License of recordings from pianosociety.com

Hello, I'm not sure if you are the right person to contact because Raulbot may be used by others, so if you are not the uploader of the files please forward this message. It seems that the files you've uploaded aren't in the public domain. Your quote concerning the license ("Piano music of any composer is accepted as long as it is not copyright restricted.") has nothing to do with the copyright of each performance. http://www.pianosociety.com/index.php?id=164 says that the "copyright pertaining to the recordings on this site belong to respective pianists". The following text makes clear that these files aren't in the public domain. I'm afraid that these files have to be deleted. --Baikonur 14:15, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I looked for that license info, but couldn't find it. You're quite correct, they all need to go. Raul654 19:26, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)
All the copyvios are now deleted. Raul654 23:12, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Sufficient attribution of files from http://hebb.mit.edu/FreeMusic/

Hi Raul, because cc-by-sa requires attribution I wonder if it is sufficient to state the source of the file but not the creator. The page says "The artists who created this music worked hard, and while they don't expect payment in the form of money, they want recognition for their efforts. In other words, give credit where credit is due. If your use does not make these tags easily accessible, please give proper credit elsewhere in your product. It's just common sense. Please respect it.". Therefore I think MIT Concert Choir should be credited on the description page. --Baikonur 15:48, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I considered that. However, there are non-choir recordings in there (remember, I slurped the whole site, and not just the MIT music section). When I transcoded them, I took particular care to use a program which preserves the ID3 tags so the attribution info is still there. On the other hand, keeping track of who-recorded-what on the image page was just not feasable - I would have spent longer doing than everything else combined. Further, I don't think the statement he makes ("if your use... product") refers to us because, in fact, we *do* keep the tags fairly visible - anyone who listens to the music will see the tag. I think that he meant specifically for people who use it in some other form - playing it aloud, or anaylsis, or any of a million other uses where you are not seeing the software decoder. Raul654 16:01, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Hacking the script to spew out the OGG tags and their content in Wiki format shouldn't be too hard, although perhaps a separate bot to grovel through all the commons audio and ensure that the tags are there would be nice... (In fact, it might even be nice if the Wiki software displayed tag contents on audio description pages) --Andrew 03:54, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
With some more hacking (thanks to Avar and Dysprosia's help), the script now echo's ID3 tag info into the upload description. Raul654 06:30, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
This URL is now 404. Is there updated attribution information? --Brion VIBBER 07:20, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
I hand-updated all the image pages to include 'performed by' information gathered from the OGG ID tag. There were a small number of files (Six - Jsbach bwv996 01.ogg through Jsbach bwv996 06.ogg) that did not include this information to begin with and thus cannot be further attributed. Raul654 19:59, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Yay.

Category:Hebrew pronunciation, even there currently appears to be some cache problem or something of that sort - and only one file is displaying. Nadavspi 06:19, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Tadamichi Kuribayashi

Regarding Tadamichi Kuribayashi.jpg, I'm unable to give you official info about the source. I'm going to see if I can email the author of the website from where the image was downloaded. -- Get_It 16:00, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to email the contact thats on this website, and also try to find the image on NARA's webpage (NARA's search engine sucks, so this might take some time). -- Get_It 16:10, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ibiblio sports a picture that claims to be from the US Marine Corps, so I've gone ahead and uploaded that over the old image and replaced the talk page. Raul654 16:19, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
w00t!, but I didn't read your message, and I already have sent a email :S
Well, if it is public domain, we will have 2 images \o/ -- Get_It 16:30, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wired CD tracks

Links are broken on the songs from the Wired CD. Additionally, the songs are originally mp3:s, they've been converted from mp3->ogg? --Rdnk 18:13, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I removed the Wired CD tracks because they're CC-by-SA-noncommerical -- I just haven't gotten around to deleting them from the master list. Raul654 21:33, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Longwood Gardens

Thank you for all your excellent photos from Longwood Gardens! Perhaps you could put them in a wikimedia commons collection "Photos from Longwood Gardens", to which we could link from en:Longwood Gardens. --Zantastik 06:44, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

