the same content, I will challenge you:
- Please go through my quality images (preferably the first 200 alphabetically) and tell me which ones do not meet the criteria for QI!
- Please go through my 200 latest reviews and tell me which of those who were incorrect!

I'd like to state a couple of things here:
- I wonder Matt's work being the last broom and cleaning up everthing nobody else did. He has been often though in this criticism but has always been fair. Regarding this images, while there are many dealing with trains, that's not important at QIC as long as they fulfill a quality standard and most of them do.
- Charles is right, I have a lot of QIs from the Allianz Arena, that's a fascinating subject to me, that I will probably keep photographing, so maybe next time I hit the 50 QIs, so what?
- Charles, be respectful and assume good faith! there is no deal here among us like I promote yours and you mine. I have no problem either to decline pictures of users who sometimes promote my pictures.
- The QIC process works and is lean, and there are tools to avoid that good pictures are not promoted and bad ones are promoted. With this tool in our hands I have no concerns about any absurd accusations, because for them to be valid, everybody here would have to be bribed, and that is ridiculous. ArildV - I'm not going to go through all your images, and most are very good, but ask others contributing to this thread to say what they think of File:Brunna gruvor 2012b.jpg and these you promoted: File:2014 Self-portrait 1.JPG, File:Invontes (ship, 2007) 002.JPG - too much sea, not enough sky, File:Raskelf MMB 02 West Moor Road.jpg, File:London MMB Y4 Tower Bridge.jpg the side of the tourist boat detracts from the image and obscures the north-side approach. - I am sorry you have got so cross Arild. I am very happy to withdraw any insinuation that you have given special treatment to a group of other users. This was wrong of me. I should have said that the process of promoting QI candidates appears to allow promotion of average images and devalues the notion of Quality Images as set out in the Commons QI Candidate guidelines.
You say you have absolutely no intention whatsoever to comment on individual photos, yet you demand I comment on 200 of yours. So here, reluctantly, is my opinion on the fist two rows of QI that show up when I click through from your User page - Media in category "Quality images by Arild Vågen". Naturally, these are my subjective opinions, not evidence. For evidence, you would need to seek the opinion of professional photographers.- File:1962 Scania-Vabis Capitol.jpg Too much foreground. Front of vehicle is backlit.
- File:20 Fenchurch Street Mars 2014.jpg Image not vertical. The very dark grey sky detracts from this image.
- File:2014 Landsort February 2014 07.jpg Sky is nothing like as blue as the other similar images, though otherwise the best composition.
- File:2014 Landsort February 2014 08.jpg Tower leans to the right.
- File:2014 Landsort February 2014 09.jpg Too much rock, not enough lighthouse (see other images).
- File:9207 May 2013.jpg Nice image: subject shows well against building.
- File:Abbe and Madicken outside Djurgården 2011.jpg The boats do not stand out from the background.
- File:Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin November 2013.jpg Again, isn't a QI of a building best taken on a sunny day when the sun is shining on the building, not when it is only shining on buildings in the background?