Well, right now, I've just uploaded the individual plant pics (e.g., w/ latin name, cropped and centered on the target plant). I have more encompassing shots (fountains, sundials, topairies, etc) that I was going to upload later and add just those to the article. I don't envision linking linking to all 180+ pictures from that article - that would be just excessive. On the other hand, I do have the full thumbaniled view in my picture gallery. Raul654 06:56, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
BTW, if you link the Latin name, it makes it easy to see if there is already a gallery for that species already. At some point I think we should consider making categories for images from particular botanical gardens, to aid in correlating our pics with their holdings. Stan Shebs 15:56, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
Also beware of overwriting, Image:Lobularia maritima1.jpg overwrote a picture of a completely different specimen, and we want both available. Stan Shebs 16:18, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

Music

If there's not a really good reason otherwise given, I'm going to delete all of the music files you uploaded on April 8-9. There's no differentiation between copyrighted works and things that are out of copyright; all are labeled as public domain which appears quite negligent. --Brion VIBBER 21:43, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

Misidentified plant from DC05 run

Image:Zingiber malaysianum.jpg is misidentified, has been placed on Plants misidentified. Looks like a philodendron to me. -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 21:09, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

It's entirely possible I made a mistake. Raul654 22:36, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi, when you copy images from Wikipedias, don't forget to add the name of the copyright owner plus date of first publication. Thuresson 05:50, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Image:EM-0004-03.mpg.ogg

Please add a description, a source and a license for this recording withing a week. Thuresson 21:03, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

It's an ogg theora I uploaded for Brian0918 (who was having trouble converting it from mpg). It's a public domain NASA video. I've gone ahead and added that information to hte image page. Raul654 15:30, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, I also added a description. Somebody should make a rock music video out of this :) Thuresson 15:42, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
For some reason, as soon as I read that, I imagined that video with the last 2 minutes of Stairway to Heaven playing :) Raul654 15:48, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Image:NYC meetup 5.jpg

Hi, can you verify that you are the photographer of this photo? Thuresson 19:54, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I did indeed take that one. Raul654 20:56, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
If you check the en image page, it's actually not *quite* GFDL -- my meetup pics are GFDL-if-the-people-in-the-picuture-agree-wikipedia-only-otherwise. I don't think it'd be a big issue getting SJ, Anthere, and Jimbo to agree (SJ is the one who uploaded it here and tagged it as GFDL, after all). Raul654 21:00, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Compiler

Hi Raul. I was just trying to get an image for pt:Compilador (compiler) which would be simple to understand. You are right, but I didn't read the en: article, so I couldn't understand why there was a flow between Lang1 and Target1, idem to 2. Actually, I was based on the spanish version, but credited yours since it was based on yours. However, it doesn't mention the frontend thing, which lead me to fail to understand why there was that double flow. BTW, perhaps you could recat your image to Category:Programming. Anyway, the purpose was to *not* enter at *that* detail, so a simple comparison to Image:Nt-bytecode.png could be possible side-by-side to explain en:Bytecode (actually, pt:Bytecode. This image will probably grow on complexity, however, and might include the front-end issue you just reported, which is a good idea to illustrate. I'll try to complete it when I have the time. Thanks for the reminder! -- Nuno Tavares PT 06:23, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

An image for deletion

Media of the day

How does one submit files to do? Zach (Smack Back) 05:31, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, it's actually quite simple. Like the selected anniversaries on the enlish Wikipedia, the media files are displayed on an infinitely repeating loop. The data is pulled from the two lists shown at Commons:Media of the day - one list has the file names and the other list has file descriptions. To change what file is shown on a partiuclar day, simply edit both lists accordingly. I populated the lists, but I don't expect them to be immutable. Some things (especially Handel's Messiah) are overrepresented (for lack of alternatives) and if there are other files I didn't know about, I'd like to see them put into the rotation. Raul654 05:59, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Raul, if we want to use the "media of the day" in the main pages of other languages (e.g. german) do we have to add descriptions? (like Template:Motd-de/01-1 instead of Template:Motd-en/01-1 ) And will they automatically change to the other description page? btw: it´s a nice feature :) bye --MilesTeg 01:42, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

With some help from Southpark on IRC and Sam916, MOTD is now on the german front page. I tweaked my script I used to generate Commons:Media of the day to include a german descriptions column. Raul654 02:52, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

White Pelican

Hi. I noticed that your impressive image at Image:Pelecanidae_onocrotalu.jpg is misnamed. It should be Pelecanus onocratalus. —JerryFriedman

Don't blame me - blame the good folks at Disney's animal kingdom who misprinted the sign ;) Raul654 00:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