- Please excuse my boldness in reformatting your post above, I believe a numbered list is easier to read than a long list of files. Here are my thoughts on those same images:
- I'm not sure I'd have promoted this, but due to sharpness/detail issues rather than lighting issues.
- The image is vertical, but the grey tower on the right, the "Cheesegrater" as it's popularly known, is not vertical. The grey sky is unfortunate, and a bit more contrast would have been nicer, but this is not FP.
- I agree, the sky could be bluer, and if I'd reviewed I would have requested it be made bluer, but as is it's QI anyway.
- Hard to say really, there might be a slight clockwise tilt, but it's marginal, especially as the lighthouse isn't perfectly vertical anyway.
- I think I'd have cropped the bottom left off due to a bit of blur.
- Here I think a perspective/tilt correction is needed, and I think maybe more contrast.
- I rather agree on that one, and would further say the focus is on the background rather than the boats. I don't think I'd promote that one.
- The lighting is fine, in fact I'd say the background buildings are too well-lit. I think there's a bit of leaning out on the right, and maybe some CA.
- Brightness ok, but lacking a bit of detail I think. Sharpening might help.
- Not really the sort of thing I like to review. I think I'd stay neutral on this.
- I don't really like this one - there seems to be a bit of blur on the right, and the sky seems somewhat green.
- I think standing a few feet to the right would be better, to get that tree out of the direct line of the minaret, but QI IMO.
- The sales people are part of the image.
- Not QI for me - bad CA on the wire (should have been painted out anyway), feels a bit tilted, unsharp, low contrast.
- So, from our little comparison, you would decline 11/14, I would decline 3/14, and would ask for corrections on about 8. I should also state that while I didn't check the promotion dates of these images, I think the standard of QIs has gone up over the past few years. There are some of my photos which I look at now and think "that got QI?" To me, this is the a really good example of where I believe some Commoners are happy to promote holiday snapshots just because they have been taken with a new digital camera. Interestingly, so far no one has reviewed on my QI candidate of Kilimanjaro: a photo taken in 2005 and which cannot now be taken using latest photo equipment as the snow has melted for ever. - A photo is of what it's of. If it's of candy-floss sellers, it's of candy-floss sellers. They don't detract from the image - to my mind, that would have been a strange photo if they weren't there. As for your Kilamanjaro candidate, I have not seen it, but you do seem to be misunderstanding the concept of QI - we do not care about value. It doesn't matter that your photo cannot be taken again, if you want it promoted on those grounds take it to COM:VI.
- If you feel that the majority of QIs could not pass "Day 1 of a Beginners' Photo Class", then I think you are being hyperbolic and frankly insulting the people who contribute to QI. I grant you, we do get some nominations which are frankly awful, but those are far from the majority. Moreover, if you disagree with a promotion/decline, even if it's not your own nomination, you can change it to discuss! If you think a photo is not QI, say so! Maybe more people will agree with you! Secondly, you do not like my negative comments on lighting nor cluttered images: Again, the current QI candidate guidelines say 'Lighting and focus also contribute to the overall result; the subject should be sharp, uncluttered, and well-exposed'.
Thirdly, my negative comments on unskilled composition have been reversed, yet the current QI candidate guidelines say 'at the moment of creation, a Commoner skillfully achieved a desirable level of quality.' So 'value' lighting, an uncluttered image and skill should all be considered by those promoting QI candidates.
Finally, I have declined images which do not meet the following QI guidelines: 'Foreground and background objects should not be distracting. Objects in front of the subject shouldn't hide important elements and background elements shouldn't spoil the composition'; 'Centering the subject is often considered a negative practice... - Please excuse my boldness in reformatting your post above, I believe a numbered list is easier to read than a long list of files. Here are my thoughts on those same images:
- Charles
- I had every right to ask for proof. You had already forced me to spend days to defend myself against a false insinuation. A insinuation you completely unprovoked posted on my talk page and now admits was false.
- Your photo comments show a lack of understanding of Wikimedia Commons and the project's purpose and goals. You didn't even come across as a very knowledgeable photographer. Somewhat surprising, given your very harsh and arrogant words about my pictures (holiday snapshots that wouldn't pass Day 1 of a Beginners' Photo Class).
- Wikimedia Commons is not flickr. The goal is not to show off, the goal is not to find the single best image from the single best angle. We don't just want to have a single picture of a building (for example, the main facade in sunlight). We want pictures of all the details, pictures from different angles, from different seasons and so on. Your composition criticism of File:2014 Landsort February 2014 09.jpg and File:Adelswärdska huset september 2011a.jpg is thus irrelevant.
- (the lighthouse image is part of my ongoing documentation of Landsort Category:Images_by_Arild_Vågen-Landsort. To dismiss it as holiday snapshots is nonsense imo!)
- To criticize a single picture that focuses on the facade (Adelswärdska huset) for it does not put the building in its context is just absurd. It is not the image purpose, and there are other images that does put the building in its context! We need both, of course! And it has nothing to do with photographic quality.
- Furthermore, you seem to have some original ideas that are not supported by established photographic practice. For example, that building pictures must be taken in sunlight. As an example, you use an aerial photo (technically, taken from a high building). It is a kind of photos (aerial photographs of cities) where many photographers choose a cloudy day, to avoid the extreme contrasts between e.g. a shaded street and a sunny roof.
- And before you start lecturing photographers here and using arrogant and derogatory descriptions, please remember that most photographers here have a very big commitment to free knowledge and project. The important thing is to take a picture that can be used. We upload images, even though it was not perfect conditions (that does not mean that the photographer is ignorant, or the images can be dismissed as holiday snapshots!). And by the way, all 14 pictures are useful and many of them is used on Wikipedia.
- Let us return to the purpose and goals of Wikimedia Commons. High technical quality makes images more useful, and usually offers higher education value (examples of relevant aspects are sharpness, level of detail, and accurate colors). It is important that we make it easier to find good pictures, and QI is one way to do it. That an image does't have a completely optimal crop is less important for the image value and usefulness, that an image was taken on a cloudy day is irrelevant.
- You doesn't seems to understand that an image can be used in many ways either. File:Ahi Çelebi Camii Mars 2013 02.jpg is not just about a mosque. Its about the evening winter light in Istanbul, the salespeople who are eating and talking to each other after a long day, the mood after the tourists left the area for the day, the peaceful and quiet setting in the very center of a stressful and chaotic metropolis. A useful image in many ways.

As a Google Summer of Code Intern, I have been working on the Mass Migration tools project for Wikimedia. We are now ready with a minimal working product. The tool helps translators and translation administrators import the old translations into the Translate Extension.
An instance of the same has been set up on labs. You can find some useful instructions on the main page.
Please test the tool and report bugs/suggestions using the link provided on the main page itself. You can have a look at the tracking bug to check already reported bugs.

Je fais suite à la discussion ouverte sur le bistro au sujet de l'accord envoyé pour des images du jeu Little Big Adventure pendant les grandes vacances. Comme je le disais dans la discussion, je suis content de voir que l'email a été retrouvé. Suite à ta remarque sur la photo des membres de l'équipe, je disais que j'allais essayer de faire en sorte que la photographe d'origine envoie directement un accord pour la licence. En attendant, est-il possible que tu traites l'autorisation envoyée le 23 juillet par Didier Chanfray pour les images du jeu ? Je voudrais vraiment pouvoir les intégrer à l'article sous peu car je risque de ne plus avoir beaucoup de temps pour le faire d'ici peu.
